I am wondering... about Disney worldwide release dates

Why is it that I noticed here in this forum that the U.K. and other places get their Disney releases before we do here in North America. That I find that strange because Disney is an American company now wouldn't it be releasing everything in North America first? How is that?

Do I spot a hint of jealousy? :P

Sometimes we in the UK get a DVD first, sometimes (most of the time) the US gets it first. Also sometimes other countries like Germany, Australia and France had had releases before any other countries. It depends on what other films are out and about at the time, because all countries have different release schedules for theatrical films and DVD releases they appear in different places at different times!

Know what I mean?

For example The Us is getting Bambi at the start of March, now here in the UK we are getting Mary Poppins and Pocahontas at the start of March, so it wouldn't really make much sense for it to be released then because there would be three disney special editions all out in stores all at once, which means not as many are going to be sold, because people aren't going to be able to afford 3 all in one go.

It is arguable that Bambi could then have been released towards the end of March, to give a couple of weeks for Pocahontas and Mary Poppins to sell. However the problem there would be that "The Incredibles" Is being released at the end of March and Disney would not want it's 2 potential biggest sellers of the year competing with each other at the same time!

Bambi could have been moved to April, but then it would be up against the special editions of Alice in Wonderland and Dumbo. In May it would be up against the special edition of Tarzan and if it was then moved to June it would be really close to Cinderella in the Autumn, and Disney probably wants to keep it's two platinum editions at opposite ends of the year.

Now in the US you have already had Mary Poppins, Alice in Wonderland and Dumbo, and Pocahontas is coming later in the year, so BVHE US can afford to put Bambi back a month, because you have different releases to us. The same thing applies to other countries too, such as Australia and France which got the Mary Poppins, Lilo and Stitch and Pocahontas 2 disc special editions last November!

It's nothing personal against the US, it's just simple strategy, juggling the releases so they don't coincide with each other!

Oh and one more thing...

Ha, Ha! we got Bambi before the US/Canada!

:P Only Joking!

Plus, often when you get things later, you get more content. When we get things later (or earlier) we get stuff taken off :(

Actually, purplebluelove99 is from Canada.

I think what Ichabod said pretty much sums it up. And frankly, I think it's only fair that we get one or two releases earlier than the USA considering how long it's taken for Alice to come out in a special edition that was so special, that BVHE UK decided to knock off chunks of bonus footage in order to not make the Brits feel overwhelmed by it's specialness.

Oh well, at least I have a Region 1 copy. :D

Thank you Ichabod for your answer. I already knew about other countries having different release dates than North America, I just wanted to know why Disney does that. I guess you're right 3 at a time is too much to consume all at once. Our dollar isn't worth much over here so when you shell out $25.00 a pop for each dvd that could get expensive. I usually try and buy them when they first come out. So I don't have to shell out $30.00 plus dollars when they go into the vault. Thanks again. Cheers.

Wow! $30? You lucky Canadian you! I had to shell out $46 for my copy of Sleeping Beauty when it went into the vault. Of course, I had to buy it from Music World, and if you've ever been into a Canadian Music World you know that they are vastly overpriced. However, by the time I got around to finding it it was the only copy left in the entire city of Ottawa!
