...that deserved better recognition than they got.

Altough, one can actually blame Disney for that.

I remember seeing the teasers for Treasure Planet on the Cartoon Network. All they showed where B.E.N. and Morph as I remember. And also the pirate with the "fart" noises.

In fact I remember avoiding it everytime I went to Blockbuster. The only reason I rented it was because there was nothing else.


In the case of Brother Bear, the trailer looked cool and all but then... the moose in the end; which let people (or at least me) to believe: "another comedy" or "more of the same"


When in reality we know these two movies contain adult or serious situations.


Treasure Planet is my favorite of these two. And could actually put it in my top of Disney classics. Basically because I can relate directly to Jim's story. Also because it is extremely well animated. And a fun movie by itself.

Brother Bear in the other hand really surprised me. I thought it was just going to be mediocre at best and then I discovered the incredible movie it was.

I think these two movies in particular deserved much more that what they got.

That didn't happen in the 90's.

I agree - both are under-rated, particularly Treasure Planet, which is almost a masterpeice. Their respective box-office grosses can be more attributed to the lack of interest in traditional animation amoung the public lately, rather than Disney's promotion of them. Sure, a few of the ads emphasised the humor of the films too much, the fart thing being the worst example, but they tend to do that on channels with kid-aimed programming. Overall, from what I saw, they did a great job of capturing the feel of both movies in the ads, and had a reletively wide promo campaign too.

Secondly, to answer your question. Dear old Mikey wanted traditional animation cut loose, and by proving failures he could claim that the public shows no interest in traditional animation. (yet suprisingly all the cheapquels are among Disney's best sellers ).

The way I see it, it's not the public's loss of interest, it's more along the lines of Disney disappointing (mostly) when it comes to new releases. The public doesn't trust Disney in good film making as much anymore. I truely believe that not even CGI will save the situation. Just my humble opinion...

I haven't seen TP, but i bought Brother Bear cus Joe Carioca asked me what I'd thought of the color banding issue, and I loved it! It's not perfect but it's kind of a Bambi/forest modern take and it's in Cinemascope 2.40 too!
(Those European brothers that have only seen the pan/scan version, run get the widescreen version, where one UK friend of mine said seeing the widescreen version was like the difference between Dorothy's sepia Kansas and Technicolor Oz!) Adult themes, gorgeous cinematography, I even liked the obnoxiously cute little bear. Wish I had a brother like that

Sad to say that I've only seen Treasure Planet of those two movies. And although I don't think that the movie deserved to bomb, TP has to get the title of worst Disney movie ever. Aside from the nice animation, I found it to be a total drag.

I want to see Brother Bear, but haven't yet. Personally, I have a feeling that it's going to be my favourite Disney movie since Mulan. I missed it in cinemas and was going to rent the DVD, until I discovered that BVHE UK thought that it would be best to present the movie in "family friendly widescreen". I will get the French set when I go over to the land of wine and cheese this summer, however (which was actually released in a superior version to the US DVD).

BVHE UK's insane desicions annoy me. I suppose they won't release The Little Mermaid and The Jungle Book on DVD as too many people won't rebuy them as they've got them on video.

This is precisely the problem! Disney started down a slipery slope after Emperor's New Groove of releases that either a) didn't sound interesting at all or b) looked much like previous efforts. And it is this that led to the downfall of traditional animation. Sometimes I think they did all that they could to bring it down.

However, in relation to the subject of the post. I must disagree with the majority opinion here (at least, in one respect). I felt that Treasure Planet was a mess of a movie, and in actuality they had almost no way of gaining back their losses on that one (It was the most expensive traditionally animated movie made (because of some of the CGI elements). The problem I found with the movie was just about everything. The main character wasn't interesting, and I actually didn't care what happened to him, or anybody else in the movie to be precise. And this is coming from a guy who loves the story, and other variations on it (Like Muppet Treasure Island).

In regards to Brother Bear, I haven't seen it yet but I plan to give it a look this month, along with Pocohontas, Hunchback of Notre Dame, Home On The Range, The Black Cauldron, The Rescuers, And The Rescuers Down Under. I have seen some of these releases before, but can't remember them because it's been so long since I last saw them. In regards to the newer releases, Pocohontas, Hunchback, and Home On The Range, I haven't seen them period yet and I want to before making any judgement on them. It's going to be a Disney reading week for me! (For those who don't know, Reading week is the University version of March break, only it's in February)

I consider brother bear a success. while I was at the disney animation (animator graveyard) tour at Disney/mgm, brother bear got a larger response that mulan and lilo & stitch.

Well, I really liked him. And besides I can relate directly to the story. Almost the same thing happened to me.

I tought the same thing... yet I wonder what could they say about Dinosaur? In my opinion a very shallow movie and they stole the climax directly from TLK.... THAT IS REALLY WRONG!

hold on there, Lion King is actually one big giant Anime/Hamlet rip off on its own.

As for Brother Bear and Treasure Planet. Well, Brother bear was a little bit of a mess in my opinion. They should have called it "Walt Disney Feature animation: The Greatest Hits collection". In other words, nothing we hadn't seen before. And Treasure Planet suffered from severe creative schizofrenia. I did not enjoy that movie much. "worst Disney film" is kind of a mean title and I wouldn't use the word "worst" for any WDFA film. But if I were to give a movie that title, I'd say Black Cauldron. that one is despite being very ambitious so forgettable

When I first watched Treasure Planet and Brother Bear, I felt the plots weren't up to par with the previous films. In my opinion, I wouldn't consider them "classics" such as Bambi, The Sword in the Stone, Aladdin, etc. But Brother and Bear and Treasure Planet are enjoyable to watch.

The music pieces in BB were wonderfully written. It also created my two favorite sidekicks: Rutt and Tuke! They actually saved the movie for me. If it wasn't for the two moose... I probably wouldn't have liked the film <i>at all</i>.

As for Tresure Planet, the graphics blew my mind away. I felt it was another wonderfully animated film and it was an interesting take on a classic story.

Everybody has their own opinions, and I'm really glad you enjoyed the movie. Relation to a character is very important to enjoying a movie, and this is why I think I couldn't really get into Treasure Planet. One thing I did like about it though was that it was very nice to look at.

That's why I said I liked it.

I really enjoyed both movies a great deal especially Brother Bear. It was just my kinda movie. I admit it wasn't perfect but along with Mulan those are my two favourite movies since The Lion King. Others are great but these two edge the others out for me.

Treasure Planet was great too although I didn't rush out and buy it like I did Brother Bear. In fact I haven't bought it yet but I plan on it.

Treause planet is something im not interested in watching at the minute, i wasnt very impressed with Atlantis and for some reason TP just reminds me of it..........

But im going to buy Brother Bear on thursday so once and for all i will finally know what its like!

It's nothing like it. Believe me. It gives that impression but it is not.

Both Treasure Planet and Brother Bear are far better then Home on the Range, which was one of the worst and lame animated films by Disney.

I just want to give my support for these two movies too. I love both Treasure Planet and Brother Bear and agree that they are underrated. I'm sorry to see that some of you didn't like these films but I'm glad to see that so many of you did.

I love them both! both are great movies!

My Brother Bear came yesterday (R2) and wow such a good movie!!! I wish id of brought it sooner.....it had a really nice storyline, characters were good and i loved the animation!
When i brought Home On The Range, i enjoyed it but its such a let down compared to this film!

Now im wondering wether to buy Treausure Planet.....what u think?
