It is sad that Hollywood has run out of ideas. Enough remakes already. 90% of the time the original is better. Today the actors aren't as versitile, they don't do everything like they used to. Actors used to be musicians, actors, dancers, and singers. Manchurian Candidate, an excelent movie, with a terrible remake. If you haven't seen any of the other Hollywood ones think of Disney. There is possibly one sequal that is somewhat good. Everything has a cheeper quality now, and it ruins the originals. However, the one good thing with remakes and sequals is that the original gets a good DVD release.

Yes, I think we should go back to the "good old days" of studio pictures when Universal had such diverse releases as Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, House of Frankenstein and Curse of Frankenstein

I think things are slightly different today because of the size of most productions. In the "golden age" of studio cinema, stuff was being churned out like a factory - the same mentality applies today, but I think more money is being thrown into it. Plus, you have independent cinema compensating for the deficiencies of the studios. As a result I think films are healthier for the most part.

Further, as I have stressed many times in the sequel/remake debate, a remake CANNOT ruin the original. Do you think people truly think less of Casablanca because it was remade as Barb Wire with Pamela Anderson (it's true!).

Really, I hate the argument that "stuff was better then". No, stuff was different then. If you take the top 10 box office films as being representative of what is being made now, then of course you will have a bad view on what is being released.

Actors were just as typecast then as they are now, perhaps even more so. To use the Universal horror example again (yes, I just bought the box set ), some of those actors never escaped the typecasting of those monster roles.

Really, remakes have always been a reality. From the earliest days of cinema when stage plays were being remade into films; to the transition from silent to talkies when the silent films were remade with sound; the colour age when a film was remade into colour; to the digital age when George Lucas retweaked Star Wars 73 times. EVERY business is going to try and capitalize on their existing properties, and a smart movie studio will do that as well. The trick is to try and make a smart go of it, and not just churn out a mindless (but cool-looking) piece simply because they own the rights to the franchise.

However, if you look to the world of indepedent cinema - which is becoming more interwoven with mainstream cinema - you will see some of the most original ideas out there. Besides of which, Hollywood hasn't run out of ideas - the audience has just run out of imagination. It is the audience who keeps flocking to see this "mindless drivel". If we stopped, do you really think they would continue to remake things? I think not...

I guess I was a little general when I said remake. Some remakes have been very good, though on the whole I think comparitavly they are not as good.

Well I just found out that Angela Lansbury (AND Frank Sinatra!) starred in the original Manchurian candidate. I was really excited for the remake, but now I MUST see the original first. Hopefully Blockbuster has it. That really excites me. Oh, and apparently, she's been ragging the remake.

I personaly love Re-makes as well as sequals. True alot of times the original is better than the rremake or the sequal. But it is still nice to see a new take on the original story whether it be a remake or a continuation of it. In Fact some of the time the remake or the sequal is better than the original. I can't see how any of you can say that the sequal or the remake ruins the original film. If anything it enhances the original that much more. Youy may not enjoy the new film but it in no way takes away from what was originaly there, if you don't like what it adds to it you have the choice not to watch it.

I'm not sure Herbie: Fully Loaded is a remake. It's either a total reboot or a continuation.

I thought that title was an in-joke. They aren't seriously using Herbie: Fully Loaded as the title, are they? The DVD--Herbie: Totally Tricked Out Edition. Fantastic.

I heard the script was a retelling of the original Love Bug. I doubt many people under the age of 15 have any clue what the original is about. Besides, doesn't Lohan only star in direct remakes?

i think the only remake that i like was Rat Race which is a remake of It's A Mad Mad Mad Mad World. if you have never seen any of these movies, you need to watch them. they are hilarious.

I love Rat Race, it's one of my favorite comedies. But then, Whoopi Goldberg is my favorite actress.

Rat Race was probably one of the first movies in which I started to actually have favorite actors and actresses. i learned about the actors and actresses from watching the movie. also Rat Race comes on tonight in the United States on TBS.
