Van Helsing TV Spin-Off Not Coming to NBC

Variety reports that Transylvania, the spin-off of Hugh Jackman-starrer Van Helsing, won't be coming to NBC. Nine months ago, the network pacted with Universal Network Television for the drama to be executive produced by the film's writer/director Stephen Sommers. Hopes were high that a pilot would be in this month's upfront lineup and that the series could benefit from a summer's worth of movie promos.
NBC has quietly cooled on Transylvania, however, just a few months after the project was announced, says the trade. Even before the merger with Universal, or a single dollar was tallied at the box office for Van Helsing, executives decided the show was simply too expensive.
The script has technically remained "in development" and there was an outside chance that NBC would have raised the dead if the movie had opened to big box office numbers. The network says that the box office has "no bearing whatsoever on our plans to move forward or not." While it won't likely be seen on NBC, other networks are still said to be interested in the show.
I really hope another network picks up this show.
I wanted to see this one badly!!!
Why didn't NBC want it after all.

I know why they don't want the show.
Why pay money to make a good quality show when you can find regular people willing to humiliate themselves for no money in a crappy Reality series?

Why not find real <strike>victims</strike> people, put them in the real Transylvania with a real Vampire, Werewolf and medically resurrected patchwork cadaver and call it "Blood Brother"?
Seriously, isn't the pro argument for all these media-mergers that the bigger corperations will have more money for programming? Well, apparently not. And the general public gets screwed again as fewer and fewer people decide what the public will watch (which as Maerj says is normally cheap humiliation TV).

It's obvious the horrible reviews and low quality of the Van Helsing movie (I thought the movie was really, really bad) was a definite contributor to this "cancellation". It's tough to sell a TV show based on "worst summer blockbuster!" press and audience exit polls.
I'm sure if the audiences and critics loved it, then it would still be in the lineup.

I had no intentions of seeing the movie with my friend, but when we randomly went, we both loved it, save for the gross factor. I guess it was over-hyped and one of those movies that you just hafta like. Either way, we really enjoyed it and I really hope some other company picks the show up!

there was a reality show on Sci Fi last month called "Mad Mad House" where guests were brought into this haunted looking house but they had to live with a Vampire, a voodoo priestess, a wiccan, a naturalist, and a modern primitive. They got to pick which people would based on the guests' tolerance and acceptance of their hosts. i wished I had time to see the entire series though
this sounds more like a show for FOX but not NBC
