I know that it's probably an illegal copy of Song of the South
if you have it, but have any of you seen the film itself?

I know that there are a lot of copies floating around on the different websites,
and I was wondering if any of you had ordered one from them,
and what you thought about the movie,
and maybe even the quality of the DVD transfer you have.

BY THE WAY: Make sure you don't list any websites where you
purchased an illegal copy on here. I don't want this website or any

it was on tv and i forgot about it and i watched the last half of it. it was ok.

Never in full, no. I had several sequences from the film on "Sing-Along Song" tapes as a kid, and watched those a lot. In fact, I watched 'em so much, I actually thought I saw the whole movie. A few years ago I actually realized I hadn't.

I have a DVD of Song of the South. It includes a 1972 TV Spot, the 1986 re-issue trailer, and a near-15 minute radio spot. I didn't "order" it per se, but I was able to acquire it through (here, by one of the members who will be nameless).

The movie, I found, was not racist at all. Just misunderstood. Yes, there are some racial stereotypes (a mammy, a Jim-Crow like character, the slave boy, white trash...), but you gotta remember that even though this was Disney, at the time there was no "politically correct". Gone With the Wind is more racial and it's getting a 4-Disc treatment this month. Birth of a Nation is definitely more racial and it's available (you just have to look for it). There's no reason why Song of the South shouldn't be available.

I think Disney doesn't want to release it because they're afraid that it would "tarnish" their family-friendly reputation. Nothing to do with racism at all, just their desire to save face.

Song of the South, IMO, is told from the point of view of Johnny. He sees everything as-is, and accepts it. So in the post-Civil War era, a 6-year old boy sees a Mammy, is used to it, and accepts it. He sees a Jim-Crow like Character (Uncle Remus), is used to it, and accepts it. It doesn't make it right, it's just showing that that was the norm for this child. He doesn't call them n*gger or anything, he accepts them, which is more than what his mother can do (i.e. forbidding Uncle Remus from seeing Johnny).

ive seen it! I actually found my copy in the mall! i dont know if they were alowed to sell it but i bought it! its a great movies! but i think all the talk on it is very overrated!

I have seen it mnay times, here it the UK Disney aren't as protective of it. It's on TV at least oncea year, and it's been released on VHS a couple of times.

I got a copy of it on DVD through[the internet ], snd I love this movie. Not racist at all!

As I have said many times before, and as I will continue to say in the future, the only offensive aspect of this film is Bobby Driscoll's lacy collar.

I have only seen parts of the Song of the South on the Sing along VHS and on Alice in Wonderland: Masterpiece Edition DVD.
So, no I haven't seen it all but I wish I could someday.

Nice animated pieces, but apart from that it's not such a big deal as some seem to think - IMO...

I've seen it. I bought a DVD via internet from GB and its excellent. I watched it with my daughter and she enjoyed it very much.

This has been discussed so much on Ultimate DIsney, it is the most popular subject in Disney History in the world. If you search for Song Of The South on Ultimate DIsney you will find at least 12 threads dedicated to this rare film.

I saw it in its last American theatrical release in like 1986 or something, when I was a young'un.

Just kidding of course. Actually, I was just enjoying "Zip-a-dee-doo-dah" in the car on the way to work this morning. Although this tune is overkilled, it is nice.

Nope. Haven't seen it. I just know the characters- Brere Rabbit and Brere Bear...

My parents took me to see it in the 80's when it was last released. I vaguely remember it. When was that anyway? 86? I couldn't have been much older than 4 or 5.

I used to watch it very often when I was a kid, I think I might have it still on beta or something... It is a very good movie though

Sadly, no. I really, really, really want to, though. The closest I've gotten was seeing a sing-along from it(How do you do? Fine, how are you? How do you do? How you get on? Pretty good, sure as you're born)

A couple of years ago I purchased the vhs release from the U.K and screened it for relatives. As expected it was well received but everyone was baffled as to why has been shelved in the states, there is absolutely NOTHING offensive in this film.

I own it on both VHS and DVD. It's an ok movie. The best parts are the animated parts though.
