Does anyone know if the baby raccoon that disappears after the forest fire sequence has been edited back in for the Platinum Editon of Bambi? Or is this not even possible to do? No matter what, I'm sure we all can't wait for next Tuesday!!!

I have wondered the same thing! I will be very upset if they did! I would consider that as defacing art! which i cannot stand!

It's the principle of the thing for me, really. I don't like them doing anything besides just restoring the prints but I guess that's too much to ask for. That simple request is just too hard for them to comply with. v.v

However, you have to remember that it is the director that gets the final say in things, how he wants his movie to be shown. While this director is no longer with us (possibly, I'm not sure), perhaps he expressed extreme dissatisfaction with the fact that the Racoon just disappears. We don't know. Thus this could be the way it was meant to be seen, which is always good in my books.

Also, this could be the original print, and all of the previous releases have had a few frames of animation missing, can we ever be sure?

You know, the same thing happens to Bambi's mother earlier in the film.

But don't jump to any conclusions, as this could be the one time it did it for other reasons. This is not a matter of censorship like the cigarettes or missing sections.

I think that if Walt was still alive and had the opportunity to fix things in his films that were technical errors, he wouldn't have a problem with it. When the raccoon scene was originally made, budget restrictions prevented them from fixing it in time for the film's release. It's not changing the context of the scene, so I personally don't mind.

i liked that they didnt fix the racoon its a fun blooper to spot and tell your friends about

Just to clarify the information ... the baby raccoon didn't disappear ... it "beamed over" (beating Star Trek by over 20 years!!!) from the mother to the father due to the cel art being placed one peg over too far in front of the background.

In several reference works, it has been stated that Walt Disney wanted to fix the error, but they just didn't have the money to reshoot the scene.

I personally have no trouble with the DVD having the fixed scene but I will keep my Bambi VHS video for that "goof" scene. Comparing the two scenes together, the "goof" is fun and the fixed scene seems "blah" in comparison.

I have not had time to check out the extras on the Bambi DVD, but it would have been nice if they had an extra on fixing that scene with a comparison on DVD of "before" and "after".

By the way, I have the VHS of the last time Bambi was on the market-I think snce 1995 or 94--and I checked my DVD ad the VHS an thres not other changes than the rackoon and the Bambis mother pop-up.

I tend to take the "purist stance" myself, but I respect the decision made here - after all, what they did was correct an obvious mistake. That's not the same thing as changing the crocs in Lion King.

Seems pretty stupid, doesn't it?

Someone probably figured that those stylized "art" crocodiles needed to look more realistic. Still no good reason, though.

I believe that the original crocodiles were deemed too scary, so they changed them to make them seem more family friendly.

The producers themselves changed the crocodiles. They said they weren't happy with their original designs.

yes that does suck. Smoking though... Cruella De Vil still smokes it up all through out 101 Dalamtians though. I dont think they could edit that out since shes practically holding that stick the whole time...

Disney don't mind when villains smoke. Its only when the "heroes" smoke that they get concerned. All to do with setting a bad example etc.

Recently, there's been a big push in the UK to make is so James Bond doesn't smoke in the films (he still lights up a cigar every now and then). All because the campaigners think that children are likely to copy their hero. Well, I say, they should look at his one night stands, shooting and fighting too. In fact, in the new James Bond film, Casino Royale, let's just have him sitting at home reading a book. Not only will he not set any bad examples, but he'll encourage children to read. Sorted. Respect due.
