How do u think Disney movies will look on HD-DVD or Blu-Ray?

I've been asking myself that question since the first time I started seeing such fine transfers such as the Lion King, Snow White, Aladdin, or even Beauty and the Beast and found out about the new future formats that are HD-DVD and Blu-Ray. I don't think they can look better than they are right now.

what do you guys think? You think these trnsfers can look any better?
In my opinion, DVD is the ultimate format to watch animated films at their best...

I think it's pretty much a proven fact that HD-DVD and Blu-Ray will look better than the current DVD format, but the difference won't be as dramatic as, say, VHS and DVD. I personally have no plans to upgrade my current titles to HD because they look excellent to me as is, and that's from seeing them on my HDTV, too.

I think that unless you have a massive tv it won't make a difference.

The main thing I am looking for is the extra space those will have, hopefully that will translate into 4 commentaries and 2-3 huge making ofs ala Aladdin

Luke we need one of those

You can compare how Blue-Ray (not puny Banner hd-dvd. Blue-Ray smash!) will look (at least!) with the WORST quality 35mm film format being currently used, here.

Get your LOR2 disc for this

I can tell you right now that these Disney titles when released in HD/Blu-Ray, which will most likely be a LONG ways away, no, not the next DVD format, but the DISNEY titles in HD will be a long ways away. What, every 10 years right? that's at least around 6 years for the first titles to be re-released.

I did think it could get much better than on my 50" Sony LCD Grand Wega w/ my HD-Upconversion DVD Player, HOWEVER, When I saw the making of Shark Tale on HBO-HD, I was floored! It was just jaw-dropping, I mean it looked like I was literally looking underwater, just AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!! Stuff.

Granted Animated films look different than Computer-Animated films, I think there is still plenty of room for improvement for these animated titles, However, I am EXTREMELY!!! happy w/ the way they look now, especially on my TV/DVD Player. The first time I watched The Lion King I got chills it looked/sounded so good :)

WE WANT..................BLU-RAY!!!! Screw HD-DVD, It's dead in the water :)

You may want blu-ray but given the high definition audio formats and there total failures(mainly because they were not backwards compatible) there may not be much of a market.

I think the CD experience is a dead on comparitive. SACD etc. were a huge improvement. But not nearly as much as CD over tape/vinyl.

Likewise, Blu Ray will be a big improvment over DVD but not nearly as much as DVD improved on VHS. After people recently built up big collections they are not going to be in any hurry to do it all over again for Blu Ray.

I think that HD-DVD or Blu Ray is gonna be like the laserdisc...it's not really gonna take off.

EXACTLY!! I think HD-DVD and BluRay discs are going to plummet in sales since almost no one will be willing to go from DVD to HD/Blu, since most have just even gotten DVD!!

You guys do realize that it will be backwards-compatible, right?

It is my understanding blu ray is not backwards compatible but is far higher quality than HD-DVD which is backward compatible. This is the case yes? no?

At this point in time, I can't imagine the traditionally animated Disney movies looking THAT much better on HD-DVD. The thing is, Hi-Def is good for added detail and enhanced colors. But with cell animation, there's not nessisarily a lot more detail to see beyond what we're seeing on DVD, so I imagine. As for enhanced color, I'm sure it'll look better, but I'm very satisfied by the color on the well-done DVDs already.

But who knows? By the time HD-DVD or Blu-ray hits, I might have a fever and the only cure will be cowbell . . . er, getting copies of the new format. But right now, I'm not interested in upgrading every title in my collection once the next format hits.

I feel just like you. I had all the animated classics and many sequels on VHS, and now I'm trying to update them all the DVD. If HD-DVD comes out- I'll be wiped out and won't buy many HD-DVD's

I'll try to answer the backward compability question as I see it, but i don't really follow HD-DVD news anymore (since they started saying it was gonna be just 720 x 1280 pixels. For that, I'd rather buy the thousands of PAL (576 x 720, half of HD-DVD) (including 99% of the Disney) titles available NOW and watchable in my current $50 dvd player and $25 (used :P) high res monitor everyday.

so i'm not up to date on puny hd-dvd (that's a disclaimer :P)

That said, what do you mean by backwards compatible?

