“Winnie the Pooh – The New Musical Adaptation” Coming to New York in October 2021

Color me intrigued!! Will it be people in costumes? Puppets? And in case you don't know what Theatre Row is: "Theatre Row is an entertainment district of Off Broadway theatres on 42nd Street in Midtown Manhattan west of Ninth Avenue.". So this will be Off-Broadway.

Winnie the Pooh seems like an odd choice for a stage adaptation, even for an Off-Broadway stint. They must have included the unusually long subtitle "the new musical stage adaptation" to differentiate it from the Disney Live! Winnie the Pooh production during 2004/2005. They are only including the songs from the original film as well as songs by A. A. Milne. Ironically, the trailer for the production features the theme from The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh. It's a shame they didn't hire Richard Sherman to write a couple of new songs for the production. By the way, Amy, they are using life-sized puppets, not people in costumes.

Winnie the Pooh, Christopher Robin, Piglet, Eeyore, Kanga, Roo, Rabbit, Owl, and—of course—Tigger, too, will come to life on stage through stunning life-size puppetry. The beautifully-crafted musical stage adaptation will feature the Sherman Brothers’ classic Grammy Award-winning music with additional songs by A.A. Milne.

THANK YOU! I watched the trailer on my phone when I posted this (it was linked in the WDWNT article) but I didn't know if that was indicative of the style of the show, I guess... I am getting Christopher Robin vibes from this (only happier!) with the look of the puppets, from what we can see in the trailer, so I am so on board.

(Clicking on the link that I posted, it literally says "life-size puppetry" in the first paragraph...I was reading it in bed while trying to fall asleep; I did not pay attention!)

I can't figure this out. Can't figure out the audience they are hoping for, what they are trying to achieve, anything. It's such a non-obvious idea. As soon as I read about it my mind wandered into You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown, but the puppets hindered that. Hopefully it finds its way to Disney+ someday

At first I figured it was just staged for future licensing— I can imagine a Winnie the Pooh show being very popular in schools, community theatres, regional theatres, children’s theatres… But have any puppet-heavy shows been especially successful in licensing? I know Avenue Q made its way to lots of professional regional theatres, but what about amateur theatres?

CORBIN!!!!!!! I'm so glad that he's still working with Disney!! It's a lovely version!!!! I really want to see this show- the puppets are adorable.

Call it silly, but I started bouncing in my seat as I listened to the song. Brings back good memories of watching The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh as a little tyke.

Pooh Bear is perhaps the greatest character ever made and deserves to be President of every country. I would vote for him!

My dream is to become his agent.

I had a friend ask me if this would be "Avenue Q"-style, so these pictures show pretty much that, with the puppeteers visible. This show is just the cutest.
