I recall reading about this one on Leonard Maltin's site. I immediately knew it's a movie I would like to watch.

It's a wonderful movie with several great performances. I'm not familiar with the book it's adapted from, but I read that the author gave the movie her blessing. There's a certain timeless quality to it: it's set in the '70s and feels like it could have come out in the '90s (it's a nice thematic companion to movies like My Girl and Now and Then), a simple coming-of-age movie that discusses important topics without coating them in modern gender politics. I hope you enjoy it when you see it.

And thank you!

In the last couple of months, I've seen both Casablanca and Gone with the Wind on the big screen, which was amazing. A theater in my town has organized anniversary screenings for both movies. Both performances were sold out. The same theater will screen Singin' in the Rain in January, and I'm looking forward to that.

I also saw the new Wonka in IMAX, which was a pleasant surprise, after a pretty crappy year for movies. It's been such a long time since songs from a movie musical have been stuck in my head. In November, I saw Napoleon, which, to me, was a huge disappointment. I went in with very high expectations, but it turned out to be pretty bad.

I went out to see The Color Purple (2023) last night. I had never seen the original film so I watched it on Max the night prior. That may have been a mistake because The Color Purple (1985) was vastly superior in just about every way to the 2023 film. I will say, my friend went in blind and she really enjoyed it.

Had the same experience, only in reverse. Watched the musical version on Tuesday, then re-watched the original on Wednesday, and it just amplified how great the original still is. But I did like the new version too, it's good in its own right, with very strong performances, it's only sin is that some major powerful moments were lost in re-adapting it. And I know Steven Spielberg had his regrets about the queer storyline being mostly omitted from the original, but the new version didn't really do much with it either. It's more overt now, but it seemed more like a checkbox they needed to tick rather than an actual subplot they wanted to explore. Anyway, to me, the whole situation is quite similar to the new Little Mermaid; the new Color Purple is perfectly fine as a movie, it's just that it pales in comparison to the original.

December 2023 (continued):
23-Dec-2023: May December (2023)

31-Dec-2023: Genie (2023)
31-Dec-2023: After Midnight (1989)
31-Dec-2023: Tales of Terror (1962)

Oh, and Happy New Year, UD! Wishing you all many more wonderful (Disney) movies, moments and memories!

My assessment of the new The Color Purple might sound too harsh. A year ago we watched Babylon at the same theater and that is a much more uneven movie. After posting here I found myself listening to the movie soundtrack for The Color Purple and actually enjoyed many of the songs better removed from the movie’s context (I have never listened to the Broadway OBC or subsequent casts). I think, like you said Mooky, some moments were much more powerfully dramatized in the original film. The performances across the board were great, but you wish Danielle Brooks and Halle Bailey had the same scenes to chew that the original actors had.

I also watched May December on Netflix recently. This is a movie inspired by the story of Mary Kay Letourneau. Natalie Portman, Julianne Moore, and Charles Melton who I’ve never seen before but held his own. I’m always interested in ripped from the headlines movies (Game Change which stars Julianne Moore as Sarah Palin is something of a guilty pleasure, too). Great performances.

Oh, that's a great way to put it. The whole cast did a great job but the script kind of undercut them. Some lines were inexplicably cut (like Shug's first line to Celie; maybe they wanted to make her more likeable?), and as a result certain scenes (like the Thanksgiving one) just don't carry the same weight or are as impactful as the original ones.

I watched Saltburn last night partly because Luke’s review on this website was so positive. I loved it and I haven’t been able to get it out of my mind. I thought it was such an interesting choice to film in Academy ratio— I assume because of all the close-ups. Usually I feel like movies that film in full screen are aiming to replicate a certain era of film like The Grand Budapest Hotel and The Artist, but Saltburn felt like the story necessitated a closer and more intimate aspect ratio.

The first thing I wanted to do was to see if it was on Blu ray, but it isn’t. I think Amazon has a better track of issuing physical releases than say, Apple TV, but that’s just something I hate about the streaming era. If I really love a movie like Saltburn, my first instinct is that I want to add it to my physical collection. Streaming feels so disposable to me! I hate it.

Yep! A prematurely canceled two-season TV show. The first season has some ties to the original novel/film, while the second one is an original story. The second season is also much better and it's interesting to think where the show could have gone had it not been canceled. Thankfully, no major cliffhangers were left unresolved so the show can still be enjoyed as it is.

Is this the TV series?
Oh, awesome. I just finished reading the original novel. I read the 40th Anniversary version, which has some new stuff in it, if I understood correctly. I'll also watch the movie, and then the TV series as well. Thanks for your input, Mooky. :)

You're welcome! :) I wanted to read the book as well, as I've heard it's even scarier and more disturbing than the movie. It will have to wait because my reading list is super backlogged.

Never seen the movie so far. But the book itself is pretty disturbing and graphic, too.  I'll tell you what I thought about the movie after I've seen it.

I first saw The Exorcist when I was 14.
I realize now I was too young... I had nightmares for months afterwards....