If you mean are you gonna be able to play your current DVD's on the Blue Player or the puny-hd player, i'm sure you will be able to, just like you can play CD's on DVD players today.

If you mean can you play the Blue or puny-hd disc on your current DVD player,

With puny-hd, they sometimes say they would include a high res layer riding on top of the low res layer so that current DVD players might read THAT, or sometimes they say they'll include a normal DVD file for compability, since they have SOOOOOOOOO much storage space

Would you like your current DVD's to have a third of their space occupied by a VHS layer or file, for compability? :P

Cool lower quality format compability, less supplements.

Blue Ray with their 50GB capacity could probably do THAT and still have the higher resolution video AND all the supplements if they wanted to. (But why? you want DVD quality, buy DVD!)

Anyway, i don't like formats that say: "Look: we're better! But at the same time, were not!" cus instead of getting a format that's 100% dedicated to improved quality, you get one that's 66% or 50%. (Down with puny Banner hd-dvd. Blue-Ray smash! again :P)

With Blue disc you'll will need a Blue laser player. Just like you had to buy a CD player when CD's came out and a DVD player when DVD's came out. But see, with digital technology digital 5 inch shiny things keep on playing, they just add a chip here and they keep playing the old formats.

I remember people wanting to be able to play their new CD's on turntables. also saying We won't upgrade. CD's are too expensive (they were 50% to twice more!)
Same with DVD.

Did you know there were for a time DVD/Laserdisc combo players? they played Laserdiscs and DVDs,. There ARE dvd and VHS machine combo players. When dvds came out or were announced, were people asking DVD's to be compatible with VHS? i remember they were saying DVD's would fail against VHS cus they couldn't record! (and you had to buy a new dvd player , ets etc)

Also, if you mean, will I be able to play Blue or puny hd-dvd on my current TV, yes you will. Just like you play 16:9 encoded movies on 4:3 tvs.

The raison d-etre (sp anaël si vou ples) of the HD (high definition/high density) new format disc is to have better audio and video quality (and maybe more space for supplements too! :P )

If you're happy with DVD and (specially) if youre more of a budget person, i'm sure we all be able to buy DVHSD's err i mean DVD's for a loong time, just like many people have been able to keep on buying VHS till it's almost ridiculous to not buy the DVD version. same will happen (one day) with DVD's.

Since the difference in quality is what would really make people desire to change formats, that's why dethi has been pushing for the higher capacity disc like the Blue one. (Thunder and Lightning, if they said, hey, if you wait a little while longer we can guarantee 2000 lines for all disc releases from the start in a UV-Ray format, i would say, let's skip Blue-Ray too!) But the thing is Blue can start with 1080 x 1920 pixel 9 channel uncompressed sound ( like yoda_four posted in the MMB Star Wars thread recently) and we could have excellent theatrical quality Little Mermaids in plain jane 1080p Blue sooooon. (Only Cinemascope/VistaVision/Technirama/70mm (and Super-35 films transfered from film directly) negatives would really benefit from higher than 1000 lines basically)

That's why i really think a puny hd-dvd with just 720 x 1280 would tank. (by the way HD-DVD is not it's original name, they started calling it "that", to make people think they were THE next HD DVD)

Blue Ray since it is 1080 x 1920 progressive from the start , (if it doesn't go even better! :P), well it has more of a possibility cus it gives you something dvd can't: True theatrical experience quality, for many movies formats.

the DVD experience is great, it's the best we have after 35mm, it's almost 16mm quality, and in some digital direct cases (like Pixar, or CAPS ) it could be equal or a little better than 16mm.

But 16mm has never been The Theatrical Experience.
You can't blow it up (or dvd) REAL LARGE.

