This is a great choice for a live TV musical. I have missed these, even if the final results were often a little wonky... Curious to see who will be Miss Hannigan and Daddy Warbucks.

I also think that this is a great choice!! I hope this one goes to DVD; I know that Rent Live was a unique case, with the performance being not fully live due to injury, but I didn't get to see it since it never came to disc.

I just want to tell you
Amy, I saw Rent "Live!", and in my opinion, you didn't miss anything.

I saw the commercials for this and just laughed. Another red-haired character down for the count. I guess red-haired people won't exist in cinema anymore.*

I'll watch this for Tituss Burgess. I can see Hensen being a fun Miss Hannigan.
* When I think of
Annie in general these days, the first thing that comes to mind is the South Park episode where gingers take over the country. There's one scene where ginger activists are protesting a non-ginger White girl playing Annie, one of the few roles that are theirs, and they maul her when she comes out of the theater.

It's more the execution that was funny.

The character was already race-switched for the 2014 remake. It seems that once a character is race or gender-flipped, the change is there to stay for future adaptations.

I believe the reason Annie's race was changed in the 2014 film (aside from Will Smith producing and originally intending his daughter to play the role) is because when Harold Gray created the comic strip, he made her a red head due to the anti-Irish discrimination going on at the time. Discrimination against the Irish isn't as prevalent nowadays, but racism towards black people is sadly still widespread.
Even though this new musical production goes back to the Great Depression setting, as opposed to moving the story to present day, it does make sense to keep her black. It still honours Harold Gray's original intention with the character by making her part of a discriminated group.
I actually think Gray would be far more offended by the musical's pro-Roosevelt stance, as he hated Roosevelt and often included negative opinions towards his policies in the comics.

If we're talking about historical parallels, the type of discrimination faced by the Irish immigrants of yesteryear is more similar to the one Latinos face today. I think the reason this and most characters that get race-bend are turned into Black ones is because the Black community is more powerful and influential in Hollywood and in the entertainment industry at large than other marginalized groups such as Latinos, Asians, Indigenous etc.

I didn't know--more likely forgot--HCJ and Scherzinger were going to be in this. Ugh. Same with Hilty, but I was
happy to see her.

It was alright, worth seeing. That's all I got.

The only live shows I’ve seen are Hairspray, Grease and Sound of Music. The other titles didn’t interest me because of either the material or the casting.

I watched this a week or two ago with my mom. I enjoyed it. Taraji was great, as expected. Everyone did a great job!
