I made this thread so we could make a list of disney animated classics that will most likely be coming to a 2-disc DVD or a better version some time in the near future that are unanounced. This is so we don't have to double dip all the time. What movies do think this most likely happen to?

The Hunchback of Notre Dame (2006 for its 10th Anniversary?)
Hercules (Frankly, I can't see this NOT getting a 2-disc as it'll be the only 90's features besides Rescuers Down Under not getting one)

Of course, anything's possible, but I can't see anything on the "limbo" list getting 2-Disc treatment as Disney doesn't hold them high up enough (except perhaps Pooh, but that got a solid 1-disc already). I think we may also see re-releases of the Tarzan and Emperor's New Groove CE's to promote their sequels, and perhaps a Fantasia 2000 re-release to coincide with the Platinum release of the original.

Speaking of 2-disc releases, it seems Disney has indeed dropped the ball on releasing "old" live-action movies as 2-disc sets. And that is a shame, because the Vault Disney/Special Edition series brought us some of the best DVDs ever released.
By the way, do you there is any other important Disney live-action feature that warrants a 2-disc edition? The biggest one that was missing, "Mary Poppins", will be getting its special edition this December. The only other movie I can think of is "Darby O' Gill", but this one is already being released as a 1-disc "not-at-all-special" release. Besides being a gigantic flop, I think there is enough material to make a 2-disc "The Black Hole" (a special archive LD edition was scrapped some time ago). We also have "So Dear To My Heart" but, unfortunately, I don't think there is enough material in the vaults to fill 2 discs (in any case, the current edition has some pretty solid material).
I believe that there is a lot of "Bedknobs and Broomsticks" and "Pete's Dragon" in the vaults, but I don't think they are popular enough for Disney to put their money on special DVDs (besides, the current DVDs are great already). Other movies that could make into very good special editions are "The Happiest Milionare" and "The One, The Only (...) Family Band", specially the former, since it was the last feature with Walt's own touch.

Of course, there is "Song of the South" as well... But that's another story.

Joe- I think that Pete's Dragon and Bedknobs and Broomsticks (especially the former) are among some of the studio's more popular "classic" live-action features. It wouldn't surprise me if they get rereleases at all. But then, I have a hard time distinguishing realistic expectations and wishful thinking. Were there laserdiscs released for these? If so, how much material did they have?

The only other live-action flicks I see realistically being next in line for 2-Disc releases are Song of the South, maybe some or all of the Herbie movies, Honey I Shrunk The Kids, the new Parent Trap, and the Santa Clause. And not all of those are all that likely.

I think Hunchback & Hercules are shoe-ins for 2-discs, and probably sooner than later. Dumbo is all but confirmed. After those three, I'd say that Oliver & Company and The Rescuers would be likely. They were relative hits, weren't they? They seem to be fairly popular as well, and they The Rescuers got abismal DVD treatment. Heck, it even spun off a sequel (even if for apparently dubious reasons, lol).

I didn't know The Emperor's New Groove was getting a sequel. That was one movie I was almost certain wasn't. What on earth is the story line going to be? Unless they repeat themselves, the title will have no relation to the story ( unless they replace the word "Groove" with something else). But, if they can get the same voice talent, writers, and director back, this one should be great!

You know I was thinking the same thing. I saw the movie yesterday and saw that at the end it actaully said THE END. See now that bothers me if the movie finshes like that why go back and try to add more to it? But thats just me.

Does anyone think The Emperor's New Groove will be re-relased as a 2-disc?

I agree completely. I have a good idea for doing more 2-disc releases of live action films as well. Just too bad Disney's doesn't have me working for them.

I'd be glad to just get some bonus features (ala Thomasina and Ugly Dachshund) on most of the unreleased live action films (like Monkey's Uncle and That Darn Cat!), but these modest discs greatly pale next to the wonderful Vault Disney line, and even the pared-down single-disc Special Editions. Those were really fabulous, especially the Vault Disney 2-discers.

I wonder if the 40th Anniversary Edition of Mary Poppins will emulate their design at all.