Blue-Ray will give you THE Lion King AND Beauty and the Beast AND the Little Mermaid AND Aladdin AND LotRs equal (or better in some respects) to the theater. (If transfered correctly, of course :P)

I saw a direct digital Incredible's teaser at what could be called quarter image HDTV. It turned me off from having to go to movie theaters anymore  Can't wait till movies come in 1000 lines or better dvds

btw that LOR pic i posted is 831 x 1920 pixels. Most Disney movies will fill the black bars and be 30% taller and sharper than THAT. and no Super-35 film format evil grain.

I wish i had a Blu sized piccie of The Lion King to show :P (or one of the Blue genie he he he) sinnce this thread started with lolopimp's question of how would the Disney ones would look better. Well, if you have one of those disney art books of the movies try to find an image from the movie that it's full page tall or so (i mean the good sharp big ones :P) and compare it to a still of the dvd. AT THE SAME SIZE. Even then, the printed page doesn't have the sparkle and color brilliance of a light emmisive device (a display or movie screen :P) cus printed paper has only about a maximum contrast of 100:1, while Displays can go up to infinity and beyond (typically 500:1 if you have the rooms light on , tho :P) so maybe you could go dethi crazy and scan the book and enlarge the dvd capture to the size of the scan or alternatively print the dvd capture and blow it up the size of the book piccie to have an idea...

(even then it won't be the same as an HD pic rendered or scanned from the original negative pasted next to a dvd capt. Thats why i posted the LOR i found, for UDies that may have the LOR disc, tho Super-35 Digital Intermediate is the worst 35mm quality there is. 35mm or Digitally rendered computer files would look even bettah!)

When DVD's came out i said: I'm not gonna buy them. I've got Laserdiscs.

TLK has 6 times more resolution in Blue than currently. Will I switch?

Okay, first of all, it's Blu-Ray, and second, they will be backwards compatible. And yes, as many of you are saying, we won't notice that much difference...obviously you've never seen animation in HD, because there will be a very noticable difference.

Some say it won't be like VHS to DVD, but you WILLLLLLL notice a difference, unless your blind, stupid, or just obnoxious!

The making of Shark Tale in HD looked LITERALLY at least 4x as good than my Finding Nemo DVD...and I have a 50" Sony Grand Wega LCD w/ an UPCONVERSION! Player, so imagine that...............Blu-Ray...WE WANT YOU NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

huh?!
i think movies at the theatre look like crap?!

i much rather prefer to watch them on DVD and on a high definition television screen....

the colour, picture, comfort is so much better...maybe the sound is greater, but i havent strereo sound so thats probablly why.

Hi:

In fact, there´ll be not a really big difference, because unlike the Live-Action movies, the cartoons are not so full of that teenie-wenie details than make you say "wow, that format rules" when you see it.

I´m really shure than Finding Nemo, monsters inc and others CGI Movies will be a whole new experience, but unless than Disney restore--or maybe I must say "adapt"-- their Animated movies to this new format the difference will be minimun

Um...can someone give me the layman's terms for the following?

What a Blu-Ray is

What backward compatible is

What the differences will be between DVD and Blu-Ray or HD-DVD

If it's all about more pixels or better audio, I doubt I'd upgrade. Just so long as I have a good picture and sound and in the OAR, I'm a happy camper.

This thread needs more Cowbell!!

...err...

To Escapay: Backwards Compatible means that a player will play previous formats, such as a HD-DVD or Blu Ray player playing current DVDs. One of the formats was originally going to use a red? laser, similar to DVD player lasers, therefore it would be easy to make that format backwards compatible. The other format (Blu Ray?) would use a blue laser, which would mean it couldn't be backwards compatible, unless they had a secondary laser to read current DVDs.

I haven't really been following any of the news about either format, though, so I am not sure if either or both are going to be backwards compatible.

One thing I would be interested in seeing with either format is complete seasons of shows on one disc, especially things that may have been too big to put on DVD cost effectively, like The Mickey Mouse Club (at least 65 1-hour shows for the first season??)
