Swiss Family Robinson (Remake)

New Disney Adventures

Disney and Mandeville Films are moving forward on two new flicks, a remake of The Swiss Family Robinson and the ride-to-film adaptation of the classic Jungle Cruise attraction.
According to today's Variety, Mandeville, who are producing the forthcoming Tim Allen remake of The Shaggy Dog, will start production on Swiss Family Robinson soon for a Summer 2006 release.

After some time trying to develop a contemporary remake, Mandeville's David Hoberman finally found the right take on Swiss Family Robinson by keeping it in the original period setting. The trade scoops that Buena Vista Motion Pictures Group head Nina Jacobson screened the old film for her family and sparked to the idea of keeping the film in the 1800s.

Greg Poirier (The Lion King II, Gossip, See Spot Run) then wrote a first draft about the shipwrecked Swiss settler family.

As for Jungle Cruise, Disney studio topper Dick Cook was jazzed enough about the adaptation to invite Hoberman to the park to take a ride with him. "It's an adventure film with comedic elements, but its core is almost a family version of Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness, about a group that travels upriver, in search of a significant cure," Hoberman told Variety. Josh Goldstein and John Norville (Tin Cup) will write the script.

One is probably my favorite movie ever and the other one of my faves at Disneyland. Certainly looking forward to Jungle Cruise I am just not sure they can improve SFR that much.

By the way, why is this not in General Discussion. This seems fairly newsworthy to the site.

I always frown upon the thought of remakes, but usually end up liking them, so I won't make and judgements until I see it. And I love the Jungle Cruise ride, but I thought Disney was done making movies based on rides and I don' know if this one will work.

Maybe Luke is being cautious for the time being trying to not get things too near to The Black Hole...

I read the following scoop about Swiss Family Robinson at http://www.darkhorizons.com

"Terminator 3" & "Breakdown" director Jonathan Mostow has left the Will Smith-led drama "Tonight, He Comes", a high profile Sony Pictures drama being produced by Akiva Goldsman, Michael Mann and James Lassiter reports Variety.
No major dramas though, despite citing 'creative differences' as the reason for his departure, Mostow will remain on the project as executive producer.
The studio will begin the search for a new director quickly so that the project can stay on target for a June start. Smith will play a disaffected and underappreciated superhero in existential crisis.
Mostow is expected to get to work on his delayed "Swiss Family Robinson" instead.

Is this the same Swiss Family Robinson project as the Disney remake? I hope so! Looks like it might start moving again, if so.

I though this was a movie, but it's actually a series. It's being produced by 20th Television.
From creators Ron Moore (“Outlander”) and Jon Chu (“Crazy Rich Asians”), Swiss Family Robinson is a modern reimagining of the classic Disney film about a family shipwrecked on a desert island.

Under the multiple-year agreement, which sources estimated is worth in the eight-figure range all in, Moore and his Tall Ship Productions banner will create and develop new projects for across the Disney portfolio. His first project under the pact is the Disney+ series Swiss Family Robinson, which he's working on alongside Jon M. Chu (Crazy Rich Asians).

Q: You're doing Swiss Family Robinson as your first project for Disney under your new deal there. What's the appeal?

Ron Moore: It's a classic movie and one that I enjoyed growing up — and one I've shared with my children. It touches us when we watch it. There was an opportunity to go in and do something new with it. Jon M. Chu (Crazy Rich Asians), who is directing, had a concept for how to approach it that I thought was interesting. There is something about that movie that is optimistic and about family and overcoming obstacles and hardships but having fun at the same time.

Ronald D. Moore is back at Sony Pictures Television, signing a multi-year overall deal with the independent studio. [...] When he moved to 20th Television in 2020, Moore was attracted by the opportunity to work with the Disney cannon. He developed multiple projects, including a Swiss Family Robinson series reboot and The Society of Explorers and Adventurers, set in the Magic Kingdom Universe, for Disney+ as well as A Court Of Thorns And Roses adaptation for Hulu, neither of which has come to fruition.

The die-hard Disney fan then took stabs at creating a “Magic Kingdom Universe” with The Society of Explorers and Adventurers and Swiss Family Robinson for Disney+, both of which died on the vine. The biggest bummer, however, was Moore’s shot at Sarah J. Maas’ popular A Court of Thorns and Roses book series for Hulu, as sources say he is no longer involved in that adaptation.
