Note in the title I include the word purpose. So I am not talking about a case where you allready have Bambi on Vhs and then when it comes to Dvd you will have both. This is what I mean. When Bambi comes out not only am I getting it on Dvd but also on Vhs. I do this with my favorite movies. Like I have my Dumbo Dvd and since I like that movie so much I order an out of print Vhs copy of it from someone. With Lord of the Rings and Star Wars I got both the Cinema versions and the Special Editions.

With most movies I just buy the best Dvd edition. If they have two edition and one has a bunch of extra stuff with it I don't mind paying extra to get it. But with my top favorite movies such as Bambi,Dumbo, Alice in Wonderful, Lord of the Rings I like to collect by getting a few Vhs editions, and different Dvd editions ect.

P.S. I must add that I always like anything with new footage over the first edition ever seen in the cinema, except with the old Star Wars Trilogy. I feel the Star Wars Version that came out in 1977,1980,1983 was better then when they came out again in 1997. But I still just had to own the special edtion of Star Wars anyway lol

P.P.S. Not that you need to know this but I thought I would add that with Bambi I allready have different Vhs Editions and when the New Edition comes out I will have 3 Vhs Editions and as for the Dvd I might buy it twice, my thinking is its rare that one of my Dvd's get's a little scratch so what would be the chances that 2 Dvds of the same movie would get scratched , I want my Bambi Dvd to stay perfect so this way I have nothing to worry about more or less lol

I'm not adverse to buying more than one edition of a film, especially if said edition is in another format.

I have the VHS of Pocahontas as well as the Gold Collection DVD and I will be the first in line to buy the ME that comes out on May 5th. (:

If it's multiple editions of the same film on DVD, I may be a bit more cautious about spending my money, but I usually let up if I love the film and the release I have is somehow "inferior" to the newer edition.

If the new version offers more than its predecessor then I would, if the movie is good enough.

I don't think I'd ever do it on purpose. I'd certainly never buy a VHS movie these days; there's absolutely no advantage to it that I can see. It's the same movie in lesser quality without any bonus features. And the prices of new VHS movies aren't even that cheap in many cases. I never really collected VHS, so I haven't bought many DVDs that I already had on VHS. In the few cases where I have, the higher audio/video quality and bonus features make it worth it.

As for DVDs, I usually tend to avoid buying a bare-bones edition of a movie on DVD since a better version of it will inevitably come out eventually. So, unfortunately, I'm waiting on buying many Disney movies due to the fact their current DVD releases are terrible.

i wouldnt have done it before dvd....
but now that they're all these 2disc...special.. masterpiece... collecters... box sets.... its just hard to say no

Some movies deserve it. With certain ones like Lord of the Rings, I'd like to have both the theatrical and extended edtions.

I have my laserdisc transfers of the theatrical releases of the Star Wars Trilogy. I'm not getting any other versions until:

A.) Lucas fixes all the technical problems that are all over the DVD release. (reversed speaker problems, green lightsabers in A New Hope, etc.)
B.) They're the original theatrical releases.

What Lucas *should* have done was released both (theatrical and his "new" vision) versions, or took a hint from the Alien Quadrilogy and included both.

I agree, and that's one reason why my collection doesn't include nothing else than Platinum- and Special Editions. Even if the movie is the thing why I buy the DVD I still need something else too after I've watched the movie. The ordinary Disney DVD:s are very, very bad as DVD:s already because the quality isn't very good (the Pocahontas looks almost like the VHS version) and there's a very small amount of extras. I like extras in every movie, but in Disney movie's it's just a must have.

Would I buy two versions of a movie? Of course. And I have. Many times.

that is a great multi-region collection! I have Disney dvd's from various regions as well. I have two Beauty and the Beasts, two Pinocchio's, two Alice in Wonderlands.. Emperor's New Groove. And I will gladly upgrade collector's editions of Pocahontas, Tarzan and Lilo and Stitch... from whatever region it looks to be the best resentation (packaging, content etc ) Sometimes, France has the best one.. sometime the U.K, sometimes the U.S. or simply the nearby region 2 dutch edition.

Right now I have three different versions of Fantasia (1 on LD, 2 on DVD) The three are totally different. (And yet none has the Pastorale uncensored )

Since PAL came into my life, DVD duplicates have multiplied a little more.

I have Bambi on Laserdisc and look forward to having it directly transfered from the b/w tri-color separations and digitally massaged.

I have three different color renditions of the Wizard of Oz, and 3 of An American in Paris. between all of them that makes 4 LDs, 1 DVD and one S-VHS.

VHS versions? uh uh. nope.

etc etc.

As for STAR WARS, I'm with thatartguy.

The only time I can recall doing that is for LOTRs and Mary Poppins. For each, though, I ended up deciding that there are only x times I'll see these films (a lot, comparitively, but still limited), and the number of times that I'll use the inferior version just doesn't warrant keeping it when I could save some money on the double-dip. If there was good reason for it, though, I would.

Counting laserdiscs, there are quite a few Disney films of which I've got two, three or four editions.

But I wouldn't really buy two editions of the same title "on purpose" unless they'd both have something substantial and different to offer.

In my case just Aladdin:

I wanted the Collector's Gift set and I preordered it. But I just couldn't wait for it to arrive so I bought the normal version a day early of it's release on a store. Then again I couldn't wait for the set to so I ended up cancelling the order and buying it from a store.

Ah, that depends on the title and what bonus features are available.

I intially held off on DVD's at first since the players were so expensive (man, remember when they were over $700?), and of course, I also had to wait to see if Disney was gonna go for the format. Something that also swayed me in that direction was that I could finally have bi-lingual anime.

Anyway, I slowly attempted to upgrade my Disney VHS's, especially since some of the later ones were so bad in quality, like the titles A Bug's Life and Tarzan. There was a lot of visual noise and flickering in the high-contrast areas. On the other hand, I'm careful to hold onto certain VHS's, like Fantasia, since it's not cut the same as the DVD.

I eventually learned to avoid bare-bones DVD's whenever possible after more and more special editions came out. I'll admit it, I had to double dip a few times, like with Mulan and a few non-Disney titles. And I'll be double dipping when The Little Mermaid and a few others return. And I'm not counting it when I replace a VHS.

I did buy the R2 version of Pocahontas because not only did I dislike the R1 cover, I was really steamed that they didn't include the "If I Never Knew You" song. But even though I have that R2 disc, I'm still more than happy to buy the upcoming special edition. The other R2 disc I own is The Last Unicorn [non-Disney] since the R1 disc is so horrible.

Sometimes buying more than one copy of the same movie is justified.

Yes I have a few movies on VHS/DVD, but usually when I buy the dvds I sell the vhs's.[/b]

I have 2 to 3 editions of most disney movies between vhs, laserdisc, and dvd. I will upgrade my dvd's when they come out with 2-disc special editions.

I have the regular releases and the materpiece or collector edition of Mulan, Alice in Wonderland, A Bug's Life, Atlantis, Emperor's New Groove and Dinosaur. I'm planning on buying Tarzan CE, Fantasia Anthology and the Ultimate Toy Box despite the fact I have the regular releases. As I've said: I want then all !!!
