I am sorry but this movie, IMO, deserves to be on the platinum list more than 101 Dalmatians or The Jungle Book. It's a classic from Disney's golden age and is pure gold, or rather platinum. So why isn't it on the platinum schedule?

This film has just been given a ''masterpiece edition'' release, it if were to be given a platinum edition release i can't see there being an improvement on the content, it's a pretty good disc, considering it isn't usually classed as one of diney's greatest films!

As i've said before masterpiece editiom, platinum edition, collector's edition etc. Does it really matter what the DVD is called?

It's not a Platinum because it's not one of Disney's top selling titles. This doesn't surprise me because unlike other titles, Alice has always been on the market and re-released on video and DVD over and over again. In contrast, The Jungle Book and 101 Dalmatians have both been released on VHS only twice, and once on DVD. Personally, I'd replace those two films on the Platinum schedule with Alice and Dumbo, Alice because it's a superior film and Dumbo because it's far more revered (even if I don't care for it much).

Alice in Wonderland joins Beauty and the Beast and Robin Hood as my favourite Disney movies.

Alice in Wonderland is already got a great DVD treatment under the Masterpiece line. It does not need to be released again. Like Luke said, it doesn't matter what the name of the disc is, it's the quality.

Boy, we like to go into the "Platinum" semantics, huh? <i>Alice in Wonderland</i> got an excellent 2-disc set earlier this year. It's easily one of the 10 best DVDs that Disney's put together for an animated classic that predates the DVD format. It's not called a "Platinum Edition", but "The Masterpiece Edition." But short of an audio commentary and a 'hip' music video, it's exactly like a Platinum Edition.

The 10 titles that originally comprised the Platinum line were not chosen because of their quality or their historical significance. They were chosen because they had sold more copies on video than the rest. Generally, but not always, there's some connection between quality and number sold.

But in any event, I could understand this desire for a "Platinum" Edition for something that is not only excluded from the 14 titles in the collection but also has not gotten and is not getting 2-disc Special Edition treatment anytime soon.

We use the "Platinum" name with more importance than Disney does. Yes, <i>Aladdin</i> upholds a highest quality on DVD. But is <i>The Lion King</i>'s DVD any more special than the "Special Editions" of <i>Mulan</i> and <i>Sleeping Beauty</i>? Not really.

Thanks for the welcome. I hadn't realised there was a board this size celebrating Disney. I'm looking forward to exploring it more.

And in response to your second paragraph: I'm not sure if it was aimed at me or the author of this thread (I am assming the latter) but I wasn't particularly pushing for a Platinum release. As you said - I don't care what the name is, as long as it's good.

However, I had not realised Alice was out on DVD. I shall have to wander into town tomorrow and see if I can pick it up.

Well they could drop the stupid virtual Wonderland party & add the rest of the extras that were on the LD. They could also add a commentary track.

have any of you ever wondered what we complain abut if the PE line never existed ? I mean to compare other movies to it? Lol I have. Lets be fair guys it may not have the title but it really did get a spectacular treatment. Lots of great features on it and beautiful image but thats just my opinion .

I do agree that Alice got solid treatment, but (yes, here I go again so flee if you're tired of hearing me say this) we all know Disney could've done better. The DVD is essentially a collection of archival material without anything to put them in the proper perspective (whereas Sleeping Beauty's archival features had intros and text screens before them). There's nothing retrospective about the film's production aside from some comments by Kathryn Beaumont during the "I'm Odd" and "From Wonderland to Neverland" intros. It also bugs me that while Disney was good at porting over the video features from the LD, they left out the majority of still and audio features. 59 stills out of the hundreds available? 6 (technically 7) song demos out of the 20 or so found on the LD? It seems to me Disney was either slacking off with this release or was purposely holding back for a future release. If Disney had included a commentary track and featurette along with the missing LD features, the Alice DVD would've been astounding, rivaling even Snow White's. As it is, it's simply a great DVD, but for an Alice freak like me, great just doesn't cut it.

Right on!! The dvd was underwelming

In the same way I don't understand how/why Disney's going to make Sleeping Beauty a PE.

I don't think there's something (or almost nothing) they can add to the Special Edition.

I think the decision about the gallery may have been a combination of the International releases having the same small gallery (or scrapbook at they call it) and most importantly Disney published a Mary Blair book around the time of the DVD release, and didn't want to eat into its sales.
