Your LOVELY Movie Viewing Log

I am aware the forum is already blessed with a thread called "What Movie Did You Just Watch?" (I think this is the latest one.)

However, I would prefer if this thread were a little bit more structured, and that those participating make a list of all movies consumed in the preceding month. It can include everything from live action and animated theatrical films, features and shorts, TV and streaming series. If it counts as a movie for you, feel free to include it. :milkbuds:

If you would like to post mini-reviews of the movies you watched, the older thread may be better suited for that. Then again, perhaps all be accomodated in this new one. The old one is, well ... old (and dusty and mouldy.) :P

Feel free to use any desired format. I like a simple, uncluttered list comprising the date I watched it movie, its title, the original release date and the format of choice. Yours can be simpler or more elaborate.

I started keeping this log about four years ago, but I hardly think it would do to clog up the thread with everything I watched since 2019. :P I'll start from January 2023.

02/01/23 Avatar: The Way of Water [2022 | 🎞 Cinema ]
05/01/23 A Christmas Carol [2009 | 💿 Blu-ray]

Alright, I'll bite!

(Using my IMDb's ratings section as a guide for dates, with a mini-review where I felt adding one.)

January 2023:
01/01/2023 - Fall (2022) - streaming
03/01/2023 - Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody (2022) - movie theater
It was fun to watch, but felt more like a slideshow of major moments from Whitney Houston's life, and I could not get over the fact that Naomi Ackie looks NOTHING like her. She acted her heart out of the role, but the lack of resemblance really took me out of the whole experience.

04/01/2023 - Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul. (2022) - streaming
09/01/2023 - The Menu (2022) - streaming
10/01/2023 - M3GAN (2022) - movie theater
14/01/2023 - Warlock (1989) - streaming
14/01/2023 - Warlock II: The Armageddon (1993) - streaming
14/01/2023 - Warlock III: The End of Innocence (1999) - streaming
14/01/2023 - Waxwork (1988) - streaming
15/01/2023 - Waxwork II: Lost in Time (1992) - streaming
15/01/2023 - The Banshees of Inisherin (2022) - streaming
Wow. Just wow. I was completely mesmerized by this film. It stays with you for days.

15/01/2023 - This Boy's Life (1993) - streaming
20/01/2023 - Blankman (1994) - streaming
21/01/2023 - Clue (1985) - streaming
27/01/2023 - Wicked Stepmother (1989) - streaming
This movie felt like a fever dream, too bizarre to just stop watching. Also Bette Davis' last movie which she left in the middle of production -- probably one of the reasons why it's a total (fun to watch) sh!tshow.

28/01/2023 - The Lost City (2022) - streaming
29/01/2023 - She-Devil (1989) - streaming
29/01/2023 - Do the Right Thing (1989) - streaming
30/01/2023 - Shotgun Wedding (2022) - streaming
This was... better than I anticipated it to be.

February 2023:
01/02/2023 - White Men Can't Jump (1992) - streaming
03/02/2023 - You People (2023) - streaming
A total cringe-fest with a very few redeeming scenes

03/02/2023 - Pamela, a Love Story (2023) - streaming
I admit my opinion of Pamela Anderson was based on what I was fed by the media in the 1990s and 2000s: she was a silly, air-headed bimbo actress, even though I enjoyed watching Baywatch. But God, seeing her in this documentary totally redefined and re-evaluated her for me, and I was shocked at how little I knew about "real" Pamela (I mean, as real as any celebrity can be to us ordinary folks). She's super intelligent, eloquent, charismatic and witty, and overall seems like the nicest person ever, albeit with an utterly sh!tty taste in men (but hey, who of us can't relate to that?).

Lu Over the Wall- was pretty good! Got weird a bit (the animation style got weird at times too).

The Bad Guys- I loved this. Super fun, really appealing animation.

You People- hubby wanted to watch it. It was a decent enough romcom.

Frozen II

The Emperor's New Groove

Strange World

Thank you Mooky and Amy for taking part. :) (That's quite an eclectic list, Mooky!)

Afraid my February was rather dry.

04/02/23 Alice in Wonderland [2010 | 💿 Blu-ray]
05/02/23 Mind Your Language [Season 1, Episodes 1-4 | 1977 - 1978 | 📀 DVD]
05/02/23 Friends [Season 1, Episode 1 | 1994 | 🌐 Netflix]
17/02/23 Despicable Me [2010 | 💿 Blu-ray]
27/02/23 Batman Returns [1992 | 💿 Blu-ray]

Here are my mini-reviews of the movies I watched in February. All rating out of five stars.

Alice in Wonderland (2010) ⭐⭐½

New and updated film adaptation of the Lewis Carroll text starts winningly, with wit and style to spare. Unfortunately, once Alice plummets down the rabbit hole, much of the charm and whimsy of the opening act is left behind. In Wonderland, the film becomes a laboured if well-intentioned bore - attempting to force fit the surreal, structureless tale into the mould of cinematic epic, presumably so the audience has something to "ooh" and "aah" at. The concoction doesn't work, and what a shame that is, for the film is not without merit. I was especially impressed by Mia Wasikowska's innocent but outspoken Alice, and Helena Bonham Carter's ruthless Red Queen delights. Conversely, Crispin Glover is ineffectual as the Knave of Hearts. The complex visual effects are admirable in their ambition, but the hodge podge of techniques comes apart at the seams, with the worst offender being the soft greenscreen shots. Worth a look for Tim Burton fans, but certainly not essential viewing.

