Everyone is so gung-ho about this release but nobody took the time to see that they left us without what has always been a Pixar DVD staple.


The sound-effect track. It was in the Ultimate Toy Box, A bug's life and Monsters inc

OK, Finding Nemo didn't have one but that was understandable since the movie took place mostly underwater (not many sound effects, then).


What's your opinion on this?

There were plenty of sound effects in <i>Finding Nemo</i>. Honestly, I'd more enjoy an isolated score track, which has been absent on all Pixar DVDs after <i>A Bug's Life</i>.

I take it you've actually listened to the effects track and will notice its absence? I've checked a couple out, but I can't see myself watching the films many times with just sound effects. One scene presented with a mixing studio option like <i>Emperor's New Groove</i> would be enough for me. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like this will be on there. But more important staples (commentaries, short, great behind-the-scenes footage) of Pixar DVDs will be included, so I don't mind much.

Sound effects only tracks, while novel and interesting the first time around are also something I wouldn't want to listen to numerous times.

I don't mind much either. I woulda been furious if a commentary track was absent, though.

I find isolated tracks interesting, since the days of Laserdiscs just for viewing/listening enjoyment and also for study of how the different elements work toguether and are created and mixed, and i wish they could come with the 3 kinds: isolated dialogue, isolated music, and isolated effects. Something like STAR WARS or Empire would be real fun to watch like that. But of course that takes 3 times the space of the normal soundtrack adittionally, and on DVD there's always the problem of space so other more repeatable stuff may have more priority. Maybe with Blu-Ray they can spare the 'round 1GB needed to have the three isolated dialogue-music-effects tracks in Dolby Digital in 6.01 channel surround (18.03 tracks in total! ) and that of course would be equivalent to having a multichannel soundtrack "CD" included in the disc too.

At least with STAR WARS that's imperative. With the isolated music score in 6.01 I can fix Jar Jar's cable tripping screw up

The idea of a sound-effects track is ok, but I greatly prefer the isolated musical tracks. In a way you can do this with some dvds by listening to the Sing-a-long parts, but it would be nice to listen to just the musical background. I must admit I've never listened only to the sound effects track.

The closest thing to a effects track on Finding Nemo was the little music/effects clip (probably only a minute long) on the visual commentary...

I've never actually watched a movie with just the effects all the way through. I mean, the sound is cool and all, but I wouldn't watch the whole movie that way. However, a music-only track would be cool. The track on A Bug's Life is great, and I wish every Pixar DVD had that option. It adds so much to the music being able to see what's happening while the music is playing, and that's something a soundtrack can't give you.
