Dream Productions

Meanwhile, Pixar has been asked to increase its output — there's a full-length TV series in the works, Win or Lose; another big-budget series that hasn't been announced but I'm told is based on Inside Out and created by Soul writer Mike Jones.

Not surprised. Inside Out is another one like Toy Story and Winnie the Pooh that they could potentially wring a great deal out of it, if they do it right. That said, more off-putting that they're making a sequel and a TV series and I imagine Hader / Kaling won't be a part of either.

Until last October, the series was still in development. All I heard was the series was about Dream Productions and it would be released around the same time of the movie. But who knows now if it’s coming or not.

Pixar is also releasing a television series based on Inside Out. Dream Productions, set in the Inside Out universe of Riley’s dreams, will air next year. As part of its restructuring, Pixar will see how these shows perform before committing to more titles for the streaming service.

Q: I did see the announcement of an Inside Out Disney+ series. Is that something you can talk about?

Pete Docter: We have finished. It's coming out next spring. I'm not sure that there's been a specific release date, but in the first film, remember we go to Dream Production to see how Riley's dreams are made? It semi-explains why they're so weird. We've continued the exploration of the power of dreams and how they affect us in our waking life, as well. So it's pretty cool.

Actually, this sounds like a really fun concept for a short series. I’m a big fan of Rainbow Unicorn, but maybe not as much as Joy!

Here are also the synopsis and voice cast. It's described as a mockumentary-style series and, apparently, it'll consist of just four episodes. The runtime hasn't been revealed yet. The first episode was screened at D23 during the panel about the production design of Inside Out 2.
From the world of “Inside Out” comes “Dream Productions,” an all-new Disney+ series about the studio inside Riley’s mind where dreams really do come true—every night, on time and on budget, thanks to acclaimed director Paula Persimmon (voice of Paula Pell). Riley’s growing up and her core Emotions are on the job helping her navigate, but now Paula is facing a nightmare of her own: her signature combination of dreams featuring Rainbow Unicorn and copious amounts of glitter just isn’t working anymore. To try and save her career, Paula teams up with Xeni (voice of Richard Ayoade), an overly confident daydream director looking for his next big break. With differing visions on what makes Riley’s dreams successful, can the reluctant pair come together to create the next big tween-dream hit? Written and directed by Mike Jones and produced by Jaclyn Simon, Pixar Animation Studios’ hilarious, mockumentary-style series debuts on Disney+ in 2025.

Cast: Paula Pell (Paula), Richard Ayoade (Xeni), Amy Poehler (Joy), Maya Rudolph (Jean), Alli Maki (Janelle), Kensington Tallman (Riley), Liza Lapira (Disgust), Tony Hale (Fear), Lewis Black (Anger), Phyllis Smith (Sadness)

I agree. The Dream Productions sequence is one of my favorites from Inside Out. I had sometimes thought that some dreams seem like they were written by someone, so I found the idea of a film studio creating the dreams very clever. Plus, it's a hilarious sequence. A full series set in that world could have a lot of potential.

It's interesting that they'll also explore how the dreams affect Riley in her waking life.

Can't wait to see it. I hope the work pays off in this 4-episode limited series.

Also, glad to hear each episode will be 21 minutes long, that should be fun.
