So, Father's Day is on Sunday and I don't perticularly like mine, but there have been some great Disney fathers/father figures and they appear quite often in movies, often in the lack of a mother. What movies can you think of that explore the father/son or father/daughter relashionship?

Off the top of my head, Finding Nemo jumps to mind. But there's also The Lion King, A Goofy Movie and An Extremely Goofy Movie, Aladdin and the King of Thieves, The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Pocahontas, Hercules and Mulan.

Any others?

Cool topic idea! Disney's got a whole bunch they're listing for a Father's Day Movie Showcase, many of which are from the 'other branches' like Touchstone, etc.

• Disney's The Rookie

How The Strongest Main the World fits in, I'm not really sure. A nostalgia factor, I suppose. But Fred MacMurray is quite the dapper Disney dad!

I'd say that "The Journey of Natty Gann" explores the father/daughter relationship well, but the Region 1 DVD is an atrocious pan-and-scan, while in Europe it's 2.35:1 anamorphic.

Remember the Titans, yeah.

And Pirates of the Caribbean to some extent, though the father doesn't show up in it. Funny thing is I saw a Wal-Mart Home Entertainment Department commercial the other day talking about how POTC on DVD is "the perfect gift for father's day." Heh.

Oh, and yeah, Pirates II will continue that theme I'm sure; I still contend and can prove in theroy based on information given in the original movie that Bootstrap Bill is in fact still alive. And naturally also the father/son thing will go on by them bringing in Kieth Richards for Jack's dad.

And VERY bleakly, Monters, Inc. and Toy Story 2, depending on your perspective. In Monsters, it's easy to see Sulley and Mike as substitute "fathers" for Boo while she's in the monster world (though Sulley to a much bigger extent than Mike.) Toy Story 2, especially the When She Loved Me sequence, can sort of (very bleakly, I know) be seen as the child being the toy's father, a person there to love them and for them to comfort and be there for, the reason they exsist. And when that reason is taken away by the kid's maturation...what then?

Oh and Simba's Pride, as well, which kind of goes hand in hand with The Lion King as mentioned in my previous post.

Oh yeah and Holes, too! Can anyone say "No-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great-grandfather!"

Also - on the non-Disney front, for the heck of it, and widening it to also include father figures in addition to real fathers. And...treasure Planet. Yeah, definately TP, with the complicated Jim/Silver relashiosnhip/

Big Fish, Catch Me If You Can, Star Wars series, (especially The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi), Back to the Future Trilogy (especially the original), Minority Report, Mystic River, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Whale Rider, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Shrek 2, Spider-Man, The Mask of Zorro, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Also, extremely briefly, The Alamo (2004.)

"Treasure Planet".

Jungle Book (Cartoon) and The Lion King I know that these were 2 of my dads favorites.

I'd even go so far as to say Old Yeller and Swiss Family Robinson were "Dad's Day" movies.

The former has the lack of a father figure (Fess Parker), which is why the boy develops the relationship with Old Yeller in the first place. When dad returns, he has already made a "mature" decision about the dog - and become the "father" himself in a way. (Or was that too much? I could have said there was an Oedipal thing with this mother too...).

The latter has the "family" unit in the title, so I've included that there.

Shorts include "Father's Day Off" (1953) or any of the 50s shorts with Goofy (or George Geef). That's why the Goofy movie suggestion were the best - couldn't think of a better "father and son" film that A Goofy Movie.

Those are the same ones that My Dad likes to watch on Fathers Day I own all of those on VHS and DVD format and On Fathers Day we usually watch one of those ones.

My all-time favorite is a Wonderful World Of Disney television episode called, "Goofy's Salute To Father". Also there are a few goofy shorts about being a father.

Unless I missed this, I believe that two of the greatest Father's Day flicks in the world have been left out. Those would be MOTH (Man of the House), and J2J (Jungle 2 Jungle).

I remember years ago the Disney Channel always used to play the Bob Crane / Kurt Russell movie "Superdad" for father's day. I never saw it because I always heard it was a piece of crap!

Great idea for a thread! If only Father's Day took place near Christmas, both Santa Clause films would be great.

Poppins is really a father-child story at heart, at least in part (rhyme!)

Renata, those are great ones for FD, as are most of the others posted here. Treasure Planet is particularly heavy on this theme.

I also recall a film starring Bob Sagget... they go camping or something.

It must be said, that its super strange that this episode only got released on CED video disc on home video considering how obscure this video format is,
