Hi guys!

No, I'm not officially "back" yet - I'm on a downstairs computer for a while. I'll get my own PC back on Thursday afternoon and will be back in full swing soon thereafter.

Anyway, I've got a delima regarding the Lion King gift set and was wondering what the general concencus here is.

This fall is shaping up to be the most expensive yet for DVD fans with the sheer number of must have DVDs being released during the third and forth quarters of the fiscal year. Now, I want to own several of these - to list them would take forever and is really irrelivant to the topic so I won't bother doing that - but sufice to say there are a huge number. Anyway, I live on a $10/week allowance and that's all, so it would be extremely difficult for me to afford everything as it is. Then you throw in the big $35-$50 Lion King gift set and it makes it even harder.

My delima is: Should I buy the Lion King box and sacrifice owning a few other movies? Or should I buy the regular version for $15 or so and have the rest of the money left over for other DVDs? I mean, I'd love to have the sketched & signed lithos and the collector's book and box. But should they come at the cost of not owning two or three other movies? Right now I can name two other DVDs I want that are both due on the same day as Lion King and two more within two weeks of its release which it might be difficult to afford if I blow all the money I have to get lithographs and a book. Plus I'm still chasing the Ultimate Toy Box.

Now, if I get a lot of birthday money the case might be different but the way it's looking now, I have to choose between the uber-fancy Lion King and not as many other movies or the regular Lion King and a bunch of other movies too. Which one should I go with??

hmm depends how badly u want the other movies i guess if u really want them i say NAY but if u can live with out them and there not important and u can get by with just renting them i say YAY!

It's one of those depends. Remember the treasure sets are coming out the following month and those are more limited than the box set of Lion King. Sounds like you need to make a list of the movies you want in order and then decide based on that.

Im gpoing for the regular Platinum, I think the only difference is that the gift set comes with a book and a lithograph or something like that. I dont care about a book though, Im buying it for the DVD plus that big case will take up way too much shelf room and wont match the other Platinum sets that I have. I think its waste personally.

I kind of have the same dillema as you. This fall is going to be extremely expensive and I have the choice of getting just the DVD and then getting another movie or getting the gift set. I've already budgeted in getting Hulk and The Matrix Reloaded which both come out in October and I've budgeted in the Two Towers: Extended Edition, but not Finding Nemo, The Indiana Jones Trilogy, or any of the other movies that I'll be wanting. The Lion King Giftset looks awesome to me. I've never really been interested in any other giftsets before this one so I'm not totally sure what I'm going to do.

I say you just evaluate how much you want those other movies as opposed to the lithos, book and box. If I were in your place, having a $10 allowance as the only source of income, I definitely wouldn't be getting the giftset. A whole month's worth of allowances in the expensive fall just wouldn't work. So I'd suggest just getting the DVD. If you do that and decide that you really want the giftset afterall, you could always just sell or trade the DVD by itself and get the giftset later or ask for it for Christmas or something.

Regular release for me.

Just like with the Lord of the Rings sets, I'll got for the multi-disc release (4-disc EE sets in the LotR trilogy) but have no need for the top-of-the-line Box Set. It looks great, but I just don't need that much "stuff" with the movie for an additional $20.

Now...if it were closer to the $29.99 price tag I might've considered it as it probably would have gone for $24-$25 release week.

Jake -- save that additional $$ and spend it on other releases. You are dead on when you say that this is shaping up to be a huge fall season for DVDs, so ration your dollars wisely to maximize your investment. There are way too many great titles coming for you to spend a lot of it on one place!

I am pretty much in the same boat as you, but w/ no source of income allowance or otherwise... I considered getting the collectors gift set, but decided that it really isn't worth it, but then again the Lion King isn't my #1 favorite movie, but if it were say, sleeping Beauty, Aladdin, Little Mermaid, or Beauty and the Beast, I would probably be trying really hard to get it...

How much do you like the Lion King, and how much do you want the extras. Remember, the Hulk, Matrix, ect. will be available for a while after their inital release... So if you buy the gift set, you can always purchase those at another time, or reguest them for x-mas .

Still I say regular, for me, just not enough money for everything

They say the gift set's really not worth getting, since the book isn't that great...it's supposedly made up entirely of things we already knew, and art we've already seen. Don't know myself-this is just what I've heard.

Most other movies, I'd go for the regular "Platinum Edition" DVD, but this is The Lion King and I'll get the Gift Set, most likely. I did get the Lord of the Rings FOTR Gift Set, and in retrospect, that was kind of a waste of money. But that was a movie I liked, and Lion King is a movie I love.

I say go with thwe regular platinum and use the leftover money on other releases. Why? Because, first of all, the signed lithos aren't original drawings, they're line renderings of the characters from the DVD's cover. Second, TLK book most likely repeats information found on the DVD's contents, so why shell out money just to get the spoken tidbits from the DVD in print form? Your leftover money would be much better used on other releases such as The Two Towers extended edition, the Indiana Jones trilogy, or other releases.

i say get the gift set since is limited and is a collector's item and it be worth more once it goes OOP just a thought. nice to see you posting jake!

Are these limited Editions numbered in the same manner as the Tins? I honestly don't know, as I haven't looked at the specs to closely. And it might be worth more but would you really think of selling it at some point? The pricepoint as is I'd think that few folks would be buying up copies simply to hold them for an eBay bonanza a year or two later.

well no im not going to sell my copy but is nice to know you own something worth big bucks as a collector it gives you pleasure to own it! as for me im getting 2 copies of the box set and 2 copies of the reg dvd

If you're low on money, I'd suggest getting the regular Platinum DVD set. You can spend the $20 USD that you saved on another DVD. However, if you have an extra $20 USD to spare, get the Collector's Gift Box Set. The book in the Collector's Gift Box set probably contains pictures we've already seen. True, there may be pictures of the new "Morning Report" and restoration process. Like someone said before, these materials may already be on the "regular" DVD.

Prince Phillip suggested that you request the Collector's Gift Box Set for Christmas. That's a great idea too!

If you have $70 USD to spare, do what I'm doing and buy the Regular Platinum with free Lithos, plushies, collectible pin AND the Collector's Gift Box Set.

I don't think I'll buy the gift set or the regular. I think that this DVD will be like the BEAUTY AND THE BEAST DVD last year, which wasn't a very good DVD.

If you truly enjoy this movie I don't know how you can pass on this DVD release. And I'm not trumpeting the BatB release, but what was so bad about that one that would make you consider passing on the PE release of The Lion King??

Yeah. I wouldn't say that Beauty and the Beast was a bad DVD. There were some issues with picture quality and the supplements were disappointing compared to most other Disney Collectors' Editions - but it was still head and shoulders above 90% of all DVDs released these days.

That said, somehow I think The Lion King will be a bigger disappointment as Disney seems to be dumbing down their DVD releases more and more (or should I say, making them "Family Friendly"). They now seem to think we won't be happy watching archive materials from the time of the movies release so have to refilm everything to make it more appealing and modern.

Oh well. Time and tide melts the snowman and all that. In some respects it's exciting waiting to see if the Lion King lives up to our expectations for not. I wouldn't trade these months for anything!
