And to keep on topic, on Wednesday I was going through the $1 DVD bin at Wal-Mart, and they had this entire collection called "Cartoon Craze". I sorted through it all and found 25 volumes, with various cartoons ranging from:

Superman
Popeye
3 Stooges
Felix the Cat
Woody Woodpecker
Daffy Duck
Betty Boop
Mutt and Jeff
Little Lulu
Li'l Abner
Mighty Mouse

Other volumes also had feature films like Animal Farm (UK animated film based on Orwell book), Gulliver's Travels (the 1939 Fleischer film which I already have), and what I perceived to either be Fleischer cartoons and/or Merry Melodies.

However, one of the cartoons I was NOT expecting was..."The Spirit of '43", a Donald Duck cartoon about saving your money for taxes. I immediately bought that volume (which contained 7 other cartoons, and was Vol. 16), just to watch it again. I remember having that cartoon as a kid, but the tape it's on doesn't play well on the VCR anymore.

Anyway, the quality was really dark, so dark you couldn't see dirt or grain, and since I never saw the cleaned-up Disney copy, I had nothing to compare it too.

I just wanna know, though, why is this particular cartoon released on a cheap DVD. Another cartoon I had on VHS when I was little was The Mad Doctor (Mickey Mouse, BW), and that also had other non-Disney cartoons. Were these cartoons copyrighted with other companies besides Disney, so they also had distribution rights in later years?

I don't know Escapay. I know some Looney Tunes cartoons are now in the Public Domain (but for what reason I cannot say - but in the not too distant past, Copyrights had to be renewed manually after a number of years. Perhaps Warners just forgot on some titles?)

As for Disney, I cannot imagine in my wildest dreams that any post-Steamboat Willie cartoons are public domain. Perhaps the Donald short could be classed as belonging to the US Govenment? - I really don't know- but I cannot see The Mad Doctor being Public Domain.

Today Home Improvement (R1) and Harry Potter POA (R2) arrived. Sadly, Harry Potter is in an Aramay. Curse you, you Snapper moaners!

Well, the last week has been busy with the entire Police Academy Collection arriving in review-disc form.

I reviewed each individually and the whole damn saga here.

I also picked up Spider-man 2 Thursday, but haven't cracked open the plastic.

"The Spirit Of '43" has been one of the most common public domain shorts to be found on budget tape collections in circulation throughout the 90's. I must own at least 5 different cartoon collections with that short featured. "The Mad Doctor" has also turned up on a fair number of compilations.

Now what I find truly bizarre, is how "Hooked Bear" could have ever ended up in these bargain bin discs..?

Picked up Space Jam 2-Disc Special Edition today - a title I've been wanting for quite a while, as I was extremely fond of it in my younger years.

The events of this weekend have left me less rich than I was on Friday, but I have added the following to my collection:

Voltron - Collection 2
Battle of the Planets - Collection 2
Winnie the Pooh - Seasons of Giving
Northern Exposure - Season 1 (super-cheap Aussie version. No parker cover though )

I just picked up the Marx Brothers Silver Screen Collection box set. I now have all the Marx Brothers Movies on DVD - Yahooey

In addition to my Secret Santa gift from MMP(A Cinderella Story), I just bought Elf: 2-Disc Infinifilm Edition.

Even though the SCE is due March 15, 2005 (WOOHOO!), I picked up a barebones used copy of Star Trek: First Contact a few days ago, along with a used copy of The Witches (unfortunately, P&S, which is the only AR they released it in).

This week at Coconuts, they got loads of stuff on sale for $7.99, so I might pick up The Matrix (I'm not to crazy about the other two movies, or any extras for this movie, cause it's kickass by itself).

Also, gonna try and get some Christmas shopping done early and get some DVDs for Kram and Jane.

I got Cold Mountain for $10 and Mulan SE for $12 at a swap meet/flea market today.

My Astro Boy: Deluxe Edition came today.

It is the entire 51 episode 1980s run of Astro Boy in a tin.



Some of the extras include the complete first 2 episodes in their original Japanese (with subs). These episodes were edited down to one for the US run (meaning we got a 51 episode season, to Japan's 52 episodes). There is even a bonus 1960s episode, which might be a hint at a future release.

Well, my most recent DVD purchases include Ice Age, Gone With The Wind CE, and a DVD from the Dollar Bin at a local store of Popeye cartoons with two Felix The Cat toons thrown in. Here's the list of toons on it - all but the last two are Popeye:

Nice little buy. The prints weren't too great, but what do you expect for $1?

Picked up The Terminal at Costco (of Hacienda Heights) today. I wasn't planning on getting the hugely-overpriced 3-disc set, but they had it for $25.99, only $7 more than the bare-bones disc, so I just gave into the urge and got it.

Pals also encouraged me to get the 3-Disc instead of the 1-disc: "Without extra its boneless. Skin of a chicken. Get the 3-Disc man!!!!!"
