Are you going to replace your DVDs for the new format?

I will not.

For a couple of reasons:

1) I already invested a LOT on my collection

2) I think that what DVD offers is already good enough. DVD over VHS was a revolution. Blue ray over DVD will be (in my opinion) just an evolution.

I will buy my favorite movies in the new format but I will not replace my DVDs. I will keep on buying them and still when the new format arrives, unless they stop making them.

Not all of them anyway. Heck, not even most of them but only just the select few that I love when they get released on Blu-Ray/HD-DVD.

Still, it'll probably be a while after release before I get a next gen HD-DVD player. When I get it though, I probably won't be buying anything on DVD unless it hasn't been released on HD-DVD and won't be for a very long time thereafter. I never bought VHS tapes after I got my DVD player so yeah.

Of course, this is unless HD-DVDs cost like $50 a piece or something...

This has already been discussed before, but I don't think we've had a thread specifically devoted to the subject.

As of right now, I don't plan on re-buying any titles I currently own on DVD just for the sake of upgrading to the new format. If they start releasing packages for movies on HD-DVD or Blu-ray that are significantly better (mainly in terms of extras) than what I have, I'd probably upgrade whatever titles recieve that treatment. And I'll start buying new movies on the next format that becomes mainstream.

But I feel the way you do. I've amassed a pretty big collection as is, and I'm mostly content with it. Though the next format will certainly offer enhancements, I'm not going to start all over again.

That's why I decided to open it here and because I'm talking about movies in general.

Another thing I forgot to mention is that extras for me don't do much. With almost 200 movies that range from having few to tons of extras that I don't have the time to watch; or just watch once.

PS

Besides the VHS format lasted decades. Now DVD's "won't"? Just because someone said we can do better. Frankly, no matter how much improvement there is, I'd have waited for a long and way distant future to release a new format so it could seriously improve over the recent one.

My thoughts exactly!
Unless it's my favorite movie in the new format, then I'd probably buy it. :)

Most animted films aren't even worth switching to a HD Format DVD because the films were never that high quality to begin with!

I am not. I already have 200+ DVD's and 1000+ videos that I'm still replacing, so DVD is good with me for a while. :thumb:

I'm not going to, atleast at first. I've invested so much as well! I may only have around 200 DVDs but that sure is a lot for someone who doesn't have a job and many of them were not really so cheap.

I'll probably buy a couple even though I can't play them as a collectable when they go down in price I'm sure. I have a few movies I want to get every format available like ET and Poltergiest... just to collect. :P

I may pick up a few Disneys too just for the sake of collecting. I just don't want to get out of control so I have a list of 10 movies I'm allowing myself to get in other formats and after that none!

Hmmm we'll see.

It all depends on the movie. Will I repurchase "Lost In Translation?" Probably not. Will I repurchase "Lawrence of Arabia?" Most definitely.

It's been said that the upgrade from DVD to Blu-Ray is going to be even more than the jump from VHS to DVD was, especially on larger HDTV's.

I'll probably stick with the DVD versions for a long time because I'm satisfied with the current quality and features of the DVD.

I've already said this, but I'm probably not going to get a Blu-Ray player, period. The reason? It seems like the Laserdisc. People will probably buy the Blu-Ray or HD-DVD movies, although the current huge popularity of DVD will be like how the video was to the laserdisc; too popular.

Plus, many HD-DVD or Blu-Ray players will probably play normal DVDs, and a lazy bum such as myself can't be bothered upgrading for this reason.

I intend not to :D . Again I have to much invested in my DVD's- now with over 300+. I really think they are releasing this new format to soon - It may end up hurting them in the long run. There are still people out there that are just getting into DVD's and VHS is still selling pretty good.

I will not too, ate least for a while.

But what let's me very angry is that: when a new tecnology come, it drops the quality of the old one, want an example? why in the beggining we never had that horrible "color banding" problems? other: last month universal studiios release the balto 3 dvd here with out any subtiling.

I heard originally that one of them wasn't backwards compatible but now I think they both are. I would read up on it but meh.

I think the new format is backwards compatible. But I'm not COMPLETELY sure. I might upgrade after Blue-Ray/HD-DVD has been around for a while. I've invested a small fortune in my collection. I like regular DVD just fine.

I think it was something like HD-DVD players are backward compatible because they use the same laser (red) to read the HD-DVD as well as DVDs. Blu-ray players aren't naturally backward compatible because the laser is blue and so they added in a red laser within the machine to also be able to read DVDs (sort of like VHS plus DVD combo players). Or something like that.

I'm sure deathie will come and fill us in.

Actually I read something like that today. I read that blu-ray isn't backwards compatible (naturally) but the first site I went to didn't say anything about making it compatible but then I went to another site and it said it is backwards compatible and then a third site that said something along the lines of what you had said.

Ah whatever. I'm buying a new DVD player soon and I'm not waiting around for a blu-ray HD-DVD one. The current one is not that old (2000) but I'm tired of sharing it! Sharing bah...

uuh hi!
Image

Someone sent for me :)

Well i have hi def caps that would make you cry and throw out your dvds but they are from Sdrek so i don't want to post them. I have a couple from Pixar courtesy of friends in high places ;) but i've been holding them while i've looked for Disney movie high def scans or direct CAPS images but till now i've come up empty. I specially want to find ones from TLK or now that Jafar has started this thread Aladdin, etc and from the film based movies, old and new. I do have what seems a hi def scan from an actual Lion King print film frame but that's not an entirely fair comparison since film prints are 4th generation optical, or should i say these days, analog, dupes And it's grainy and not digital razor sharp. Even film video transfers are not made from prints these days anyway but from earlier sharper purer elements and in the case of high def they should be (carefully) made from the original negs or direct digital data.
The latest Fantasia threads have given me an idea of doing a high def versus standart def comparison from a 65 year old film but i haven't tried it yet.

