Personally, I'm not too familiar with Rihanna's music. I know the song "Umbrella" is by her and I've also listened to "Shut Up And Drive" because it was featured in Wreck-It Ralph. I guess both are OK, but it's not exactly the type of music I'm usually into. However, I quite liked the song she did for the last Star Trek film, "Sledgehammer". I hope this one is more like the latter. I think it probably will, judging by the theme. Apparently, it's her first solo song in 6 years, so I guess there must be a lot of anticipation for it. More than one critic praised it in the first reactions for the film, which had its premiere yesterday.

It's interesting that Diane Warren could be nominated again after just receiving her Honorary Oscar. Though I like it, I don't know if "Applause" is good enough for a nomination. However, I've listened to most of the favorites and this doesn't seem to be a very competitive year for the category, so who knows. There are still songs that haven't been released, though, like the one from the Avatar sequel. Next week, when the Golden Globe and Critics' Choice nominations are announced, we'll get a better idea of what songs are the favorites for the Oscars. And the following week, the Oscar shortlists will be revealed.

I think she will be. Though it seems people have stopped judging the quality of her work and just vote for her out of admiration and/or pity. I don't find this 'automatic nomination for anything' a positive development, to be honest. It reminds me how the Academy keeps nominating John Williams because of his status and his position in the industry despite the scores for his last few movies being unremarkable, repetitive, and bland. I hope when she finally wins, it's for a really good song that showcases her talent and not something run-of-the-mill because voters just wanted to get it over with.

It's OK, but nothing special. I thought the same about her last nominated song "Somehow You Do".

Yeah, there's not a lot of worthy candidates this year. Some of songs the Academy has been nominating the last few years have been quite the head-scratchers. It's kind of sad because the songs they used to nominate in the '80s, '90s, and early '00s were really strong and memorable.

Thanks for sharing! Disney has quite a few contenders this year, mainly "Lift Me Up", "Nobody Like U", and "The Songcord".

Yeah, since she has been nominated so many times but hasn't won, I guess people want her to finally get the Oscar. I wonder if the fact that people know who she is now and there aren't that many well-known songwriters also helps. Personally, as far as I remember, I've found all of her songs worthy of the nomination so far, so I don't have a problem with it for now.

Regarding "Applause", I've seen it has already been nominated for some awards, and its feminist message could work in its favor, so I think you might be right it'll be nominated.

I had the same opinion on "Somehow You Do" at first, but it grew on me and ended up being one of my favorites of the year, so maybe this one will too, but right now I agree with you.

That's true. I thought this wasn't a very strong year for Disney since there weren't any musicals, but it seems it is after all.

Mine too although that's not saying much. The leading contenders this year are pretty weak.

I'm glad the full list of submitted songs has been released. I think last year we didn't get to know which titles were on it and which ones weren't, right? The submitted songs by Disney match the ones promoted on their website this time. I thought they would maybe end up submitting just one Avatar song, but they actually submitted both. Several films entered more than one, like Spirited, Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile, or Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, which is interesting.

I haven't listened to all of the songs on that list, but a couple of them I liked are "Captain Crow" from The Sea Beast and "Til You're Home" from A Man Called Otto. I don't think the former has any chances, but I found it quite catchy. It's from the composers of the Legally Blonde Broadway musical. It's weird they were hired to write just this one song. I know The Sea Beast is not a musical, but they could've written at least an end credit song as well, which could've been a stronger contender. As for "Til You're Home", it's a simple song, but it's quite nice and I would like Rita Wilson to get nominated someday. I've heard some of her previous contenders in the category and I think she's talented. It seems this time she's made a bigger effort to get in since it's a bigger film than usual, one starring his husband, and she performs the song with Sebastián Yatra, who performed "Dos Oruguitas" in Encanto and is apparently a rising star. I think she'll probably need a stronger song, though.

Regarding "Vegas", that song looked like a strong contender. At least I saw in one of your previous posts you keep updating that it has been nominated for several awards. I'm not surprised it was disqualified, though, since it uses a sample from Elvis' famous song "Hound Dog". I didn't even expect it would be submitted at first.

My husband won't stop singing and whistling this song! At least it was my favorite in the film. Is it common for so many pop artists to be nominated (this year, Taylor, Gaga, + Rihanna)?

Yes, it's very common for the Golden Globes. They love to nominated big celebrities, especially in this category. Yeah, that Pinocchio song is not bad. It was my favorite from the film too.

To be honest, I've never been fond of sea shanties. I don't even like Fathoms Below or The Virginia Company that much.

The vocals are solid and the melody's pleasant, but overall the song is not very memorable. I agree that a stronger piece is needed to stand out.

What a horrible song. At same point, it just turned into noise. Talk about a disappointing year for the category.

The songs from Avatar: The Way of Water and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish are finally available to listen. Both Avatar songs were submitted for the Oscar, but only "Fearless Hero" and "La Vida Es Una" from Puss in Boots. After listening to the songs from both films, though, I don't think any of them is likely to be nominated for the Oscar.

Avatar: The Way of Water
Nothing Is Lost (You Give Me Strength) – The Weeknd
The Songcord – Zoe Saldaña

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish
La Vida Es Una – KAROL G
Por Que te Vas – Gaby Moreno
Fearless Hero – Antonio Banderas & Heitor Pereira
Fearless Hero (Hero Version) – Antonio Banderas & Heitor Pereira

When I heard the song in the film, it didn't stand out too much for me, though I guess it was a shortened version. However, when I later listened to it on its own, I really liked it. I even listened to the full Legally Blond cast recording after that since I was curious to hear more from the same composers. Unfortunately, I didn't like their work there too much. The only song from it I found a bit catchy and I still remember is one titled "Omigod You Guys".

Maybe people like it because it's rhythmic or different, but yes, the fact that this song is among the top contenders proves that this is not a very strong year.

Do you think Disenchanted could've had a chance if Disney had made the film eligible? I know its songs got mixed reactions from critics, but since it's not a very competitive year, maybe one of them could've been nominated. Although, perhaps it'll be more likely to do so at the Emmys.

Wow, I hadn't realized a Diane Warren song had been shortlisted so many years in a row. Pasek & Paul are doing quite well at awards too. I'm happy for Diane. As for "Good Afternoon", that's the only song from Spirited that stood out a bit to me when I watched the film, so I'm glad it was the one selected. It reminds me a bit of "A Cover Is Not the Book" from Mary Poppins Returns, but perhaps it's just that it's inspired in the same music style. I'm also pleasantly surprised "Til You're Home" from A Man Called Otto got in. I didn't think it would. If I'm not mistaken, this is the first time Rita Wilson makes the shortlist with one of her songs.

I forgot to say that I was surprised "Nobody Like U" from Turning Red didn't even make the shortlist. Three of the six songs Disney submitted got in, though, so I guess they're happy with the results. Plus, Billie Eilish and Finneas already won last year.

The Golden Globe award for Best Song went to "Naatu Naatu" from the Bollywood film RRR, while Babylon won Best Score. One award Disney has gotten so far, by the way, is Best Supporting Actress for Angela Bassett in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Here's how many votes it takes to get an Oscar nomination in the Song/Score categories.
The Music Branch contains 388 voting members. The 147 eligible scores and 81 eligible songs went through an initial round of voting that narrowed the contenders to two shortlists of 15. In the nomination round of voting, assuming everybody votes, the magic number to land a nomination will be 65.
