Why is the Silly Sympony short "The Godess of Spring" included on the Region 1 Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs 2-DVD but not on the Region 2 DVD.Except for the short the features are identical on the Region 1 and Region 2 DVD.So why is there no "Godess of Spring" on the Region 2 DVD ?

can't answer the above, but I always found it strange that one of the menus on the Silly Symphonies set features art from the "Goddess of Spring" but the DVDs don't have the actual short.

Hi DD. While on paper it may look like the features are identical apart from the inclusion of the Goddess of Spring, the documentary on disc one on the R2 release is only about half the length of the R1 documentary! (about 20 mins rather than 40 mins!) Also the R1 set retains the original mono soundtrack which is also missing off the R2 set.

The standard answer for issues like this is that the R2 set has less disc space - mainly because PAL pictures have more lines of resolution and therefore take up more space on the disc. But releases like The Lion King have shown that Disney can put most of the content from the R1 release on a R2 disc (The Lion King only misses out on the inconcequential "Making of the Circle of Stars Video", but manages to have a DTS soundtrack, which even the R1 release didn't have).

Being as the documentary had 20mins edited out, I don't think disc space was an issue. I doubt we'll ever know the full reason, but I think the most likely is the short wasn't ready when the R2 discs were mastered (this is the reason the R2 Alien Quadrilogy set is missing a few minor smaller features that are present on the R1 set).

For the same reason that "Playful Pan" is not included on the Region 1 DVD of Peter Pan, or "The Country Cousin" is not on the Region 1 DVD of The Aristocats, or "Wonder Dog" is not on the Region 1 DVD of Fox and the Hound, or "Daddy Duck" is not on the Region 1 DVD of The Rescuers Down Under, among many many others.

They're obviously doing it on purpose, and keeping it interesting.

So then Snow White is the only DVD where it is the other way around, that is "Godess of Spring" is featured on the Region 1 Snow White DVD but is not featured on the Region 2 Snow White DVD ?

It's a mix. Some R1 discs have shorts while R2 don't and vice versa. Some examples are Lady and the Tramp II in the UK only has 1 Pluto short, where as the US gets 2. Pocahontas II in the UK gets no shorts while in the US you get 'Little Hiawatha'. A Goofy Movie in the UK is totally barebones, where as the US gets the Wonderful World of Disney episode plus a Goof Troop episode.

However, Disney seem to have made an attempt to make all their Platinum releases (and international versions) similar - same release date (give or take a week or two) and same contents. I doubt the missing "Goddess of Spring" was the result of individual country's wishes, and was more of a logistical problem.

It's just one of those things.

There are many others, The Little Mermaid II UK does not include Merbabies like the Region 1 DVD, The Goofy Movie UK does not include the Wonderful World of Disney episode of A Goofy Success Story (although it is widescreen and the Region 1 DVD is pan and scan), etc.

Ok,yes I knew about the Goofy Movie Region 2 UK DVD not including A Goofy Success Story,I remember that now when I think of it.I did not however know about Merbabies not being included on the Region 2 UK Little Mermaid II DVD.

I found these nice production drawings for this short and also a model sheet for the title character.
Image Image Image Image Image Image Image Image Image Image Image

It's very interesting how different she looks in the model sheet than in the final short.
