Treasure Planet Sells 1 Million DVD&VHS! Yay!

Animated Movies reports that the home video debut of the Disney cartoon Treasure Planet, a high-profile flop at the box office last year, got off to a fairly good start Tuesday on VHS and DVD, selling more than 1 million combined units its first day in release according to The Hollywood Reporter. One major retailer who asked not to be identified said that he believes Treasure Planet is likely to exceed its nearly $40 million domestic box office gross within the first week of release. However, if Day 1 estimated sales of Treasure topping 1 million combined units is accurate, that goal has already been achieved, he said. Despite the disappointing theatrical run of Treasure Planet, which cost a reported $140 million to make, such family fare has been the growth engine for DVD sales for the past two years. In addition, the VHS versions have always outperformed theatrical releases over time. Rental information was not yet available for Treasure, but a random check of national and region rental chain stores said that it was renting well and selling better, boosted by varying marketing incentives led by those retailers.

Well, well well, maybe the new fart joke advertising campign is actulally working. I don't like them going with that angle, but if it works to get this movie the arttention it deserves, more power to them.

Still have to check this movie out . . .

What do you mean 'fart joke'? I haven't seen any adds with that in it.

I had not seen Treasure Planet in theaters, but I had a birthday this week and received it as a gift. I watched and loved it, and am currently exploring the features. I think it deserves very much to be considered an animated classic, and I'm very glad that Disney seems to be back on its toes again. As a gift I also received Walt Disney Treasures: Behind The Scenes At The Walt Disney Studio, which completes my Treasures collection :D !!!

There is a very misleading trailer on TV right now that focuses mainly on fart noises. It really misrepresents the movie, it shouldn't have bad commercials like that.

What was Disney complaining about? They knew they would make their money back anyway. They made a big deal out of nothing when they started overreacting about the failure. In fact, I think their reaction discouraged some people from seeing it.

I wish this had a 2 disc edition :-(
Wonder if it'll get the Blu-ray treatment (somehow I doubt it)

The edition we got was pretty packed with bonus features (and looked and sounded amazing, too), so I see nothing to be sad about. I think all of the DACs will get the Blu-ray treatment eventually, so no need to fret about that either. Just be patient.

Agreed. This year, we're getting titles like Aristocats and Rescuers/Rescuers Down Under on Blu-Ray, some of the most underrated Disney classics in the canon. I'd be surprised if movies like Treasure Planet didn't follow suit in the next few years.

True. Don't get me wrong, I loved the features we got, I just feel there may have been even more that we weren't shown.

I didn't know that about some of the other WDAS films being released on Blu-Ray, so that has given me some hope :-D

Thanks guys!
