This was confirmed after I watched my Season 4 dvd. The writing is funny, complex and layered. You started to care about the characters. And you can watch them again and again and still miss things. Yep quite simply the BEST SHOW EVER!!!!!

I agree that season four is great, one of the best, BUT... If you really think about it, it should have ended a couple years ago, quality and comedy is down on the recent episodes. But I still cant wait for Season 5 in 2006:)

1) Absolutely it should have ended a while ago. Maybe around the end of Season 12.

2) Although an excellent series because of the writing - it is funny to different ages for different reasons(ie the layering DDMAN referred to) it is difficult to call it the best series ever. For instance I don't believe it is anywhere the series MASH was. But if I was to put together a list of my opinion of the best 10 I imagine it might get a spot. It is far and away the best animated series ever.

I agree. I think it is starting to get better, like Frasier was, but is really getting old. Ny now, Homer's just like a very stupid ape. The show doesn't have the same writing and humor it had in Season 4. It's still a very beloved show to pop culture across the globe, but other series are overall better. I wuldn't choose MASH as being better, pehaps Frasier or Seinfeld or Dick Van Dyke Show.

I can see Simpsons going on for another decade or so, it never really gets old. It can change with times easily and humourously, and (un-like so many other tv series both animated and live action) the characters never grow up. One of the most enjoyable things about the Simpsons is how it refers to movies and current events so much(American Idol, Logan's Run, etc.).
I hope that this series doesn't end anytime soon! It's one of my favorites! :)

Well, personally I think Futurama beats the pants off The Simpsons (apart from perhaps Futurama's uneven first season, where they were still working out the characters and what sort of stories they could tell).

I think part of this is Futurama never reached the apex of it's creativity, like the Simpsons has (and for that point how M*A*S*H did when it became "morale of the week" towards the end of its run).

I NEVER found futurama funny at all. It just seemed too forced to me.

The problem with the simpsons now is that episodes try to be too clever. They try to be so wrapped in pop culture that the simpsons almost become supporting characters in episodes designed to be pop culture time capsles.

Having said that, in it's peak the show put out great episode after great episode. Now they are a lot fewer and further between.

Personally I became a fan of Family Guy in syndication, as it reminded me of the way the simpsons were. It'll be interesting to see how the new shows do on adult swim.

A.S. is probably the best "offbeat" programming on tv today.

Me too I think this show is an absolute riot and it's funnier than anything South Park has done in years. I think that show should have ended after the movie was released. Because there was no way they could have topped what they did in the movie.

so slow do those DVDs come!

Oh well, I think I'll wait for the price to go down before getting Season 4

It is definetly a great show and each time I watch it I understand more of the jokes, like the last time I saw the episode where Homer becomes the head of the union was years ago and I didn't get thje Jimmy Hoffa reference, but nw seeing it again I do.

I wouldn't say the best show ever, but it's definitely among the very best. I LOVE The Simpsons!! I don't have Season 4 yet, only because I was torn between DVDs and saving for my WDW trip, and Disney won out (like always0. I'll get it within the next month or two, though.

I agree that the show has become slightly stagnant in the last few years (this most recent season, though, was a big improvement on the previous two). It's just as funny as ever when it comes to pop culture, but it's lost focus on its more endearing aspects- the fact that this is a real family with family issues and real-life situations (aside from pop culture) that can also be family. The realism has fallen to the wayside, and half the show's charm fell to the wayside. I think it's funny enough to stay on with just the half it still retains, though... at least for a while.

It is quite easily my favourite show.

Although the last couple of seasons have been patchy (and the local networks show them butchered, out of order, and whenever they feel like it), there have still been more laughs in the few good episodes that in entire seasons of 'popular' comedies (Everybody Blows Raymond, for example).

As for Futurama beating the pants off it - I'd have to disagree. Admittedly, I have not seen as many Futurama episodes, but from what I have seen, I was never as instantly impressed as I was with the Simpsons.

The Simpsons certainly has a few years of life left in it, but I think there will have to be a point very soon where they just say 'Enough'. Fox does seem to have a problem with letting shows go on too long (X-Files & Buffy are 2 shows that should have finished years before they did. As much as loved both of those shows - and yes, I a a HUGE fan of both - their last few seasons sucked, quite frankly).

However, The Simpsons will always remain my favourite show for it gave me the line:

"Mmmm....64 slices of American cheese...."

Couldn't agree more! I LOVE futurama. I was really choked when it went off the air. It does a great job of satirizing of so many things; sci fi, comercialism, pop culture...it's animation is even interesting to look at. You gotta love Dr Zoidberg too.

Don't get me wrong, I like the Simpsons too, but I guess I'm just bored of it :(

BIG BUMP!

So I decided to use this thread to discuss the below topic. It's from July 5/07. Variety has listed their picks for the 10 best Simpsons episodes ever:

http://www.vanityfair.com/culture/featu ... sons200708

Your thoughts?

I do agree that there are some great episodes on this list (Rosebud, Homer's Enemy, etc.) but also some head-scratchers (The President Wore Pearls, Bart the Murderer, Bart Vs. Austrailia).

My top 20 Simpsons episodes ever (impossible to pick just 10):

20. Marge Gamer (season eighteen)
19. Behind the Laughter (season 11)
18. Homer Alone (season 3)
17.The Dad Who Knew Too Little (season 14)
16. Trilogy of Error (season 12)
15. Viva Ned Flanders (season 10)
14. Two Bad Neighbors (season 7)
13. Bart After Dark (season eight)
12. I Love Lisa (season 4)
11. Homer Loves Flanders (season 5)
10. I'm With Cupid (season 10)
9. $pringfield (Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Legalized Gambling) (season 5)
8. Rosebud (season 5)
7. Homer's Enemy (season eight)
6. Marge Gets a Job (season 4)
5. 22 Short Films About Springfield (season 7)
4. Bart on the Road (season 7)
3. Natural Born Kissers (season 9)
2. Summer of 4 ft. 2 (season 7)
1. The Last Temptation of Homer (season 5)

I'll have to say The Simpsons is one of the best show ever. I have been a fan since season one and haven't stopped watching the show. I agree that the show should have ended a long time ago. But the latest two seasons were very entertaining. I also have to say that Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie are the funniest family on TV. Also I'm planning on seeing The Simpsons: Movie on Friday July 27. I really can't wait for the Spidey- Pig part. LOL

I also think that the Simpsons is one of the best shows ever. Sure, the newer episodes are not as great as they used to be, but the show has yet to let me down. I am really looking forward to the movie coming out in about a week.

For people that don't like the head packaging and still haven't bought Season 6, they are now shipping Season 6 to stores in a non-head box. It looks just like the one you could get from the mail in. I personally haven't found them yet, but I think this release does have a top, unlike the mail in replacement.
