Great news - I'll finally be able to burn myself a "broadcast quality" PAL DVD!

I wonder if it's on Disney UK's DVD release schedule yet?

Sounds like an excuse to bust a tape out now doesn't it ;)

Now for my failing memory, is there anything specific to look out for in case it might be censored etc?

No fair :x Oh well. I already have a copy of Song of the South thanks to a friend that lives in London as well. I don't understand why Disney is allowing other countries to show Song of the South on TV if they discontinued the purchasing of the video in all of the other countries.

That and the fact that Disney is running out of films to release on DVD over here (we already have So Dear to My Heart, but sadly no Make Mine Music) makes me think Song of the South will appear before the end of 2005 in the UK.

I wish this was in the USA I have a good quality copy of this movie but I wish I could get this. Mine is a transfer from the Japaneese LD and it has the subtitles when they sing.

Woohooo! Time to go out and get a new VHS.

Does this surprise anyone else? Surely it won't be shown unedited? Or maybe this is Disney testing the water for a DVD release?

BBC2 is the second BBC network channel in the United Kingdom. It will, as far as I know, be shown unedited. While I wouldn't know if it was edited or not, reportedly last Easter it was shown unedited in a similar time slot. (and the BBC doesn't have adverts either! :))

Disney in the USA Is to Chicken To Release It. NCAAP Blaw. Disney in the USA didn't have the guts to stand up and fight and get this thing released on Video/DVD in the USA.

I don't see what they would edit out, unless they're worried that people will be offended by Bobby Driscoll's lacy collar.

lol. I haven't seen it so I don't know, I was just assuming there might be more, er, potentially offensive scenes.

No, there's nothing offensive in it. Just good ol' Disney family entertainment!

"Zip-a-dee-doo-dah, zip-a-dee-ay,
My, oh, my, what a wonderful day.
Plenty of sunshine headin' my way,
Zip-a-dee-doo-dah, zip-a-dee-ay..."

There really isn't anything you could edit out to make it acceptable. What is considered objectionable is the whole framing story, the portrayal or the master/ servant relationship between blacks and whites. Personally, I think to find this racist is to misunderstand the film; and, as the film suppossendly sanitises the master/ slave relationship, so we will be sanitising the past by cutting it. The only way to make it acceptable to a lot of people would be just to show the shorts, I guess.

Anyway, what I'm really excited about is the fact that it was supposed to have been remastered/ restored a few years ago. I'm hoping the print the Beeb uses will be from this source. I'm trying to get my parents to buy a dvd recorder before next Thursday!

What's the betting there will be a whole load of new SONG OF THE SOUTH DVDs for sale on eBay in a few weeks, all boasting "newly remastered/restored"?

Richer Sounds in the UK (and Europe) are selling standalone DVD recorders for just 139.99 GBP - about the same as what you'd pay for a decent video recorder!