I said in the linked thread above that I'd be back and I will 8)
Just want to bring the true bacon. :D

As I have already commented a few times about this, first i gathered all the hdef threads for convinience's sake

As i've said, so i'm only repeating myself :P, the players will probably play the old discs, there probably might even be players that play every flavor of 5" and 3" discs
like there are now universal players that play CD, Superbit CD, HDCD, XRCD, DTS-CD, DVD-V, DVD-A, SACD, PCM,VCD, PAL, NTSC, 4:3, 16:9, interlace, progressive, component, composite, DD, DTS, 2.0, 3.0 4.0, 5.0, 5.1, 6.1 (discrete and matrixed), and whatnot. Even if they didn't, i didnt buy a DVD player to play my VHS on them. But since all those are 5" discs they probably will. You think Sony would make an optical disc player that couldn't read SONY's-Phillips's CD's? CD's used infrared lasers. no? SACD players also play CD's, etc.

If you read my latest puny hd-dvd camp post they were desesperatly cutting their puny advantage in half to include also a half-cooked DVD layer for compatibility. i suppose now they also won't widescreen their widescreen movies for the same reasons... 8) Honestly how would you feel if DVDs took 1 third or one half of their space to dedicate it to a VHS quality layer? :) I'll be blunt but i'll say all this i won't replace my dvds they work fine talk sounds just like what vhs people where saying when they heard dvds was coming. DVD is the VHS of Blue-Ray. I understand economic investment in your collectiion and of course that's a powerful factor. I haven't replaced all my Laserdiscs yet. (I'm probably gonna replace THOSE with Blu-Rays ). But i'm sure Jafar's mouth will drop if he sees a correctly transfered 1080 x 1890 Aladdin in a progressive display. He's actually watching it now in 375 x 656 or less (i don't know if his 4:3 TV is interlaced or progressive. If its interlaced it's less.) That's actually 8 times more for Blu-ray! He's already bought 2 copies of Aladdin. I'm 100% sure he'll buy one more that looks 8+ times better . But of course that's his favorite Disney movie :D
If Jafar's 4:3 TV is 30" and he's satisfied with it's 14" x 24" Aladdin image, he'll love it in the 40" x 70" canvas of a 80" diagonal plasma or DLP projector :P

But anyway, since Blu-Ray has more capacity than hd-dvd, they can sing the "Anything you can do, I can do better" song and JVC already has come up with a Blu-Ray version that includes a FULL 9GB dvd addition for those that want compability if needed. (Other recent developments have been the perfectioning of a scratchproof coating and for Anime fans the addition of Bandai with its 480 anime films, etc etc)

So I'm not gonna replace all my DVDs with Blu-Rays as i haven't replaced all my Laserdiscs. (In fact I have yet to've sold one of those!) and specially unique versions editions will probably stay around here forever, but i'm sure that I will probably double dip on a few of the ones I have, if the hdef transfers are spectacular and done correctly (that very important, they could botch jobs too same as a projectionist can make 35mm film look as "good" as my dvds  ) In the worst of cases you'll record whats important onto Blu-Ray DVD-R's and sell the rest, just like some are doing with their VHS

The comments and speculations that hdef formats might be like Laserdiscs could be right (specially as we have the double format war coming) but I remember on the laserdisc days we had lots and lots of good stuff that VHS couldn't touch, i'm sure that could happen with Blu-Ray. Criterion Blu-Rays? Also remember if there's a war each format will try to outdo the other, things for collectors might get interesting. Laserdiscs were VERY expensive and yet they thrived, you may think they didn't, but when I buy the Platinum Aladdin I feel like when I was buying the Widescreen CAV Laserdisc Aladdin, the main diference is that beside things like that on the shelves, there's lots of more "common" programing. Just like there was with VHS cus DVD has become mainstream. There used to be 10,000 titles on Laserdisc, I think i saw recently that for DVD there were into the 40,000+ titles. If Laserdisc was such a minor format how come there were 1/4th or 1/5th the titles available? I'm sure mvealf had lots of stuff he wanted available in LD. Only DVD with it's cheaper way of life and fairly superior image killed it after it being around for almost 25 years. (And dvd is now choking VHS). So even if Blu-Ray has 1 out of every 4 DVD titles it'll be good.. And that's being Laserdisc like. Maybe it''ll be better. Laserdisc players couldn't play VHS tapes :P

Remember, Jafar is watching Aladdin in just twice the resolution he used to watch it on VHS and he bought the DVD. 8 times better is a lot more than twice.
(Sorry to've taken you as an example Jafarito. I'll make it up to you ;) )

Of course Blu-Ray could flop. No dvds to replace.

Just like DVD-Audio and SACD are flops, ne? So why this week alone there were 13 SACD multichannel releases that I want? ;)

Btw Guru one of them is The Carpenters The Singles. Come hear Karen Carpenter in super duper high resolution as good as real life 5 channel multisurround. Some members on the audio forum I visit were crying.

Ok will the new blue ray and stuff look just like dvds and still use dvd case packaging? :?
