The one on the left is the Region 1 cover. Perhaps the cover on the right is for the Region 2 disc?

I have the 2-disc SE R1 and it is the first one with the title in the center.

The first cover is the official Region 1 Cover Art, but the second cover was used as Promotional Art. It might be another region's artwork. Personally I think in the second cover Aurora actually looks like Aurora! In the scene where they kiss she does not have a pink dress!

***I love the second one and I wish they used that (MORE MALEFICENT), but **sigh** we got the first

The first cover is the final R1 cover. The second one is the German one, and was the preliminary cover art for R1 before they went with the first cover.

Yup, the cover in the right is the one used in many European countries, but it looks much boring because the name is written in a boring font. It's a nice cover, but it's sad that they didn't make it a 2-disc release.

(UK cover for Sleeping Beauty 2-Disc Collector's Edition is gorgeous).

oh ok thanks guys so the second cover art isn't a 2 disc special edition?

The second cover art doesn't exist here at all in the States. The first cover is what you should be looking for when shopping for the DVD.

Who are those people on that cover art? Is the prince about to kiss Maleficent in a pink dress? God bless my uk collector's edition cover. Usually I do't care much for cover art but Sleeping Beauty is the exception to the rule. SO hideous.

 in this case, the REGION 2 cover (or second one with Aurora and Phillip kissing) is MUCH Better than Region 1.

My favorite cover artwork is the one they used for the Japanese laserdisc:<p><img border="0" src="http://www.geocities.com/disney_laserdi ... a-1381.jpg" width="688" height="339"></p>

Not much for the Japanese laserdisc art myself. Prince Philip doesn't look right. To much glow. Maleficent looks too pink. And the back reveals the thorn forest, but the castle and all around it is bright, lush, and green. Nothing like the movie during the thorn forest scene.

I'm gonna tell you some stuff I noticed...

The Japanese LD cover has the same Aurora and Philip as in Disc 1 of the US Special Edition set.

Second, the cover art of the US release is so WRONG!!!! She had the BLUE dress when she was going to be kissed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I also like the kissing image on the non-US cover much more; Aurora is much prettier and has more accurate hair.

I still consider Sleeping Beauty to be the worst of Disney's SE covers. Aurora looks like Cher, her hair looks like it's made of yarn, her dress color is wrong, the rose almost looks like it's coming out her nipple, Prince Phillip is just staring at her blankly while resembling Jay Leno, and the nipple rose is about to brush against his chin. I agree with Eric that if they simply cut and pasted the Aurora/Phillip clipart from the Euro cover onto the top half of ours, the cover would work a lot better. Here's my crude mock-up of it:

To me the worst Disney 2-Disc set cover is Aladdin ! We recognize neither of the characters, excpet Genie. And it's even worst in the Region 1 set.
Because, comparing this and my french DVD, I noticed that on the french cover there was 1) smaller characters, so you notice less the "shortcommings", 2) differrent, less agressive red and blue colors.

About Sleeping Beauty in region 1, the cover (drawings, design, colors) looks really "primary". I bought it for the contents (more than other releases outisde the US) but I also bought the gorgeous French digipack, which is definitely THE best in terms of cover and packaging quality.

Here's what 2099net had posted about it in the internationl section :

OMG! that whole package is amazingly awesome! i wish the US would've gotten that! I noticed that i also like the French Pocahontas SE cover alot more than the US. It seems to me that the European covers are a lot more sophisticated than the Region 1 covers. Maybe i should move out there, lol.

Yup, thats what I'm doing. Hopefully in Italy the covers will be like the french ones.

France had, indeed, more tastelike Disney DVD covers, but not anymore. Now, etiher, it's the same as other European countires, etiher the same as the region 1's.
And so, now, some region 1 covers are better in region 1. I think of Bambi which is absolutely awful in Europe ! Too much characters comming outta nowhere with floating heads ! Which is something that us Europeans reproached to Americians when we had tasteful covers :) but now it's our turn lol

And about the recent French rerelease Pocahontas singerguy04, you liked the slipcover design, but, inside it, the DVD case is exaclty the same as the US set to be released in April.

About the difference of cover betwen US / Frane and Europe more generally, I was reading in a magazine a couple years ago (when we still had our peculiar great covers ;-) that the min difference betwen them is that the US needed to have all the characters on the cover without caring what it really looked like. It was just someting that would attract more the kids with all the colors, characters and stuff...
Whereas in France, we had 2 different kinds of covers : for the platinums edition titles or even the other 2-dsic set release, we had a single disc version with "childish" cover featuring a lort of characters and redish colors; and we had the Collector's Edition 2-disc which was a little more expensive but aimed at adult Disney fans with a "smooth" cover, with more taste design and drawings. As examples of Slepping Beauty and also Beauty and the Beast xwhich is absolutelu stunning!

Oh yeah, stunnig BATB collector's cover :)

And inside, the french set was the same as the UK's (thx 209net) but I prefer the french syle for the slipcover (above) :

Truth be known, European companies are more sophistcated and respectful of what they put there. They see more then a kids movie, they see art. American ideals are pretty cheap and cheaply made because of it. Most Americans don't apprieciate good art. So long as it works and it's cheap, they are happy.

Case in point: The Last Unicorn

The USA cover: Image
This version also had NO special features whatsoever. Not even a trailer.

The UK cover: Image I have the German version with the same cover. I'm not sure if the UK version included what was in the German one. The German one had trailers, cast bios, a featurette, and great menus. Also a sheet of Last Unicorn stickers were included.

Americans just don't apprieciate the art. Most don't care. When I told one of my friends how disappointed I was in the TLU cover, she couldn't understand why. She thought it looked fine. Goes to show you, all in the eye of the beholder.

I don't think it's fair to generalise every American.. I think it all has to do with preferences.. Perhaps, just maybe, could it be that most of the American public enjoys seeing more character and less fancy art?
