Something interesting I thought I would mention...

I work at a Loews Cineplex, and I have noticed that a lot of small chilren have been being scarred by Shrek 2, a lot have left crying, begging to please leave...

hmmm... I don't think I've ever witnessed this from a Disney animated feature....

Very strange...

I've seen that in disney features:

The wolves in Beauty and the Beast (the most crying I've ever seen at a kids movie)
The stamped/Mufasa Killing in Lion King

Those were the two I really remember. I know the witch in Snow White used to scare my mom too. Most kids movies can scare kids.

What baffled me was when I went to sleepy hollow there were some parents that brought their little kids and (shockingly!!!) had to leave fairly quickly

Scarred? For life?! Must be a really intense movie!

I gotta say I have NOT seen the film yet.

However, my In-Law's took Hailey to seei it opening week and she remarked that she did NOT like the "Big Cookie". That might be the part of the film that's getting to the younger kids.

All I can remember now is my little cousin wanting to be taken out of the theater when we were watching "Treasure Planet"... because she was bored. Of course, I wanted to spank her! Just kidding, hehe... But she is not the easiest kid to stand.

I think you must be right. I am sure no kid or adult for that matter has ever cried during Bambi or Dumbo.

I know of a few children who were also scared at that part, but not incredibly scared. Other than the Gingerbread man, I really don't see anything else that could scare children, but you never know...

The Gingerbread man is towards the end of the film, and people were having to leave much sooner than that... And even some of the older children that were not in tears begging to leave, and had to sit through the entire movie, were coming out with weird looks on their faces, as if they'd been tortured but were afraid to say anything, do to their parents ravving about the film...

I'm interested to know exactly which parts are causing kids to get all worked up?

I've watched tons of animated movies, while being elected to keep an eye on groups of children, and there has only been a few instances when any of them got scared/worked up:

1) Some parts of Lion King - Mufasa death, Scar getting eaten by hyenas
2) That ugly little sadist from Toy Story. From a little kid's POV, he's one of the meanest villains in animated history.
3) Various verbal abuse, screaming and fighting in Lilo & Stitch.
4) Wolves, and Beast vs. Gaston fight in Beauty and the Beast.
5) The very start of Monsters Inc., before it's revealed to be a simulation.
6) The Witches in Hercules.

There are probably others, but I remember those scenes as really getting to young children, and when possible (Monsters, Hercules) we now skip past the first few chapters and start the movie after the scary parts.

I'll tell you one thing, kids were screaming at the Demontors in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. I wanted to slap that mother who wouldn't take her five year old out who was pleading to leave

That's so funny that I should see this thread posted - there was one scene where the "Fairy Godmother" lashes out toward the end, I distinctly remember hearing a kid crying nearby in the audience to me ..!! I remember thinking how "this is that kid's Wicked Witch of the West" (until they eventually see the real deal).

How can Shrek 2 scare kids? My friend saw it and said nothing about kids crying. I mean, I EVEN want to see it.

Well maybe it's because kids having been seeing stuff for the last 20 years that is way watered down. Perfect example: Tom and Jerry of the cartoons of the 1940s versus the Television "Tom and Jerry Show" of the mid 70s. Nuff said.

Most of the kids I saw really upset were really little, like under five. It may have even been that they didn't want to sit in one place that long since a couple that left were toddlers; and tantrums are the norm for that age group .

Ok...this bugs me. That blatenly was not a movie for little kids! It really bugs me when parents just assume that something is okay for their kids without researching it at all. I even said to my husband that I expected crying kids leaving that movie, because of the dementors, before we went. It wouldn't have taken much to figure out that a movie that revolved around an escaped murderer coming after Harry may not be the best thing to take your five year old to

During the summer I work at a day camp and the head of the counslors in my section tells a story about how she took her son to see Bambi in the movies, quite a few years ago, and when they went out he hit her, and he asked her why did you take me to see such a movie.

Disney movies also can be a bit hard on young children.

I agree ... I wouldn't be a bit surprised to hear a child 5 or under screaming when Maleficent transforms into a dragon, or when the wicked Queen in Snow White is transformed, or when Lampwick is transformed into a jackass.
