The Platinum Line Release Schedule

Hi, this is my first post here so I'll start off with one question I've always been trying to ask and vent off on.

It is the timeline between each release, having just bought my first ever Disney Platinum Edition DVD which is Aladdin I will say that it's a great line but even now that it's up to 2 Disney films being released each year I still feel it's quite daunting to be waiting like 2+ years for some of the other great classics such as The Little Mermaid, Cinderella & the newly added Sleeping Beauty which I don't know when it will be released (maybe in like 4 years). I'm not trying to sound likes someone who wants everything to come out straight away but it's the waiting that I can't stand sometimes, lol I don't know if I can still hold it for the release of The Little Mermaid by the time it comes out.

Another thing about the Platinum Line is the discontinuity of it and being put on moratorium for 5 years, now this may not sound much but for to me I think it's a little bit long to be waiting for it to be re-printed especially seeing how I missed out on buying the Platinum Edition DVD for Snow White when it came out because at the time I was relying on my parents for pocket money or on them buying DVD's but now I can save up my own money and buy whatever I want.

What's even more difficult is that I live in Australia and after a Platinum Edition Disney DVD gets discontinued here there is literally ZERO chance of ever finding it in any video retailers or shops, it's also sad since I really want to get the Platinum Edition DVD of Snow White & The Seven Dwarves but it would mean I will have to wait till 2007 or 2008 for it to get re-printed, some of you will say import it but the thing is I don't have a credit card nor does my parents and I'm totally clueless when it comes to payment methods at the bank such as Direct Deposit & Money Order etc.

Well anyway enough of my pitiful woes, I'm glad I bought the Platinum DVD of Aladdin as it will kepp me going on the Disney Platinum Line to come but what made the purchase even more satisfying was that i got a free DVD along with it that was On Holiday With Timon & Pumbaa.

Welcome to the forum! I can sympathize with your outlook, as I mostly agreed with it when the Platinum line first launched. That was when it looked like we'd have to wait 6-9 years for The Little Mermaid, 101 Dalmatians, The Jungle Book. As it is, in less than a year from now, every Disney animated classic will have been released to DVD. The Limited Issues obviously aren't satisfying DVDs of their most beloved films, but the last 4 of those to be revisited will go Platinum within the next 3 years.

Most people who didn't buy <i>Snow White</i> on DVD either didn't have a DVD player and/or lacked the vision to think ahead. It is not Disney's fault if someone didn't buy <i>Snow White</i> on DVD. They made it clear it hadn't been available on video for years, and would not be available again for many years. Furthermore, it's still obtainable from BestBuy.com (though they don't ship worldwide), Amazon.com Marketplace and several other places online. Something like <i>Sleeping Beauty</i>, which even Disney hasn't made up its mind if the last release was Platinum or not, is also readily available and even if it doesn't bear the "Platinum" name, it bears the Platinum standard, moreso than <i>The Lion King</i>, I think.

What you have to remember is that Buena Vista Home Entertainment is a business like any other. In the case of their animated DVDs, their product is movies that have been favorites for many since childhood. But they're still trying to earn the most profit they can, while delivering a quality product. Their Moratorium practice has obviously proven successful enough in their eyes (and their sales records) that they are still employing the technique. And their scaled-back moratorium (of 5 years) doesn't seem particularly offensive, since it's easier to buy out-of-print movies now than it ever was (even if the potential of getting bootlegs is higher too).

Ultimately, I don't think there's too much room for us to complain about the Platinum line. Two releases a year allows Disney to devote a proper amount of time to putting together and marketing their massive Platinum Editions, and almost certainly maximizes their sales. They could probably get by upping that to three, but that would mean some drop off in sales and some discouragement for people to try and complete the whole collection.

Anyhow, welcome again to the forum. I look forward to hearing more of your thoughts!

The best info this site has on the Platinum Timeline can be found here http://www.ultimatedisney.com/FAQ.htm in case you haven't gone by that page. At least they have speeded it up 2x from what it was before!

The current schedule is still frustrating for collectors I know, (specially if your favorites are at the end of the timeline )
Disney has always had this way of releasing videos an puttin them in moratorioum after a while. It took me about a year and a half after i decided to get the OOP treasures to get them!

This site's out of print page http://www.ultimatedisney.com/OOP.htm has helped me knowing what is becoming preciously scarce soon (or already is!)

A couple of weeks ago the topic on the international forum: Snow White & Beauty And The Beast (Region 4) still available http://www.ultimatedisney.com/forum/vie ... php?t=5488
might be helpful in finding some of the Platinums you lack :P

Some companies accept money orders or checks. (Don't know about Oz but here in the US well you can go to the post office and buy a money order for the amount you need, and then send that piece of paper to a reputable company  in exchange for goodies :D ) You could write to/read mail order companies' web pages for info on their policies/payment methods. I'm sure on this forums people have mentioned their favorite companies. And you can always support this web site by buying through the support this web site links (which include several Amazon stores, etc) :P when you figure all this out or get a credit card etc!

(I'm starting to sound like Luke now :P)
