Hi all,

here in France, on July 20th, Cinderella will be rerelease on the big screens, 4 months before the DVD.. What about the US?Will you have the chance too to watch the movie on the big screen?? And others countries?

By the way, Bambi2 will have a theatrical release in France but.. in february 2006.

As far as I know...no theatrical re-release for Cinderella in the US We get the DVD in October but not big-screen releases

How interesting.. I would love to see Cinderella on the big screen. You French people are lucky!

Really in theaters ?? are you sure ? and how do you know that ?
If that's true, real and old Disney classics in theathers haven't been shown in years !.... especally since the DVD ame out as a home video support.

My 2 cents are that is a smart idea, as there is no Disney animated feature this year until december and Chicken Little, the "reprise" of Cindy in theaters in summer is a good way to attract audience to see the film then make them exciting about the DVD...

I'm SO WITH YOU! They should show it here in the U.S.... in that way, the demand for the Cinderella DVD will INCREASE!!
and plus...I miss this movie; it'd be nice to see it again.

I would be surprised if Cinderella was re-released to the big screen in France. There are certainly no plans to do so here.

You're very luky in France, in Italy we will haven't Cinderella on big screens, but it will arrive to the end of the year (i hope!!!!!)

This is one of the leaked covers, which I hope is official because I love it.

Guys, I'm not saying this isn't a good idea, but bear in mind that the OAR for Cinderella is 1.33:1 (Academy ratio and modern fullscreen.) So it would have to be severely cropped to at least 1.78:1, if not 1.85:1, for theatrical exibition. In which case there'd be more picture if you just stayed home and gave the VHS one last run in the player before the DVD release.

Why pay $6 to go see a movie in theaters that you have on video if you know you'll be getting less out of the $6 than if you watch the tape or laserdisc? If it was something like Aladdin or Lion King, then, absolutely go, but...Cinderella? Yeah, it's restored, but I'll get the restoration on DVD in a few months, and I dunno if I'd see want to see a matted fake-widescreen (like King of Thieves) version.

I see your point JL. My grandparents recentley got a dvd recorder and I'm asking my friend who has the masterpiece edition vhs (I have the original black diamond classic and I'm NOT using it for recording) if I could use it and then I'll be fine until October. Same goes with The Little Mermaid. It is obviously my favorite movie of all time, but I am NOT spending my good money on a sh*tty DVD, when I'm going to get the Gift Set in 2006!!!

That's why ovie theatre won't be replaced anytime soon by the DVD.

Cinderella was shot on Academy (0.600" tall x 0.825" wide (15.24mm x 20.96mm) 1.375 Aspect ratio. For correct modern projection of Academy Films, either of two things can be done:

1- Change the projector lens for one that enlarges the image less, so you don't have to crop it vertically. (Which is the opposite of what one does when projecting Standart Widescreen films). This is easy. If you have the correct lens.

Since theaters haven't been projecting in Academy for nearly half a century, it's not common to have the appropiate lens lying around (tho i'm sure dedicated art houses and film festival theaters might have them), the alternative is:

2- Print the 1.375 Academy image area within the confines of the Standart Widescreen Aperture. In other words reduce the 0.600" height to the 0.446" height (11.33mm) of a 1.85 Aperture and the 0.825" width to a 0.613" width (15.58mm) inside the 0.825" width of the 1.85 Aperture.

In simpler terms make the 1.38 Academy 15 x 21 image shrink to 11 x 16 so that it fits inside the 1.85 Widescreen 11 x 21 Aperture.

Both methods when Projected into a standart wide screen on a theater will look like 4:3 material pillarboxed (unzoomed) on a 16:9 display: A squarish image with black at the sides. If the theater has curtains they can use them to cover the black areas and it'll just look like a regular Academy projection of old.

For example, Snow White when it was restored in the 90's was released this way, using method 2, and I think Fantasia for the digital soundtrack re release or was it the 90's re release might been that way too.

On those ocassions the reduction on the print would have been made thru optical methods.


As to why see them on the theater

Since Cinderella must surely be getting the b/w separations scanned into a 2979 x 4096 pixel (4k wide) digital file for clean up, if they spruce up for it the Cinderella prints could be laser burned from the Digital files preserving the full quality of the 15mm tall negative, which should look much better than a DVD.

Modern films like the Matrix and LOR are being shot in the Super-35 negative format which is ONLY 10mm tall. And for example the LOR II digital intermediate was scanned at 2k wide (854 x 2048 pixels only) (i posted an example of that on one of the high def dvd threads)

Academy's original negative area is bigger than most modern 35mm film formats so they should look fine. Last Academy film i saw in a theater was Treasure of Sierra Madre, made a few years earlier than Cinderella and the image was very beautiful sharp and clean. Looked better than most modern films So Disney Academy animated movies should look nice and purty on the big screen.

(unless of course they are projected by the same guy that made the Incredibles look worse than the DVD on my local theater )
