The official NICK toons debut thread.

Whenever I go to an animation board and 90's toons get brought up into discussion the Nick toons get a very mixed response (more than CN or ToonDisney anyway). So I thought I'd start the official Ultimatedisney discussion thread so we can do the same here.

I think that the Nick toons have been/are SOME of the best cartoons on TV. I don't believe most of the current ones are as great as some of the stuff we had in the early 90's (Lets face it Rugrats should never have come back after the first 65 episodes) but a few of the current shows are really great. I particualy like Spongebob, Zim and Fairly Odd Parents.

I do believe though that the Nick toons run of greatness ended with "Hey Arnold!" after that there seemed to be more misses than hits.

What does everyone think?

Well I don't know much about the television toons. But I think the movies have been exceptional. Both Rugrats movies were great and emotional. The Wild Thornberrys Movie is a big hit in our house and as for Rugrats Go Wild!, well, it wasn't a total disaster. I think the creators worked really hard on all four films.

But I don't think much to Spongebob or Jimmy Neutron on TV.

The only Nick Cartoon that I watch regularly is Sponge Bob. I find that show hilarious. The others that I've enjoyed while flipping channels have been Fairly Odd Parents, and Wild Thornberry's. I didn't have nickolodeon until about 2000, and we don't have it anymore:(, but while we did I thought it was a great channel with a lot of originality.

Where they really excelled was in there preshcool programming. Blues Clues, Dora, and Little Bill are all great shows for the toddler crowd.

Apart from the popularity of Spongebob... Rocko's Modern Life and Ren & Stimpy are the 2 obvious pinnacle series to come from Nickelodeon in the 90's and I believe that Count Duckula and Danger Mouse also first broadcast on Nickelodeon in the mid 80's which were also prime...

I've never been much of a fan of their animated t.v. series outside of these shows, though I'll admit to watching Rugrats back in elementary school when it first debuted, but I never followed after the first season or so. That got old pretty fast.

I'm also a very, very big Nick fan. I like to watch Nickelodeon in my free time. My favorite shows to watch are Rugrats, The Wild Thornberrys, All Grown up, SpongeBob SquarePants, Hey! Arnold, Tiny Toons Adventures, and The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius, The Fairly Odd Parents and Danny Phantom. Also Nick at Nite is cool since it has Full House and Cheers hey Nick bring out Alf and Who's the Boss!!!

I totally forgot ren and stimpy was theirs...that was a great cartoon too. It must of been one of the first that wasn't totally aimed at kids on cable. Cousin Sven was by far my favorite episode.

No, but it has the rights to show reruns of Tiny Toons Adventures.
Tiny Toons Adventures reruns were also seen on Cartoon Network for a short time only.

Here's how I see each show individually

Doug, The first ever nick toon. I hear a lot of people say that this show was bland and boring. I think that is slightly unfair. True it didn't go laugh's like the two nick toons that followed it but it had a nice emotional thread that followed through it (Doug and Patty). Not one of my all time favourites but good never-the-less.

Rugrats, One of the all time best TV cartoons. The first few episodes had a shaky start (like Simpsons) but once it got to the second series its was brilliant. I love the way the writers seem to know how a babies mind works and completely change the world to their thinking. Not so much of a fan of the show after the first 65 episodes but there are a still a few gems in the new ones.

The Ren And Stimpy Show, Another of my all time favourites. True the show took a slight dip once John K had left but I don't feel it took a terrible one (Unless you watch the episode "Sammy and Me", what the hell was that?). You've just got to laugh at a show where a cat and a dog go door to door selling rubber nipples.

Rocko's Modern Life, Unlike Ren and Stimpy which adults just seemed to like Rocko had adults as lead character's which is why I think this show had such a broad apply. It did have jokes that kids wouldn't get but not too many to make look like the writer’s were being clever. Everything about this show is great.

Ahhh! Real Monsters, the second show from the Rugrats team. I didn't enjoy this one as much as Rugrats. Some great episode here but I just didn't connect with this one. Probably my least favourite Nick Toon til Angry Beavers.

Hey Arnold!, The show from Matt (Simpsons) Greoning's brother in law. I love this show. Arnold is street smart and a really likably guy. Some of my all time favourite episodes involve the "Urban Legends" and Helga's crush. A winner on all accounts.

Stay tooned for more reviews...

Where would the world be without Spongebob? :D
Spongebob is a great show, one of my all time favorites!

Rugrats is also another great Nick show...but the All-Grown-Up thing has kind of ruined it for me...

My favorite Nick shows include Rugrats, Spongebob, Hey Arnold, and The Fairly Odd Parents. :)

The old Rugrats, before Dil and Kimmy showed up, are really good. Not that I have anything against Dil or Kimmy, but the colors got brighter, the picture got less grainy, and all of a sudden most of it went down the tubes. Even the 'wot wot wot' theme music wasn't as good.
As for other shows that I like:
Doug - I love Doug! The old Doug, especially. I'm feeling very nostalgic today, I guess, but Pork Chop has got to be the coolest cartoon pet either, and QuailMan is the coolest superhero.

Jimmy Neutron - Hilarious! Sheen is the best. It pokes fun at itself a lot, just look at the theme song: "this is the theme song, for Jimmy Neutron". I really didn't like the movie, but the show is awesome.

Fairly Oddparents - another show that never fails to make me laugh, especially the episodes involving the aliens. Has anyone else noticed the recent trend towards stupid male characters, i.e. dads and male fairy godparents?

Hey Arnold - this one has kept up its awesome quality for a while now. Even the newest episode (at least I think it's the newest episode) about him reading his dad's diary was full of all sorts of emotions that are hard to pack into a half-an-hour slot (in the newest one's case, an hour-long slot - it was a special). My favorite episode, hands-down, is the aquarium one.