Despicable Me (2010) ⭐⭐⭐

Serviceable debut animated feature from Illumination Entertainment sees a cool supervillain adopt a trio of orphans, but not without ulterior motives. This generally solid picture is hampered by lapses of logic that could have easily been addressed with minor screenplay tweaks. The subpar animation lacks flexibility and weight, and these sins can be egregious enough to take you out of the movie. Overall, a mildly entertaining film that curiously transfigured into a box office juggernaut.

Batman Returns (1992) ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Bullseye sequel to the original Batman pits the titular character against the disgusting Penguin, and also introduces the captivating Catwoman. The film fires on all cylinders where the previous film sputtered. A robust score, terrific production design and memorable visual effects round out this second Tim Burton production.

I didn’t watch any movies in February.

I did start Survivor Season 44 on CBS and I’m in the midst of the current Ru Paul’s Drag Race on MTV.

I realize I rarely watch movies. Not anything near the amount you guys watch.

As I’ve gotten older and less interested in current Hollywood product, I’ve become more of a news/political junkie.

And of course, I follow 3 American soap operas so that counts for 15 hours per week (not exactly as I ff through ads) of my viewing time.

I was thinking that Hop came first, but I looked it up and you are right- Despicable Me was first!

Jules, you watched just the first episode of Friends and gave up?

I wish I had more free time period, to watch movies or read, but I don't.

Gosh, I don't remember what I watched. I just finished watching Return to Oz a few minutes ago. It's been one of my most favorite movies since I blind bought it back in college. My hubby had never seen the whole thing together, so it was neat seeing his reactions.

I watched The Nice Guys (Ryan Gosling, Cameron Crowe) because hubby was watching it. Had some moments that were fine. Not really my kind of movie but it was okay.

I can't think of other movies I've seen the past few weeks in full (hubby watches some stuff that I'm not interested in so I don't watch those all the way through. (such as An Evening with Beverly Luff Linn- I didn't watch much of it- I thought it was dumb). I watched The Last of Us, The Mandalorian, & Cars on the Road.

I've sort of been zoned out the past 3-4 months. I have a bunch of things backed up to watch--that I *want* to watch--but, IDK... Low energy or something, I seldom seem to get around to anything lately.

I have watched a few films the past few weeks though--I re-watched my old DVD of Kiki's Delivery Service before the Blu-ray version came, and you can really tell the jump in quality that way. I re-watched my Mononoke DVD and plan to watch the Blu-ray soon like with Kiki. :P I watched Ocean Waves for the first time--it and Pom Poko are the only two Ghibli films I hadn't seen before. I really enjoyed OW, I'm surprised that one's never been dubbed now I've seen it; the score is very cute. I plan to go through all the Ghibli films over the next month or two since I finally have them all on Blu-ray after so long, probably at random based on what I'm feeling any particular day.

I need to get ready for work so no time to look it up - was OW a TV movie (I think Ghibli had one?) & that's why OW is hardly discussed?

On Wikipedia, it says it was a TV movie. I had no idea. That explains why it was on the short side as far as length, I guess.

TCM just released their (mostly) full Classic Film Festival schedule!

https://filmfestival.tcm.com/programs/schedule/

I share this because I have a yearly tradition of watching whatever films I own that are a part of the festival at home. I'd like to fly up to Hollywood and experience the real thing at one point, but it won't happen this year. And I probably will have to push my own marathons back a week, since the weekend of the festival is also going to be my sister's wedding.

As for what movies I have lined up, it's going to look like this (although I've recently watched a couple of these recently, so I'll cross out the ones I think that I'll skip)

Thursday:
Rio Bravo
Shadow of a Doubt

Friday:
King Kong
Ocean's Eleven (2001)
12 Angry Men

Saturday:
The Muppets Take Manhattan
Amadeus
The African Queen
The Treasure of the Sierra Madre
The Exorcist

Sunday:
The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956)
The Red Shoes
Casablanca

Babylon - movie theater. It was a very interesting experience, very different from what I've expected it to be, but very well made, and Margot Robbie was definitely the highlight.

Titanic - movie theater. The remastered 25th Anniversary print. I had seen the 3D reissue in 2012, but I experienced this one on an IMAX screen, and it was amazing. The image was great, but the sound blew my mind, especially during the second half of the movie. One of the moments that struck a cord was during the scene where Rose runs through the corridors, looking for Jack. At one point, the light turns off, and we hear the ship's groans as it sinks. It was chilling to hear on a regular screen at home, but in an IMAX theater, with that immersive experince, it was much, much more intense and scary, frankly.

Free Guy - Disney+. I love Ryan Reynolds, and even though he basically plays each one of his roles the same way, he's one of my favorite actors.

Death Becomes Her - Blu-ray. One of my favorite movies ever, it always makes me laugh. I love the special effects, they hold up very well, especially for a movie made in 1992.

The Shallows - Blu-ray. Even though Jaws is my go-to shark movie, this one is pretty great too. I love the visual effects, and the story.

Psycho - Blu-ray. A masterpiece, can't never get tired of this one. Anthony Hopkins at his best.

Gone with the Wind - TV Showing. I managed to see the last hour and a half, this one is my favorite movie ever. The last half hour, in my opinion, is an emotional roller coaster. There is so much happening, and as soon as you get over an event, something even worse happens.

October 2023:

Friday the 13th 2009 AMC
I had never seen this reboot. I’m sure it was heavily edited for airing on AMC.

The Birds 1963 theater
My boyfriend and I love this film. We had to see it for the first time on the big screen for its 60th Anniversary.

The book is also among my favorites, but I can't choose between GWTW, Les Misérables, Pride and Prejudice and Eugénie Grandet. I love them all very much. But the movie is definitely my favorite.
