I heard 2099net once said the UK Fantasia Anthology was missing US extras. Which ones are they?

The site is wrong regarding "Fantasia" - it says both R1 and R2 include the original roadshow version of the movie, but in fact only the region 1 version includes it (all the other regions have the 1990 edited version).

Does that mean it contains the original Deems Taylor narration, like the 1990 version? That's the one thing I hated about the roadshow version. The extra footage was silent, so instead of just dubbing the new parts, they re-dubbed his entire dialog. I would have preferred that they at least include his original dialog on the parts that existed, on an alternate track.

I may have to pick up the region 2 version if that is the case.

I have both the region 1 and the region 4 versions, but I don't have the old VHS for comparison. It seems Disney did a weird thing with the international DVDs - they released the 1990 version with the edited introductions but it seems they used the re-recorded soundtrack instead. As I said, I don't have the original VHS for comparison, but the voice of the narrator on the region 4 DVD seems identical to the Deems Taylor's re-recorded voice on the region 1 release.

Maybe they didn't want to spend money creating a new 5.0 audio mix with the original Deems Taylor voice and used the same one created for the American edition. Go figure...

Actually, the above links have some mis-information. They claim the original Fantasia has "No cuts - Some digital reframing to remove politically incorrect racial stereotypes however".

Although they did "reframe" some shots by zooming in closer to other characters and cropping out the stereotypes, they did more than that. In other scenes they also altered the original animation by digitally removing the characters, in the same way that they digitally removed Pecos Bill's cigarette. One character that they removed was rolling the carpet up the stairs, so now it looks like the carpet is rolling itself, very unnaturally. Maybe it's technically not a "cut", but it is censorship. Wow, where do these pictures come from? Is this scene available online (I know the other three are).

Anyway, the American "roadshow" version contains the scene digitally modified, with the black centaurette digitally erased, while the internationally released versions contain the scene zoomed in.

I got that scene from a Wonderful World of Disney episode that I taped back in the 80's, called "Magic and Music". They played the entire Pastoral segment, but this was the only unedited scene. In later showings of that episode, they censored that part as well.

It's not available online, but I suppose I could post an animated gif of that scene.

This kind of censorship pisses me off. I wanna kick something when I see altered stuff like this. Ugh...

You are wrong. I just received the R2 DVD and it definately DOES NOT contain the original Deems Taylor narration, like the 1990 VHS and laserdisc had. So people shouldn't be buying this, hoping that they will have the original missing narration.

This DVD seems to be a new hybrid, very similar to the 1990 version, with the non-RKO opening title card, but with the same re-dubbed narration as the roadshow version. Then it includes the intermission with RKO title card like the roadshow version, but the censoring is the same as the 1990 version, strange.

Apparently not all R2s are created equal. Aside there being R2-PAL and R2-NTSC, mine is definitively different to the one mvealf just described and I think it might be different to the one sold in the UK (which i do not have).


Mine has no intermission, the interstitials are edited diffrerently, has 17 chapters, with the last one being the end title/credits sequence.
I've posted the time at three different frame rates so you can compare directly to what you have, be it PAL, NTSC, or original stolen frozen 35mm print

fractions of seconds have been rounded off and times were taken from DVD player display so allow a +/- 1 sec variance or two

I've always watched this disc going directly to the animated segments so i haven't really paid attention to the voice of the narrator but the impression i had was that it was Deems since this one was so different from the Anthology Roadshow version. But I realize now that tho it has a voice over narration, Deems doesn't ever appear in the image at all! (I thought the image was a port from the masters done in the 1990 restoration) Need to check on that.

Hmm, this is very weird. Why would they release so many different versions? No Deems Taylor on screen? He is always in the opening shot of Fantasia. So does it just start right in with the animation? Which region 2 version do you have?

This version i guess could be called the "popular" digest version, the total opposite of the Roadshow version (while the 1990 LD "standart" version would fall in the middle). Hence no "boring dude" making the masses sleep with his long detailed descriptions of music, just brief introductions. Also, since there's no onscreen person moving his mouth, i suppose it was done for easier foreign marketing too since you don't have to dub by lip sync, just do a voiceover narration. Besides the 5.1 English it has 2 other language soundtracks.

It opens with the orchestra but Deems Taylor never shows up, just the voice, over shots of the musicians. (I haven't checked if this orchestra shots are the same, repeats, or alternate takes of all the orcherstra shots of the "normal" version.) I though he was there, but i was always skipping those parts to watch the gorgeous PAL animated sections I knew it was shortened but it was till now that i watched everything intently in fast speed and realized that Hey! waittaminette He never actualy shows up!

It has the musicians doing the jam, the soundtrack part, mickey and the conductor, introductions to all the sections, Stokowski starting and stopping, everything but Deems Taylor's body.

And it's the 1990 restoration, for example in the screenshot scene you posted it's zoomed by cropping out 3/4ths of the image, just showing the upper left corner. By the way, on my shot you can see a blue haired minsk to the left of the brown haired one on the left border of the pic. Image Shack is not agreeing with me at the moment so piccie will have to wait.

I bought my R2-PAL on my trip to the Iberian peninsula. Disney Z5 40009. The dvd case is Fantasia blu

Top: my R2PAL 1990 restoration optical zoom version. Bottom: R1NTSC Anthology "uncut" digitally erased restored version.
Mmm as you can see on the bottom one even there they didn't show the full frame neither... what is it with throwing away picture of the edges everytime?
