LATimes Critic Defends 2D Animation!

I didn't see "Sinbad" and doubt I will anytime soon. I think you're right that the oft-repeated explanation for why movies like "Sinbad" fail - namely that the audience's taste has shifted away from classic animation to Pixar-style CGI animation - is total freaking nonsense. DreamWorks says that "Sinbad" will be the last traditionally drawn animation it makes - but why is the company blaming the technology? As anyone who's seen "Finding Nemo" knows audiences have flocked to that movie not because it was done completely on a computer but because it has a funny, lively story, developed characters and some wonderful performances. In other words, it's a great movie - just like such classically (cel) animated Disney features as "Pinocchio" (1940).

It's not often you see people in the media talking sense...

Great to see this view being expressed in a major US newspaper.
I agree - If Nemo didn't have a good story, I doubt people would have kept going back.

Holy crap someone with teh power of the pen actually agrees with what I've been typing here the last few weeks. Makes me think there may be some hope for me afterall ...

I doubt that Disney will listen though. It seems that Home on the Range will be it for traditional animated movies - remember, they even want to do sequels like Dumbo and Babmi in computer.

There is only one thing that will change their minds... big box office! If Brother Bear and Home on the Range are big hits, they'll make more. If they don't make the money, then you will see 2D going away. So, go see em!

Yeah, I guess you're right. Wouldn't that be great if both did so well that we didn't have to watch Disney turn to computers? I'd like that.

As much as we want this to go well I hope Disney puts a lot of marketing behind each film. It's gonna take a lot to get the word out and generate the interest needed to make these films successful.

Yeah, and WE'LL all need to tell everyone to go see the next two movies. I've tried to tell people how cool Disney is... I get a lot of blank stares and weird looks when I look at Disney DVDs....
