This thread is dedicated to the potential stage adaptation of Tangled. Not to be confused with the Disney Cruise version. Menken and Slater gave hints that this will eventually happen.
Alan Menken wrote:What a blessing Tangled has been. And there’s more to come...stage? Live-action? Stay tuned!!

Q: If you adapted Tangled into a full-length musical, are there any moments you'd like to musicalize, that you haven’t yet done for the film or cruise version?

Glenn Slater: I'm gonna save this answer – don't want to spoil anything. :)

I'm sure a Rapunzel stage adaptation will happen eventually. Maybe they'll actually call it Rapunzel, too, since they've learned from the TV series that "Tangled" is not a memorable brand name, whereas everyone knows Rapunzel.

I expect there will be a Moana musical eventually, too. It's a shame Mulan and TP&TF will likely never get them, considering Hunchback got one and now it looks like Hercules may get one as well. I mean, Pocahontas deserved one, too, but Disney is probably walking a tightrope with that property in this day and age. Unfortunately a TP&TF musical would mean bringing Newman back. I'd rather they got Menken to create any additional songs for a hypothetical musical; I still hope maybe he'll make music for Tiana or the Wrecked Princess series so eventually Tiana will have the Menken song she deserves and was denied by Lasseter.

Workshops of the musical adaptation of Smash, which is holding performances in front of recruited audiences, are currently still scheduled to go forward later this week. However, if a strike were to be called, this could be impacted, as could upcoming developmental work, including Take the Lead, The Lost Boys and Tangled.

BroadwayWorld can confirm that Disney Theatrical Group is indeed exploring a stage version of the 2010 animated film. Whether the show will eventually land on Broadway remains to be seen, as Disney Theatrical often makes titles available strictly for professional licensing and schools, and future plans for the adaptation have not yet been announced.

It sounds as though a fully-staged Tangled musical is on its way. According to Menken, “we’re already talking about it for the stage”, clarifying that, currently, “there’s a version that’s done on the Disney cruise line”. Reading between the lines, it sounds as though this new version would be different to that one-hour nautical version.

He also confirmed reports from last year that he’s working on a stage musical of Tangled, but caveats it with there are “no firm plans except completing a version for licensing”. Adding: “No one should speculate on anything beyond that.”

He also revealed that stage adaptation plans for the show were underway—news that sparked excitement throughout the audience.

Would they just make the Cruise Line show longer? I wonder how they'll change the new show. The Aladdin Broadway show added some deleted songs, while the Cruise Line/theme park show I think is shorter but added a song for Jasmine. The B&tB theme park show I've seen a bunch of times and it's definitely shorter with less production value than the Broadway show (I don't mean that in a mean way- it's still a very enjoyable show, but the enchanted objects are in costumes without facial movement, vs Broadway has actual humanoid costumes...it's early, I can't think how to word it!
