Nothing really special about the contents if you already own the extended edtions.
It's just all 3 movies in a 12 disc box set.
Still....it's proper purdy.

well i haven't bought any LOR yet so that box has been looking for me

(unless i decide to wait out a little longer for the
bluer set)
(i still haven't even seen #3 yet

so i've only seen about half (or less!) of the whole thing)
but i've read the Simallirion (the Red Book)

I hope we can at least purchase the box itself for keepsake reasons. I would want it.

I have been buying both the theatrical and extended DVD versions of the movies as they have come out. I figured that Peter Jackson would play it straight with the customers and give as much as possible right away, and he has. If more bonus material is on its way, I would guess that it will wait until a high-definition format like Blu-Ray.

it's just the extended edition features and none of the extras or is it basically a mega set compiling everything thats already been included in the 3 extended edition releases to date?

I'm thinking its all three extended edition box sets together.
Yeah, it'd be nice if you could purchase the box on it's own..but anyway, that's pretty cool.

I haven't read anything previously about this... in fact, I was pretty sure I read a statement months back indicating that there would be NO ultimate extended edition box set compiling all three releases. Can someone please point me in the direction of a site or press announcement where this is discussed because all this thread depicts is a picture of a box that doesn't really mean much to me.. Thanks.

Okay, I did some searching and this seems to be a R2 release:

I hope it eventually finds it's way to R1.
