I got Beauty and the Beast in December off Amazon Marketplace since I wasn't collecting Disney DVDs at the point of its release (oh, how stupid was Wonderlicious ). I watched all the meaty bonus features (the Lumiere and Cogsworth section) and thought they were great. I did a search here but was shocked to find users bashing it saying it was "fluff" like The Lion King's DVD release. Was it really that bad? I'll admit it fell a wee bit short of Snow White and Aladdin, but was it really The Lion King standard?

p.s. If you think I'm bashingTLK too much, don't get me wrong; it has the great movie, just the actual DVD. I actually found the bonus to be okay, just fluffy and confusing. And Disney false-advertised.

I've never seen the BATB PE because, like you, at the time of it's release I wasn't much into dinsey dvd's. now that i have aladdin and mary poppins and im trying to finsih off a collection of my all time favourites, im very regretful that i didnt make that purchase I heard people said it was overly-restored and since the dvd's had too much info on them there was image loss from compression. i think i'd buy it anyway cause im a collector, but for those who ahve seen/own it, is it really that bad?

it was my first DVD and I like it a lot!

I like every part of it, (also the minigame!!), also the louis and ren stevens part!!

and the lion king DVD, was Ok, but like you just said very confyusing: Africa, America, African Music, Europe, Asia, and that divisions!!, very extrange

I'm baffled as to why so many criticize B&tB, too. Yes, it wasn't as in-depth as Snow White or Aladdin, but it packed in lots of good information and had all the bases covered: commentary, "making of" documentary, early presentation reel, animation tests, interviews, virtual galleries, trailers, and even tv spots. The only thing I think the DVD needed was a collection of deleted scenes. I know there were lots of unused concepts, but we don't get to see any of these minus the original storyboarded version of Human Again and the Maurice version of Be Our Guest. Otherwise, it's an excellent DVD, in my opinion.

As for The Lion King, I find its main fault lies in the navigation system. Once you figure out the trick (which is to explore all of the journeys then head straight to the Glendale section of North America), then there's some nice material to be found. Admittedly, the whole journey documentary as a whole isn't that deep, but with that and the various galleries, deleted scenes, and featurettes, you've got a pretty decent package. Besides the menu system, The Lion King only really disappoints in what it left out of the laserdisc (some featurettes focusing on various aspects of production and the cast, more extensive galleries, and trailers). If the DVD had included everything from the laserdisc and made the interface simpler, it would've been an excellent DVD. As it is, it's just great, but we all know Disney can do better than just great.

I agree! Beauty and the Beast Platinum edition is great! It's one of my favorite dvds!

Beauty and the Beast was my first Disney DVD and I still loved it.
Tell you the truth I had to return my DVD since it had a defect and I got a new one and it works. But now I have two of them one with the slipcover I got from Amazon and one without the slipcover I got at Best Buy. At the time I didn't know it came with a slipcover and I bought it late so when I found out I got another one at Amazon.
In my opinion it's one of the best Platinum Edition Disney release.

I'm fond of BATB's DVD as well. However, I can understand the disapointment with it - its the title that really lowered the bar for PEs after Snow White. Nevertheless, the Behind-the-Scenes material is enjoyable, if a little glossy. And the galleries, story reels, and trailers & TV spots are great inclusions.

As for TLK, I personally think its Disney's weakest SE. Besides the lack of trailers and extensive galleries, I hated the "making-of" material on the second disc. Not only are the "Journey" mini-docs even more glossy and less in-depth than BATB's, but about 50% of it is clips from the movie. And by the time I was done watching all of it, I realized I really didn't learn much of anything about the actual making of the movie - I just listened to people talk about how great it was. Very disapointing DVD, and it will likely be the least of the PEs for me. (Thank goodness for Aladdin's humungous step upward).

The only problem I have with it is the colors of the movie, really. The bonus features were pretty good. I liked the fact that trailers and TV spots were included, those were missing from Lion King and Aladdin only had one trailer (the sequel trailers dont count ) So yeah, a great dvd.

I think that Batb was a great DVD, full a bonus features, really in depth stuff, but it just wasn't wuite as fantastic as it could have been!

Well, as far as I know, Aladdin only had one trailer, so the only room for improvement in its Publicity section is to add TV spots like Beauty and the Beast did.

I see, well the Aladdin dvd was near perfect anyway so I won't be complaining about a few TV spots

For ME, It's ALL about the remastered video/audio that matter. I could really care less if I see another disney circle of stars music video! And by the way, The Lion King has the BEST remastered video/audio than ANY OTHER DISNEY RELEASE! You should see it on my Sony 50" LCD Grand Wega!

Well, many of us do. Although I take video and audio a bit into account, I (and I'm sure others) buy Disney DVDs for the bonus material. There's many major film buffs here who are interested in the making of the movies and that's pretty much what the bonus is. Also, it's a reasonable explanation to upgrade. I have Aladdin on video and it plays and looks okay, so it's the bonus that will make it the reason to upgrade.

Many people here are in the same situation as me (upgrading to DVD mainly due to bonus), so I wouldn't say things so in such a rude manner.

New music videos and the like would be the kind of "features" that I don't care about. Sometimes the way extra materials are treated on Disney's mass-market DVDs makes me prefer the laserdiscs.

some of us are interested in the process of creating a disney animated film and would like to see things like galleries with character designs, pencil tests and abandoned story concepts. Why do you think special features like that end up on a dvd? Just for the heck of it? Naturally the music videos are for little kids and for the people who just want the movie (like you), they create the best possible video/audio. something for everybody!!! ( )

A lot of us buy some dvd's just for the features.... I've done it a lot of times:

I had mary poppins single disc, and i upgraded it into the 40th anniversary ed just for the feautures.. (the same with princess diaries)

The mexican DVD of Snow White is a single disc with the movie restored and all, equal than the US Platinum movie, but without bonus feautures, so I bought the US Platinum just for the feautures...

And also I bought the Lion King Platinum Ed (because of the movie) and also bought the mexican edition to hear the feautures and documentaries in spanish for undestanding better... I've done the same with AladdIn and Beauty and the Beast..

AND...... BECAUSE OF THAT I AM STUPID!! ,in your way of thinking, because I am not stupid....
