Hello all! Questions Concerning Moratorium
Posted: Sun Jan 30, 2005 4:48 pm

Hello all! I've been observing this board for a while now, but have finally decided to join in an attempt to get an answer to a question that has bugged me for a while.
I was reading in the FAQ section that since Disney modified the Platinum release schedule, they also modified the moratorium time from 10 years to 5. Now does this mean that the "Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs" Platinum Edition will be re-released next year, or 2007? I really want to know, because I missed its initial release due to major budget constraints.
On a second note, is anyone else here kind of sick of the moratorium system?
Beware! Rant!
This is just a quick rant, and it came up because I recently purchased the "Sleeping Beauty": Special Edition 2 disc edition for $35.99 (for those who don't know, $35.99 is incredibly high for a double DVD in Canada). Because the disc was placed on moratorium a year ago, I had to pay through the nose to get it, and was only able to find it at this one store (I refuse to shop online because of the problems I've had in the past). Basically Disney is really taking a lot of money out of our (the fans) pockets when they do this, and it hurts those like myself (Who are paying their way through something (I'm paying for University, but others could be paying off large debts or something similar)). I'm a HUGE Disney fan, and support them almost whole-heartedly, however this is the one area where I don't. I've missed out on 3 waves of Treasures (I'm getting desperate trying to find a copy of Mickey Mouse in Black And White vol.1, Mickey Mouse In Living Colour vol. 1, and The Complete Goofy). I would've bought them when I saw them, but I didn't have the funds at the time and thus now they cost $150! Anyways, I think these cartoons, which hold both historical and personal (I loved these cartoons as a kid and would love to show them to my kids, when I have them) significance should be available for a much longer run than 110,000-250,000 units.
Anyways, I just needed to get that out, and you guys seem to be an understanding bunch, and I'm sure some of you share my frustration with this system.
Hopefully someone here can answer my question, and everyone is invited to rip apart my rant
Hope to hear from everyone!

First, welcome to the forum
Jayden.
I haven't bought Snow White because it didn't come with a slip cover.

So i'm hoping if Disney does plan to release it again after its "10 year moratorium", they'll add a slipcover.
And $35.99 was a steep price for Sleeping Beauty!

Usually EBAY has some trustworthy sellers for Disney OOP dvds, but I still understand why you wouldn't want to shop online..

Sometimes, I feel Disney
is taking sooo much out of our pockets, but they're the best (well, somtimes. But if you'd compare them to other companies out there..ahem*Dreamworks*, Disney is by far... better.

) I've loved DIsney as a kid and still doo!
You can always check the "
trade" section of the UD Forum, or call Disney is they still have those treasures. Never hurts to try; good luck

Thank you so much for your response and the advice.
You are absolutely right, Disney is the best, despite this policy.
Have you used the trade section before? I'm curious about how it works.
Also, what # should I call at Disney to inquire as to the availability of the Treasures?
Again, thanks for the help!!!

Welcome to the forum! I'm glad you decided to register. You're clearly passionate and well-versed and we can never have enough people like that in our ranks!
<i>Snow White</i> is supposed to be resurfacing in the fall of 2008 now, according to the Disney UK DVD website. This doesn't really make much sense, if they're going to be working in the 4 added titles (<i>Fantasia</i>, <i>Peter Pan</i>, <i>Sleeping Beauty</i> and the desperately in need of a re-release <i>Pinocchio</i>). By the fall of 2007, the initial ten will all be out on DVD in "Platinum Edition" form. From there, one would assume they'd hit those other 4 titles they proclaimed part of the line a couple of years ago before starting all over again (presumably on DVD and the next generation format).
But there was once a time when they were going to stick to just 1 Platinum a year. This too could change. But the earliest we should be seeing <i>Snow White</i> again is 2008.
I wouldn't write off online ordering altogether. You need to be quite wary of second-hand places like eBay and Amazon's Marketplace when it comes to out-of-print DVDs, but buying DVDs new from Amazon or Best Buy online is generally painless and when it's not, they're quick to correct any problem.
Hope to see you as a regular part of the forum community!

Hi Jayden! welcome to the forum
I feel your pain. Personally i don't like the moratoriums neither but I guess it's Disney's game... err I mean bussiness descision to force us to buy things before we're ready, make us scramble for them when they are about to go out of print (as The Lion King is about to do in the next few hours

) and pull our hairs and wallets till we find them after they're gone
At least things are easier to find in this internet age.
But it really irks when you go to a store and they tell you: "Sorry it's on moratorioum. sorry that is also unavailable. Nope that too." etc etc
I took one year to get the best price on the first 2 wave treasures. I did that by buying the Cotsco Treasure Chest set new, which at $129 total for the 7 discs was cheaper than the 7 tin editions when they were new, and the $150 price they sometimes ask for ONE of the oop treasures now.
If you can stand to have those three tinless (I do, I got like 1/3 of the 14 tinless, the content is what's more important to me

) maybe seeking out that "Cotsco" Treasure Chest may be more cost effective than tracking the 3 single ones you want..
anyway recently we had this thread about that chest and maybe where to find it, in case you're interested.

Thanks for the welcome and the information! I love your site, and check it as often as possible
Hopefully,
Snow White will resurface sooner rather than later.
Now, I just have to be patient and wait for all the rest of my favorite movies to come out!

