My daughter just discovered Pocahontas (via Disney Princess Sing-a-Long Songs) and now I want to get her the DVD. Is the special edition still set for release in January of 2005? Also, how is the quality of the current DVD release? Thanks in advance.

In France, Buena Vista has announced this edition for December 2004 but I don't know if it'll be the same date in the U.S.A...

It's for sure coming in 2005, though no one's positive of the date. January seems to be the most likely. The current DVD isn't enhanced for widescreen tv's and the picture quality isn't the greatest. The SE coming next year will receive a new anamorphic transfer, will have the song "If I Never Knew You" integrated into the film, and will contain the following bonus features (and then some):

I think I just might buy Pocahontas. Wasn't really planning on it but I think I just might. :) Those special features look good. Really can't wait for Lilo and Stitch though.

Both are out in Australia in November (the 10th and the 18th respectively).

Mary Poppins also debuts on November 10 here.

Yeah, I'm itching for the new release of Lilo & Stitch. :)

And the one for Pocahontas, too, of course. Though not to the same degree. I bought the soundtrack, though, a few months ago ... so I could listen to the songs and score. Makes me want to see the film again, and I was going to buy the Gold version, but bit my tongue and forced myself to hold back. I'm waiting. I haven't seen it ... in several years.

If Disney releases "Pocahontas" in January, we might be getting a press-release by October. But if the intend to cross-promote special editions and release this alongside "Bambi" (like the "The Lion King-Sleeping Beauty" and "Aladdin-Mulan" combos), I would expect it to be released in mid-February or late-March.

I hope Disney releases the Pocahontas Special Ed. DVD soon cuz with the current price drop on the Gold Coll. DVD, I'm really tempted to just buy that. But then I remember people saying how the transfer isn't too good and isn't anamorphic widescreen etc.

As for Lilo and Stitch, I will be getting the Special Ed. DVD for that one as well when it is released, eventhough I already own the single disc version.
If its a 2 disc set, then its a must have for me!

Thank you very much. I was delighted to find this forum. If you ask about a Disney release on most DVD forums, you get a bunch a slack from folks.

So are we assuming that Lilo & Stitch SE will accompany Cinderella this time next year?

Isn't Lilo and Stitch accompaning the release of the sequel some time in summer of 2005? I would prefer Hunchback, Hercules or Dumbo to accompany Cinderella :P :)

Right now, I'm predicting:

Pocahontas - Jan. 2005
Lilo & Stitch - May/June 2005
Dumbo - October 2005

I'm most anxious for Pocahontas, but Dumbo deserves a new set the most - the transfer on the current DVD is incredibley dissapointing.

Don't shoot me for saying this, but I don't think Pocahontas will be out in January. It seems to be the "Platinum support SE" for Bambi, in which case it will probably be coming closer to Bambi. It could come out first, but Mulan II will be Disney's major release for February and I don't think they'll want to double up. (Aladdin and Mulan are both this month, but they're both classics; if you were to pair a cheapquel and a theatrical classic, everyone would go for the classic and it'd be detremental to Mulan II's sales.)

For Pocahontas, I'm going to guess either late March 2005 or early April, probably the latter. Unless they wanted to pull a fast one and release Lilo & Stitch in March and Pocahontas in June to coincide more specifically with its 10th anniversary.

Lilo & Stitch would actulally make sense in March, with a sequel following (in theaters?) in....June? Look at how Disney has structured the releases of The Lion King, Aladdin and Mulan sequels -- each 4-6 months prior to the bow of the sequel, to allow it to stand on its own two feet but also drum up intrest in the next release. So it's quite possible we'd end up with L&S in March and Pocahontas in June, which I think would be kind of nice.

Well, if we're all throwing our Calendar-guessing hats into the ring, I'll throw mine too!

<i>Pocahontas</i> could come out in late January, but it is getting close to the point where we'd have definitely heard about it. <i>Alice</i>'s press release came on November 10, and the DVD was released the last Tuesday in January. It's a possibility, certainly. And Disney usually does have some major home video releases in January, all we know at this point is <i>The Village</i>; I wouldn't classify the Aladdin Sequels 2-Pack as "major" but that's there too. I'd say anywhere from January to May, we could see this.

As for <i>Lilo & Stitch</i>, I guess that's going to depend on what's happening with the sequel. If it was going to be in theaters, wouldn't we be hearing more and wouldn't it show up on the Walt Disney Pictures site?

August is a big release month, or I could see another one coming in September, a month before <i>Cinderella</i>.

Actually, my speculation is pretty rampant. Disregard. :)

This is what I think:

Pocahontas: February, March, or April
Lilo and Stitch: May, June, or July
Dumbo (it's the only potential SE release that makes sense next to Cinderella): September or October

I think the Lilo sequel can go either way in terms of theatrical or DTV. On one hand, Disney would definitely be promoting it more now if it were theatrical. On the other, the filmmakers from the original are working on this, and I don't think there's yet been a case of a theatrical Disney director/producer doing DTV. Either way, a summer release seems like a given. As for Pocahontas, January is definitely no longer an option. Press releases from Disney are usually issued 3 months in advance (more in the case of the Platinums). February is also seeming slightly implausible because usually before a press release is issued, inside sources will sort of foreshadow one coming (like a retailer giving out a release date, etc.). We have yet to hear any sort of rumors for Pocahontas in Region 1 to pave the way for a press release, so February's looking slim. I think March or April seem to be the most likely. In the case of Dumbo, my reasoning is simply that any other potential SE (Hunchback, Hercules, etc.) just doesn't really go hand in hand with Cinderella except Dumbo. Sleeping Beauty and Lion King were both grand epics from separate eras of Disney. Aladdin and Mulan are dramedys that lean slightly more to the comedy side. Nothing matches Cinderella except for saying that Dumbo's a Walt-era classic just like Cindy.

Yes, I realize I ramble too much. Congrats if you read this far. :P

I agree that Dumbo is more likely, but I'd much rather see Hercules released alongside Cinderella. I wonder if perhaps a PE/ME release of Dumbo might be too big a release to double up in the same month as Cindy? Also, Dumbo has already gotten great DVD treatment, but that's probably a moot point, as we know a 2-Disc is coming at some time in the relatively near future.
