The complete first season of the sitcom Ellen is coming to DVD on September 24, but it is being released by A&E Television. How can this be since it is a Touchstone Television production that was distributed by Buena Vista, plus it was originaly shown on ABC. Any ideas?

Disney owns about 50% of A&E I believe.

You are indeed right! I got the following information from the 2003 Annual Report:
A&E Television Networks (37.5% owned), Lifetime Entertainment Services (50% owned) and E! Entertainment Television (39.6% owned)
I guess I should have checked it earlier but thanks a lot for your reply!

YAY! I loved Ellen! There are very few sitcoms I'd collect on DVD (Lucy, Golden Girls, Nanny, and Ellen basically), and with Lucy already out, Golden Girls is coming in November, now there's Ellen in September!
Is The Nanny coming to DVD anytime soon?

I hope so, Escapay. I'm very excited about this release. Not too long ago, I was telling a friend "I would definitely buy that on DVD if it was released." Lo and behold, it's on it's way. This is becoming a pattern- I say I want a DVD, and within a week, it gets announced, lol. Oh yeah!

Would you be ever so kind and say "I want complete yearly episodes of
(insert a soap opera, any soap opera, except for Passions) on DVD"???

I'll see what I can do.
I'm wondering why they chose to release this on A&E, though. Was it ever associated with them at all? Perhaps it has to do with controversy? A&E gives it more of an academic spin.

Is this the first season of Ellen or is it These Friends of Mine or whatever it was called.
My recollection is These Friends of Mine was absolutely horrible and they had to totally rework it. If that it was it it, I wouldnt buy it.
Ellen on the other hand was passable.

I checked on tvshowsondvd.com and it's the first season (These Friends of Mine), so it's the one with only Ellen, Adam, and two other characters (one of which was played by Maggie Wheeler). Audrey and Joe were recurring, and there's no Paige
Still, I find Ellen funny as heck, so I'd be willing to buy the first season even if it was Paige-less (love Joely Fisher, along with her show Wild Card).

FINALLY!
Season 3 is scheduled for release in the first quarter of 2006. No date set yet. I was beginning to worry...

Also, in revisiting this thread, I see that Disney owns around half of Lifetime... interesting, then, that the Golden Girls Lifetime Intimate Portrait discs are being released by Warner. Not shocking, but interesting.

Great news! I was worried that was the end of Ellen.
Aaron, to answer your question, "The Intimate Portrait" is a TV series and the series is owned by Warner Brothers.

Ah. For some reason I was thinking Lifetime produced their own stuff, but that makes sense.

How right you are. When this show came to Oxygen, they of course still called it Ellen, I couldn't believe how unentertaining the first episodes were. I almost gave up on the show for good. But thankfully, they started adding better characters in like Paige, Joe, Spence, and Audrey. And tossed out boring characters like Anita, Holly, and Adam.