No, I haven't used the Trade section (mainly because I use EBAY [really picky of my sellers though!]...But I do like to check up on what people post on it!) If anything... next to EBAY, and AMazon Marketplace, I'd most definitely purchase from the people here. (there are rules and policies on the trade forum, I believe)

The only good thing that I see about this is that it makes you feel the proud owner of the already OOP movies; in my case Peter Pan, Tarzan, Sleeping Beauty, Beauty and the Beast,, Toy Story 1 & 2 and now TLK

.
On the other hand, in the case of the Platinum I can't see why people should be left out of these titles since they're out for quite some time, and being as popular as they are people are already expecting them and anyone can buy them in that period of time.
Other thing is regular movies like Tarzan or Peter Pan and Sleeping Beauty (this ones because they decided must be Platinum now.... in exchange they still sell the awful Pocahontas Gold Collection) that they just take them out without previous notice.
However, in my opinion, movies are regular items and are meant to be sell always and not for a limited time; unless we're talking about already established limited editions.
PS
Oh yeah, Welcome to the forum!

I don't like the moratorium but that's just because I'm missing titles because of lack of money at the time they were released as well.
Sadly I was holind the last copy of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs available in my city a while after it went back into the vaults but I couldn't get it. My friends did so that's better than nothing.
I'm going to get the original even if it costs me a lot.

I can't wait until 2008! .....especially since it's one of my favourites.

I'd like to see something done with Snow White's 75th Anniversary, a big huge DVD bash and all but man 2012 is a long ways ahead of 2008.

Thank you all for the welcomes! It's great to know that somewhere there is a community of Disney-nuts like myself.
Myself and My Girlfriend love revisiting those classic Disney movies over and over. And unlike other movies, they don't get old. Anyways, again thanks for the welcomes.
Special thanks goes to RJKD3 for providing the phone number I require. I look forward to posting here often!

No problem!

You'll find yourself on this site a lot and posting quite often!
It's sooo addicting!

By the way, since you're new to the forum, you should also post on this thread:

Is it really 2012 for the 75th Anniversary?!
Because if it is, I'll just hold off until that year to buy Snow White!
just kidding
But I can't wait to see what Disney will do for Snow White's 75th...aside from raise the DVD price.

This is very easy my beloved friends: moratorium=capitalism. It's that simple. No problem with that !!!

Wait one second!! If Disney says that
Snow White is coming out on DVD before the release of
Sleeping Beauty, Pinocchio, Peter Pan, and
Fantasia, does that mean that they may change the platinum line again. They say 2 platinum’s a year, but is there a chance they will change that so that everything including
Sleeping Beauty, Pinocchio, Peter Pan, and
Fantasia will be released by 2008? Is there even a chance of more than 2 platinum’s being released a year?

I wouldn't hold my breath on more than 2 platinums a year. Disney has all those various and sundry 2-disc editions to keep rolling out.
Although the moratorium has kept me from getting some of my favorites, think of what the rotating schedule does add...
It makes upgrades possible. If they kept the same discs out all the time, we might never get an upgrade. Consider Lion King 2, Pocahontas (ok, not the best example), Alice in Wonderland. These have all been nicely upgraded in secondary releases.
By the way, have there been any cover previews of the upcoming Pocahontas. I saw the european one, but i'm not too thrilled with that.

MOratorium is nice when you have the dvd, but if you don't you hate it. I missed out initially of the first two waves of treasures and I hated the fact that they all went for $50+, but once I was able to get them all for "decent" prices I loved the fact that I had something limited.
WELCOME!

Not yet. I'm sure the second a cover for the
Pocahontas ME (is it still a Masterpiece Edition or did Disney let that title die off with
Alice? 10th Anniversary Edition??) is released, someone will post it on this forum (I'm counting on it, in fact). I really want a cover to be released soon so I can relish in it.
Ciaobelli, I feel like you do about DVDs of films now on moratorium (not Treasures but you get the idea!). Annoyed by the fact that they're so expensive and sometimes hard to find but happy and almost
glad they're OOP when I attain one (this could have something to do with the fact that I just dished out over $30 for one of them

).

Key,
It seems at the moment that the "Masterpiece Edition" title has died away, with disney opting for the "Anniversary Edition" moniker (i.e. "Mary Poppins: 40th Anniversary Edition", and "Pocohontas: 10th Anniversary Edition", both of which were supposed to be "Masterpiece Editions"). However, we may see a revival of that name for the "Lilo And Stitch" 2-disc set that is to come out later this year.
I theorize this, as Lilo And Stitch has no anniversary of importance this year and it has always been billed in the ads as a "Masterpiece Edition."
Here's hoping anyways. However, I don't think we should be too worried about the names of the editions that come out. As stated by myself, and several others on this forum, the content of many of the 2-disc special editions is very similar to the Platinum line, and thus of a fairly high quality

I suspect Lilo and Stitch will just be a "Special Edition" being as the previous release wasn't labeled as such. That way, they have room to upgrade it again in the future if so desired. After all, Mulan was only a "Special Edition" when by all logic it should have been a "Masterpiece"

While that is probably going to happen, I have to ask if
Mulan was ever billed as a "Masterpiece Edition"?
I'm not sure myself, but at the very least, Lilo and Stitch has been billed as a "Masterpiece Edition", and the only other two to be billed as such were changed so as to put the Anniversary in there.
Like I said though, you're right in that they'll probably go with the rather boring "Special Edition" title instead of the "Masterpiece Edition"
