Some of us were wondering why it was replaced with The Cat Returns. Well, Disney admitted that the transfer turned out terribly and they did not want to release a substandard product. Look for Totoro with wave three led by Howl's Moving Castle.
I sure wish that was Disney's attitude when they release Pocohotas and A Goofy Movie. Refreshing.

You probably own the Fox copy, which I restrain myself from watching. Everyone says it has a bad transfer.

Mehe,
Fox put out a Region 1 disc. There are also Region 2 and 3 Discs from Disney and IVL respectively.

My Neighbor Totoro is scheduled for Studio Ghibli wave 3 with Only Yesterday & Pom Poko. One of those 3 titles could be replaced with Whispers of the Heart though.

Hensiki,
Whispers of the Heart was the TV movie Disney acquired the rights to after the original distribution deal was signed right?

No, Whisper of the Heart is the movie with the John Denver song & the Baron cat that is in the movie The Cat Returns. I Can Hear the Sea is the TV movie.

And that would explain why it was in my Wal-Mart's dump bin!

Wave 3 - allright. So there are 15 movies so far including the TV movie and Wolf's Castle and Ghible lost the rights to one making 14. So I gues we have 5 waves to look for assuming Ghibli makes another movie in the next couple of years.

According to Buena Vista's VP of brand marketing....
MacPherson told Video Store Magazine three more Studio Ghibli titles will be released together later in 2005. Buena Vista didn’t want to release too many Miyazaki titles at once because “we wanted to wait until the market was a bit more ready,” MacPherson said.
The highly acclaimed My Neighbor Totoro, Only Yesterday, and Pom Poko will be the other three Studio Ghibli titles released together in 2005, though one may be substituted with Howl’s Moving Castle or Whisper of the Heart.
MacPherson said the next wave of titles will get the same 2-DVD, top voice talent treatment. “That’s our intention. It’s all part of the same strategy,” she said.

To those of you who have noticed TOTORO in the bargain DVD bins, I would definitely suggest that you wait for the Disney release. I'm a fan of these classics as well, and I have to say that the Fox release of Totoro has some of the worst, most annoying dubbing work I have ever encountered. (And it is a very poor transfer.)

I think the Carl Macek English dub on the Fox DVD is perfect. Especially when one looks at the time it was made. I think it is one of the best dubs ever made for any anime. I don't know why Disney redubbed it.

Nice to hear about wave three!
The three I would like to see for wave three are 'Howl's Moving Castle', 'My Neighbour Totoro' and 'Whisper of the Heart' but any others would be great although those three are the ones I'm most anticipating.

I thought there were only 13 titles...
Nausicaä of the Valley of Wind
Castle in the Sky
My Neighbour Totoro
Kiki's Delivery Service
Porco Rosso
Princess Mononoke
Spirited Away
Howl's Moving Castle
Only Yesterday
Pom Poko
My Neighbours the Yamadas
Whisper of the Heart
The Cat Returns

We have the Fox version Totoro, we thought is was well done and the price is a good bargain too, for $7 bucks you can't go wrong. We are also looking forward to getting the Disney version.

Those were the 13 in the original deal. I Can See the Sea was subsequently added. It was a made for TV movie but was made by their film animators so I would imagine it is of high quality. So, it is fourteen at the moment plus at the rate Ghibli is going I am sure there will be a fifteenth. Ghibli made a 15th movie(their 4th chronologically) called Grave(or sometimes Tombstone) of the Fireflies which is supposed to be excellent and there is a two disc set in the states available from Central Park Media. Ghibli lost the rights to this one somehow so it is not part of the D-T deal.
By the way does anyone have a copy of the Central Park Media Grave of the Fireflies? If so how are the dub and the transfer. Given the extras they must have put some effort into it. I can remember reading on another board/or possibly this one that the single disc effort was not that good but the 2 disc one that came out later was quite good.
