Press Release wrote:Set in a vibrant city pulsating with rhythm and movement, an elderly man and his young-at-heart wife rekindle their youthful passion for life and each other on one magical night. The years fade away as the joy of dancing propels them across the exciting cityscape of their youth and revives fond memories and ambitions. Us Again is told entirely without dialogue and set to an original funk and soul musical score reminiscent of the mid-60s.

WDAS President Clark Spencer commented, “We’re thrilled to be premiering our first new theatrical short in five years, Us Again, exclusively on the big screen alongside our incredible new feature, Raya and the Last Dragon. Zach has tapped into elements from his personal life, and collaborated with the very best in the world of dance and music to create this very special film. We are so proud of what they have accomplished and look forward to sharing it with movie theater goers in March, and then in June on Disney+.”

Entertainment Weekly wrote:Written and directed by Big Hero 6's head of animation, Zach Parrish, Us Again tells the story of an elderly man named Art and his young-at-heart wife Dot who rekindle their zest for life through dance one magical night. The short has no dialogue and is told entirely through dance and a funk- and soul-infused score, composed by Captain Marvel's Pinar Toprak. Parrish also closely collaborated with dancers Keone and Mari Madrid, a real-life married couple who have performed on World of Dance and worked with artists like Justin Bieber and Billie Eilish.

For a roughly six-minute short, Us Again still packs in details viewers might not notice until a second viewing. For instance, the subtle decor in Art and Dot's apartment came out of discussions with Disney's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion group about how the characters' backgrounds would influence their surroundings and mannerisms. "We really tried to spread that through their apartment to feel as authentically big city as possible through referencing New York and Chicago a lot, but also how to make it authentic to an African American woman and a Japanese American man," Parrish adds.

Us Again is also produced by Brad Simonsen (Big Hero 6, Zootopia, Ralph Breaks the Internet) and executive produced by Jennifer Lee, chief creative officer for Walt Disney Animation Studios.

Ryan Green wrote:I'm delighted to finally announce "Us Again," the short film that will be screened in front of "Raya and the Last Dragon." As the film's story lead, I had the unique experience of collaborating with director Zach Parrish to shape a story that would later be translated into choreography by Keone and Mari Madrid. It was an awesome experience and I hope you enjoy.

Pinar Toprak wrote:I’m so excited to finally announce this first look image of Disney Animation's “Us Again” that I’ve had the honor and absolute joy of scoring! There is no dialogue in the film and it’s told all through dance and music. I can’t say more than that but I can tell you it’s so beautiful and full of heart in every way. We have all poured our hearts and souls into it (and in my case also some funk and soul).⁣⁣

Keone Madrid wrote:Since 2019 we’ve been working on an animated short film with Disney, told entirely through dance/music (can’t believe I get to type that). And on March 5th, “Us Again” will play in theaters before Raya and the Last Dragon (wherever theaters are open). It will later go to Disney+ in June. There are so many levels to which my heart explodes with joy when thinking about this coming to life, particularly that we can watch our daughter watch this - and that watching the shorts before Disney films have always been something I’ve deeply cherished - but this film and the village of people who helped bring it to life, are so special. Thank you Zach, Brad and the team for believing in us.

Mariel Madrid wrote:We've been very quiet bees about this absolute dream of a project that we got to be part of. "Us Again" a short film by Disney Animation, featuring choreography by Keone and I, will be in theaters (that are open) March 5th coupled with their newest animated feature Raya and the Last Dragon. And yes, it will also be available on Disney+ in June. We are ecstatic to be finally be able to talk about it, and even more so for the world to see this beautiful piece. Thank you Zach Parrish & Brad Simonsen for bringing us into this world, story, process, and for just one of the best jobs ever. This has been in the works since 2019 and I am still pinching myself.

Disney's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion group
whats this? Was this formed after the Lasseter scandal? do they supervise the live action films too?

I believe it was formed near the end of his reign.

Sanjay's Super Team ( 2015 ) was their first effort from this if memory serves. I could be wrong though.

So, Us Again finally turned out to be a WDAS short. I'm glad there'll be a new short in front of Raya and even more glad that the studio hasn't stopped making theatrical shorts. The ones from the Short Circuit program are not bad, but they're very short. I quite liked Puddles, the Short Circuit short from the same director, so I'm glad he has been given another opportunity to direct. The synopsis sounds interesting and I like that the main characters will be black. Also, it's interesting that it'll be exclusive to theaters (at least for now). It seemed Disney was treating the premier access release the same as the theatrical one, but now it's clear they're favoring the latter.

^ I think a dance-centric short sounds great, and I like the look of that pic.

One of the articles that Sotiris posted says that the man is Japanese-American:
but also how to make it authentic to an African American woman and a Japanese American man," Parrish adds.
I love the diversity and love that it's based on a real couple. I am worried about the backlash that there needs to be an African-American woman paired with an African-American man, after Naveen and this character... I'm happy with this, but I do hope we get that as well. This is based on a real couple, so hopefully people understand that and don't freak out too much...

so they're a group of fellow animators/artists? I couldn't really find anything about them on Google just general articles about Disney's commitment to diversity.

I think their commitment to diversity and inclusion is great but I worry about them making it a priority over good stories/storytelling. I think that's partly what messed up Frozen 2 so much.

I loved Sanjay's Super Team. This short looks cute too.

Oh, you're right! I read that article, but I must have misread that part. Probably because they both looked African American to me in the picture. Anyway, what I actually meant is that I'm glad to see some diversity in their shorts.

Are you referring to the director's grandparents, who inspired the story, or to the couple who choreographed the short?

^ The grandparents.

^ Oh, OK. I thought you were saying people shouldn't have a problem with the man not being black on this occasion because the real couple the story is based on were of the same races, and I doubt the director's grandfather and grandmother are Japanese American and African American respectively. That's why I thought you were perhaps referring to the couple of choreographers instead. But you weren't saying that, right? Or are his grandparents really of those ethnicities?

^ OK. I didn't understand that from the article, but maybe they are. Even though he doesn't look of African or Japanese descent, I guess it's not impossible. I suppose we'll find out when more interviews come out. I've seen on his Instagram account that his wife is of Japanese descent and also works at Disney, so maybe he has taken inspiration from that side of the family as well. After all, even though the couple in the short is named after his paternal grandparents, according to the article he has taken inspiration from several places: his own life, his maternal grandparents, etc.

Wasn't a big fan of RAYA, but I'm absolutely over the moon for US AGAIN, the lovely short that will play before it in theaters. It's like the epilogue that Carl and Ellie from UP never got to have. Just really lovely stuff.

There's so much packed into those 6 minutes about love and aging and reclaiming and rekindling your passions. And Pinar Toprak's music is (fire emoji)

Raya & The Last Dragon looks decent to me but I’am even more hopeful that I’ll like this. It seems touching and gorgeously animated.

I forgot to comment on this. Thanks for posting! I really liked the short's music.

I also forgot to post the press conference I found a while ago. In it the director reveals the reason they wanted to have an interracial couple as protagonists is partly that he's in an interracial relationship himself.
