I cant wait to have my own copy of Bambi SE DVD at home. But Im just thinking wether its better to buy Region 2 version (PAL) or Region 1 version (NTSC). I live in the Czech Republic which has a strong tradition in making excellent dubbed versions of the Disney movies. So to have Bambi SE: from Region 2 would be a PRO for me in this way.
Bu I know that Bambi was originally filmed in NTSC. And I want to see it as it was originally inteded to be seen. Does anybody of you knows wheter the us version will have some special packaging like Mary Poppins has (Region 1 version), that was COOL!

Help me, its kind of dilemma for me. Thanx to all of your replies...

I would go for whatever you want. It is likely the R1 will have better packaging, including a slipcover that "opens like a book", but as you say the local R2 copy will include a language dub (as well as the original soundtrack).

So if packaging is important, go for R1. If the soundtrack is important, go for your local copy.

Oh so will the R1 have some nice packaging then?
As its actually cheaper to buy Bambi on R1 at www.playusa.com than it is to buy the R2 for £14.99 at www.play.com

Well. I don't know, but given recent releases, I would expect the R1 Bambi to have an opening slipcover. I wouldn't be surprised if the UK had no slipcover.

Yes there is kind of difference between PAL and NTSC. It is mostly said that PAL is better. But not in case if you´re buying movie made in NTSC and generated into PAL. In this way NTSC should be better. And mostly all DVD in Region 1 are THX Certified. In Europe there are only few Disney DVD which received THX certification...

Its just Aladdin had a slipcover.....so maybe Bambi will?
Although Mulan never, though it wasnt as big release as aladdin or bambi.

You know the differences betwen PAL and NTSC were true for VHS but now with the DVDs, it's the same quality and I can confirm it to you for having most of disney DVDs both in regions 1 and 2.

The packaging policies depend on the countries, even betwen countires in Europen union it varies. But, again, for having both region 1 & 2, I can tell you that the region 1 DVDs are better in term of packaging. You also have a nice 6-to-8 page booklet in the region 1's 2-Dsic Special Editions.

But in term of technical quality, that's the same. Even if, sometimes, region 1 DVDs have a few more bonus features.

Well for Aladdin its just a simple slipcover, its not like a book or anything......

Thanks Jordan! I´ve just decided to by the Region 1 version. The european versions mostly miss THX certification and its the truth that the inserted booklets are better in Region 1. The Czech language version is not a priority for me. Its just only PRO. But nobody except me will ever watch my Disney classic cartoons. And I never lend them to anybody, I take really perfect care of each one everyone of them

Bambi wasn't originaly filmed in NTSC.
Films are not filmed in video standards!

Bambi was filmed in Sequential Technicolor Academy (1.375 ratio) 35mm film at 24 frames per second.

And i'm sure that for this new video edition it was transfered into high resolution computer file (much higher than any PAL or NTSC video) and subsequently PAL and NTSC video masters were generated directly from this high res file. Like most recent high profile movies are.

So theoreticaly the PAL disc will look better.

If it doesn't somebody botched the job.

btw after just coming from checking my special R2-PAL version of Fantasia that I have, to see if it was made from the 1990 version instead of the later NTSC Anthology version, (and indeed it was from the 90 one), again it simply looks more like film than the new NTSC version.

Sorry Jordan, but in my computer monitor PAL discs are the superior resolution edition. And motion is more fluid too! (no 24fps into 3:2 into 59.94Hz judder)




Of course other stuff like PAL speed up or NTSC slow down, packaging, subtitles, soundtrack mixes, languages, supplements, price, availability all are purchasing factors.

And about THX "certification" if the masters were done in the same facility at the same time, THX on one and not the other is kind of a marketing gimmick. like "New! Improved!" THX certification only means it followed/passed THX standarts of quality. *cough* look at how neutral those whites greys and blacks are on that redoriginal trilogy *cough
or they just didn't want to pay for the license in some regions (they have to pay THX to use it)

since i'm in this penthatolic vein, hey, remember all those CDs that say: New! Digitally Mastered! (or remastered). Hey buds, ALL CD's from day 1 in 1982 are Digitally Mastered. They are: Digital!
