Moana 2 director David Derrick Jr. already talks about the possibility of a third film in the latest issue of Total Film:
It's clear that the crew have really pushed the boat (or canoe) out for this sequel. Originally conceived as a Disney+ series, Derrick Jr. recalls "a groundswell from everyone working on it that it needed to be on the big screen." Their wish has been granted, but their ambitions don't stop there. "There are so many amazing elements to this world than I definitely could see her story continuing," Hand says of a potential third film. "It's not currently planned right now, but I think everyone would love to see more Moana." We'll just have to wait and see he far she'll go.

Not surprising they're already developing another one. If the sequel crosses the billion dollar mark at the global box office, a third one is all but guaranteed. I wonder if in the third one, they'll bring back LMM or if they'll stick with these new songwriters.

Whenever there's a 2, there's always a 3 unless 2 just bombs. I wonder if Moana 2 will do a billion? Definitely possible since the original's done so well in streaming, even though it made 600 million.

Whoa. It`s really remarkable how they are discussing a third movie when the second haven`t been released yet. Especially since Disney has bombed with their features lately. But if that was the case, I would`ve liked that the third one was more of it`s own storyline and not just a rehash of it`s predecessor.
Btw, if Moana 2 is going to be a hit, it would be tempting to label it as Lilo & Stitch of this generation. And that`s how it was the hit among the strings of flops. Since the Revival era followed the synergy of the Renaissance and the post-Revival era has been another string of flops. Sure, Zootopia 2 and Frozen III are most likely to be successes. But since the previous dark era of Disney (the pre-Revival) followed the rut of the another dark era (the 1980`s), we all know that Disney slowly climbed itself to it`s top after some failures (The Black Cauldron and Chicken Little).

Since this one will happen regardless, I just hope WDASs Burank Studio is going to tackle this to give It its proper theatrical treatment ( to avoid the lackluster character designs of Moana 2 and how the Animation looks like from 2016 due to small budget)
It would be interesting if they would Introduce Kanaloa, the God of the Ocean, he could have a great connection to Moana. Since he is also depicted as either an octopus, dolphin or a wave, they could automatically make it seem as if Kanaloa was the ocean all along, would kinda make sense
But if they dont I dont mind the prequel:
"Maui: a Moana story"

maybe it will be the Chicken Little of the Generation. Highest grossing WDAS movie of the 2000s, but mediocre critical acclaim

I don't think it will do worse than Wish

I'm really getting fed up with Disney, once a powerhouse in creative development, pushing the envelope of storytelling, through design, cutting edge animation etc. Now they have become slaves to capitalism... It's becoming quite sad...
It's been ages since I've been genuinely excited about a Disney project, sadly... And it's disheartening that other studios manage to create fresh new projects AND push animation techniques while Disney runs around in circles trying to catch their own tail!

If Bob Iger is happy with the status quo (sequels earning a lot while the originals don't make as much), I wonder if the new CEO down the line will be willing to make more originals.
I wonder how many originals have been pitched and Iger (or someone below him) said Nope!
I like RBtI and Frozen II, I'm sure I'll like the upcoming sequels too, but it does feel weird getting so many sequels when for so long that was not the case.

Q: Is Moana now a demigod or a Tautai?
Jared Bush: Moana is now… a demigod. What that means for the future… we might just find out.

Q: With Moana now officially a Wayfinding Demigoddess, what does this mean for her character moving forward?
Jared Bush: What her new status means moving forward… I think we (and she) will have to see.

Q: With the success of Moana 2 and the end credit scene, could we potentially see a Moana 3 in the future? Also will Moana have a bigger presence in the parks?
Jared Bush: I’d love all of those things!

Q: I've been hearing rumors that that might be planning on a third Moana film, and I'm wondering that will it be made as a regular feature film than a planned miniseries?
Jared Bush: I have nothing to say officially about that, but I do believe that Moana and Maui’s stories deserve to be seen on the biggest screen you can find.

Q: What could we expect from a potential Moana 3?
Jared Bush: Nothing official to talk about yet - we’re still just so thrilled with how audiences are embracing Moana 2… so for now I’ll just say that at the end… Nalo didn’t look very happy.

I never understood the meaning of her magical powers at the end... She was an excellent flawless Wayfinder before and now her superpower became Wayfinding?

No need to be coy about it, this was a huge success. They made that much money off a sequel they didnt even spend their usual budget on. Of course they're gonna do a third.

Even if the sequel only made as much as the first, a third was still set in stone. But it managed to do more than the first just like Frozen 2. Hopefully Zootopia 2 manages the same since I wouldn't mind multiple sequels to that property much. Don't get me wrong, more stories with Moana could have definitely worked since it's mythological, but without M&C, it was hard to hope for much.

Moana 3 was listed as part of the 2026 film slate at CinemaCon, but it was clearly a mix-up with the listing meant for the live-action movie. It caused quite a stir on social media.

I don't understand...they meant to put the live action logo on that slide but somehow a Moana 3 logo appeared...? Obviously we wouldn't get a Moana 3 next year, but they have the logo just waiting...

Maybe I'm wrong but I don't think Disney made that since there are movies from other studios as well. I think the person who made that saw there would be a Moana movie in 2026 and assumed it's Moana 3.
