I am not bashing the movies on this line, so don't bash me saying "Beauty and the Beast is not overrated, you dork!". It's just that I think that people here are kind of overrating the line in general (I admit that I used to do this, but I reformed). The problem is, I think that people are saying the line is wonderful just because of the flashy name yet not on the actual DVD itself. This is not to say that every Platinum is bad. They've all been at least just good, yet loads of people gave more attention to The Lion King: PE than to Alice in Wonderland or Mulan that both got a vastly superior 2 Disc DVD release and I think that this was due to the DVD series that the film is in. If highly anticipated releases like The Little Mermaid or Cinderella got DVDs better than Snow White or Aladdin, yet weren't "platinums", would people want to buy them?

I agree. People tend to put the Platinum Editions on a pedistal set high above any other 2-Disc set, when really, the content doesn't differ very much. Sure, titles like Snow White and Aladdin contain more stuff than such 2-Disc sets as Mulan, but as a whole, there's not that much of a gap.

I don't think the Platinum Editions are overrated. I think the 2-disc sets without the "Platinum Edition" name are generally underrated.

Plus, outside of The Lion King, there seems to have been a bit more effort devoted to the line than other Disney DVDs.

very well said. SE's are underrated and PE's are what they are: great dvd's. Lion King was dissapointing, but other than that the line has produced wonderful 2-disc sets. No, I do not think the line is overrated in any way.

My answer's a mix between Jack's and Luke's. I don't find the line overrated. Despite there being a marginal gap in quality between the Platinums and the SE's (or ME's, whatever), there IS a gap, none the less. There seems to be a bit more effort put into the PE's by Disney, especially in terms of presentation and layout (The Lion King withstanding). The SE's/ME's take on a simpler, more straight forward look at their bonus features. Personally, I think what Disney should've done to differentiate the PE's better was to give those films 3-disc sets (trust me, it's possible) and give every other film 2-disc treatment. Perhaps Disney will take this approach in the days of Blu-Ray.

I highly disgaree with you when you say they are over-rated. They are not over-rated at all, they are the best dvds out there They are underrated actually.

I'm sure people would want to buy those more, since they are The Little Mermaid and Cinderella! LoL, I do get you point, and I think Luke summed it up perfectly.

I don't think they are because of these reasons:

1) these are the most popular of the Disney movies

2) Because of that, and the time period between releases people get desperate for them

3) Just because of the pristine video presentation and the incredible DEHTM...


they deserve that much attention.


And besides, aside from these and the very few special editions the rest of the already Disney movies already have their "permanent" editions and not very good ones (Gold Collection).

I wouldn't say the PE line is overrated, per se. Add me to the list of people who think Luke summed it up perfectly, I guess.

It's the other 2-discers (i.e., SE, ME) that aren't getting enough attention, despite the fact that some of the content in them far exceed some DVDs in the PE lineup (nearly any 2-disc SE is better than TLK DVD... King of all DVDs my arse).

Well, apart from the Platinum banner and the fact that they're available for a limited time only, there isn't much that makes it a "line" at all, IMO. As suggested already, other SEs could just as well have been part of the line. There are a number of 2-disc "special editions" and most of them are good - what edition name they use doesn't seem to make much difference.

The dvds themselves deserve all the praise.

No, Platinum Editions aren't overrated they are just a way to make the media (people) to buy the better Disney films. Platinum Edition has to be better then Special Editions and Masterpiece Editions. Most of the Platinum Edition films made lots of money at the box office so they got a better treatment.

I think my feelings have been made clear on this many times before, but I'll say it again! Platinum edition, collector's edition, special edition, masterpiece edition, anniversary edition, I don't care what it's called as long as it's full of good material with a good insight ito the making of the film etc etc.

Yes. They're obviously over rated. Just having them as "Platinum" branding over rates them. Only America (and Canada, naturally ) does this - the rest of the world just gets "Collector's Editions" and why not? It looks like Aladdin didn't sell more than Brother Bear this year - so much for "Platinum" and "highly anticipated" (But then, Aladdin's over rated as a film too, but I won't digress).

Lots of 2 Disc sets beat existing Platinum releases: Atlantis, Dinosaur, Mary Poppins, Sleeping Beauty, Tron, Lilo and Stitch (when you get it) and Pocahontas (ditto) all beat The Lion King and (apart from the work-in-progress, which should have been on a disc of its own) beat Beauty and the Beast too. Plus Atlantis, Dinosaur, Mary Poppins, Sleeping Beauty (in the US), Tron, Lilo and Stitch and Pocahontas all have multiple trailers - suck on that Lion King

However, I do admit that there are some 2 disc sets which do seem to lack something. Such as Mulan (no trailers , too fragmented and light), Alice in Wonderland (filled up with a crappy Virtual Tea Party, no commentary), Tarzan (a little too fragmented for my tastes) and The Emperor's New Groove (a little too fluffy for me). That said, one of the Platinum Editions (hello, Lion King!) was the biggest abomination of the 2 disc sets to date. If they can't get the menu system right, there's no hope for the rest of the disc. Heck, even the single disc Vault Disney/Special Edition titles beat The Lion King! and they had 50% of their content axed at the last minute. I really cannot understand how Disney managed to screw over The Lion King so much.

I don't really understand why Disney US get's so involved with their DVD lines. The biggest joke being the Masterpiece Editions, or should I say "Edition"? Looks like Pocahontas is about to join Mary Poppins as a lost Masterpiece. Any bets on if we actually will get a second Masterpiece release?

For the most part, I would agree with you, BUT I would add the BATB PE as the second disappointment, only because it was presented 1.85:1 instead of the proper 1.66:1. Yes, TLK PE had crappy extras and a few re-animated scenes ( ), but AT LEAST is was presented properly at 1.66:1 AND had an outstanding sound mix.

I don't think the line in overrated at all. The movies on the list are timeless and deserve the distinction. The problem is, the list isn't all en-compassing. Naturally, they're going to be people who would prefer some titles to others. I highly doubt there's a member on UD who's Top 10 matches perfectly with the original ten platinums. It's just not likey. As far as DVD presentation, they generally do generate more excitement and the extras are of a higher quality.