I think Disneykid's basically hit the ball with his list for the 2-discers, although I'd have to agree that Rescuers, Oliver & Co., and perhaps even Great Mouse Detective could all very well be SEs in the not too distant future (2006/07?). I personally feel Dumbo would work wonderfully as the SE companion to Bambi PE, and I think we all shouldn't just dismiss it for next year immediately, even though 05's slate is pretty packed as of now.

I wonder if this "Dumbo" special edition was going to be released to promote the infamous sequel (which, thank goodness, was canned). Let's hope we get it by the end of next year

A few of these dvds are really confusing. For example, the Dumbo 60th anniversary edition has only one disc and slightly more than average extras. So do you think they will make a 65th anniversary edition that has a whole seperate disc of extras? And then there is the mysterious Peter Pan "Special Edition" oooooooh....ahhhhhhhhhh JAM-packed with The making of Peter Pan, the Peter Pan story, an audio commentary from Roy, playful dvd storybook, a pirate treasure hunt game, and the grand finale of them all: DVD-ROM WEBLINKS AND "MORE"!!! WOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOO So what's the deal with "Special Edition"? If they enhance this dvd they will only have to enhance all of the other special editions and then make more mon-ohhh. Perhaps there is no end to the dvd editions. I wonder what will be after platinum?

As for more editions, it is really only the collectors that will start rebuying, and we know the score (I have 3 copies of Snow White; 2 of Atlantis; 2 Sleeping Beauties and both versions of Alice in Wonderland, so I can't really say upgrading is all that big a deal to me). However, it does suck that stuff is held back, or we get a lackluster so-called "Special Edition", only to have another version released a few years later. Disney hasn't been TOO bad - I think some DVDs have had 3 editions, but this in rare cases. Anchor Bay seems to release a new version of Halloween (with exclusive features) almost every year (I have 2 editions, with a 3rd on the way).

The labeling is not an issue for me either - Gold, Limited, Platinum, Special Edition, Masterpiece, Collector's Edition - as I get mine from all over the place, and Australia has never really bothered with the labels (in fact, I think the US is the only place that does that). To me, a name is just a name - unless it is misleading. James and the Giant Peach is the lamest excuse for a "Special Edition" I have ever seen. I'd hate to see the standard release!

What does irk me is truth in advertising. As several people have pointed out on this forum, many DVDs are advertised as "For the First Time on Disney DVD", which is clearly not true in the case of Lion King 2 and some others, which were advertised as such.

The other major concern I have with recent editions is the dumbing down of the DVD. Atlantis, TENG, Fantasia, Dinosaur, Snow White and as recently as Sleeping Beauty all had unquestionably good special editions. However, it would seem a 2-Disc special edition for Disney at the moment consists of a "joke" commentary (e.g. Brother Bear, Three Musketeers), with a few outtakes and games; with "meatier" making-ofs on the second disc with a whole lot of "virtual" games. Take the Lion King 2 disc. In Australia and Europe, this was only a single. However, all we missed out on was one music video and a virtual game (no great loss there). All of the meat could fit onto the one bun (as it were). In other words, with the exception of the Platinums, a special edition ain't that special, and isn't really worthy of 2-disc. This is due to a preconceived notion of "what the audience wants".

However, to address Prince Ali's concerns, we are going to have to expect re-releases all the time. It is just a part of business. However, as I have now said, the re-release is not so much the concern, as the lack of substantial extras on a release.

Oh, and everybody knows "The Bones of Small Children Edition" comes after Platinum.

I'm going to have to agree with disneykid's list. To predict which films will be available on two-disc, we must first eliminate the ones that we're pretty sure won't be available. i think it is safe to say that some of the dvds which got relatively good treatment in the Gold Collection shouldn't be expected to receive upgrades:

In addition, I think it is unlikely that most of the package films are rereleased:

Of these two releases, I can see only the two latin-american themed films ever being released.
As far as any other movies go, anything is fair game for a two-disc release. Especially if Disney continues releasing "Masterpiece Editions" in the late winter and "Special Editions" when Platinum discs are released.
