Re: Oscar for Best Original Song 2020

It seems like "Inside Your Heart" is the song from Vivo that will be submitted to the Oscars. Well, or at least the one that will be promoted as the most likely contender from the film.

^I guess you're right. Well, if they plan to submit just one song, I think it's probably the right choice because it seems it'll be the most important song story-wise and will play at an emotional point in the movie. It's a nice song; I think it has chances of being nominated, but I suspect Lin-Manuel Miranda has probably saved his best compositions for Encanto.

The full soundtrack for Vivo has been released. You can listen to it here. There are also sing along versions of some of the songs in this playlist. There are a total of 10 original songs in the film. Some are better than others, of course, but in my opinion Lin-Manuel Miranda did quite a good job in general.

I've watched the film and I liked it too, though I think some elements could've been better. The premise is quite original, the characters are likeable and some scenes are quite emotional, but it has a typical buddy road trip, some scenes feel like filler and there are events I didn't find too believable. The reviews are quite good, though, so I wouldn't rule out a possible nomination for the film itself in the best animated feature category if the year ends up not being too competitive, but I don't think it'll be a strong contender.

I wonder if the people who vote for these awards have seen Encanto or not. Maybe they haven't, but a song from Sing 2 is nominated and that film hasn't been released either. No songs from Vivo made it either, but it seems it's not that they don't like Lin-Manuel Miranda as the end credits song from In the Heights is in the Outstanding Song category.

I'm glad to see "Somehow You Do" by Diane Warren in there. She has another song nominated as well, in the documentary category, "Never Gonna Tame You" from The Mustangs: America's Wild Horses.

Me too. "Never Gonna Tame You" is the better song of the two (although I could have done without the "scream" near the end). I hope she gets nominated for an Oscar again. She's not going to win as neither song is strong enough and this year the competition is even more fierce than last's, but it'd be great if she could score her 13th nomination.

Personally, I think I prefer "Somehow You Do", but I like "Never Gonna Tame You" too and I've only listened to it a couple of times; maybe it'll grow on me like it happened to me with "Somehow You Do". I agree that most likely she won't win this year either, but yes, it would be great if she could get at least a nomination.

Oscars’ Eligibility List for Original Song and Score Contains Few Surprises

Highlighting some notable parts of the article:
Eighty-four songs and 137 original scores have been deemed eligible for Academy Awards consideration this year, Variety has learned.

All of the songs that have been campaigned over the past two months appear to be on the list for consideration, including talked-about entries by Van Morrison (“Belfast”), Ariana Grande (“Don’t Look Now”), Kid Cudi and Jay-Z (“The Harder They Fall”), Beyonce (“King Richard”), Billie Eilish (“No Time to Die”), Rufus Wainwright (“Rebel Hearts”), Brian Wilson (“Brian Wilson: Long Promised Road”), Jennifer Hudson (“Respect”) and U2 (“Sing 2”).

Eleven of the 84 are from documentaries, an arena that continues to attract artists concerned about social and cultural issues. “Crime on the Bayou” has Raphael Saadiq,”The First Wave” Jon Batiste (last year’s Oscar winner for the “Soul” score), “The Mustangs: America’s Wild Horses” perennial favorite (and still Oscar-less) Diane Warren and “The Rescue” Aloe Blacc.

Emmy, Grammy and Tony winner Lin-Manuel Miranda may be seeking EGOT status with a possible Oscar win, as he has entered original songs from no fewer than three of this year’s films: “Dos Oruguitas” from “Encanto,” “Home All Summer” from “In the Heights” and “Keep the Beat” from “Vivo.” Miranda’s path to EGOT could also come via his directorial debut, “Tick, Tick … Boom!”

In most cases, producers enter one or, at most, two songs from the same film, but every year there are also multiple entries from less familiar titles. This year the list includes four from “Belle,” five from “Fix” and five from “Laws of the Universe: The Age of Elohim.”
The article also mentions that Germaine Franco's score for "Encanto" is eligible.
"There are two wolves and they are always fighting. One is darkness and despair. The other is light and hope. Which wolf wins? Whichever one you feed." - Casey Newton, Tomorrowland

^Thanks for posting. I'm glad the score for Encanto is eligible, though I doubt it'll be nominated at the Oscars. Actually, though I knew Tick, Tick … Boom! had chances at the awards, I hadn't realized Lin-Manuel Miranda could get his EGOT status winning in other categories apart from Best Song. I think his best shot this time is the song category, though. Tick, Tick … Boom! might get some nominations, but I doubt it'll make him win any Oscar. By the way, I've heard the Oscar Shortlists in some categories are announced next Tuesday. It'll be interesting to see which songs and scores make the cut.

It's a shame we're not getting the complete list with all the submitted songs like before. After the Academy stopped releasing it to the public, The Wrap kept the tradition going by publishing it, but for some reason they haven't done so this year. Based on Disney's FYC websites and the Variety article, here are the songs Disney is submitting this year. Oddly, Liam Payne's Sunshine from Ron's Gone Wrong was not submitted.

Best Original Song

"Believe" — The Rescue
"Breathe" — The First Wave
"Call Me Cruella" — Cruella
"Dos Oruguitas" — Encanto
"Fire in the Sky" — Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings
"Lead the Way" — Raya and the Last Dragon
"Measure of a Man (Cinematic)" — The King's Man

The Oscar shortlists are out. It's interesting Encanto's score was deemed eligible despite being from a musical. There's a lot of picking and choosing with scores from musicals lately. The rule that scores from musicals are ineligible as they are "diminished in impact by the predominant use of songs" is applied selectively and that's not fair. I'm a bit surprised "Call Me Cruella" didn't make the cut, especially since last year's "Loyal, Brave, True" from Mulan did. I'm glad a Diane Warren song made it through. I hope she gets nominated again this year.

Oh, I just remembered that the score is written by Germaine Franco. That may be the reason here, since the person who did the songs and the person who did the score are two different people.

I agree about "Call Me Cruella," I liked that song in a campy way. I can't believe WDAS didn't push "We Don't Talk About Bruno." That was undeniably the best song in Encanto. Why not even throw "Lead the Way" from Raya out there, for that matter?

Yeah, I though at least one more song from Disney would be selected. Finally, like in the animated short category, only one submitted work from Disney made it on to the list. In this case, "Dos Oruguitas" from Encanto, which is also the only song from the three Lin-Manuel Miranda had in contention to make the cut.

Me too. Her song is actually one of my favorites (if not my favorite) from the shortlist. By the way, if anyone wants to listen to all the songs and like me has problems finding the one from Belfast, here it is: https://focusfeaturesguilds2021.com/belfast/song

At the moment, the song I'm predicting to win the Oscar is "No Time to Die." Billie Eillish has been inescapable lately, including hosting "Saturday Night Live", and appears to be winning a lot of admirers. The last two James Bond movies also won for their theme songs, after several years of the franchise being ignored by the Academy in that category (before "Skyfall" won, "Live and Let Die", "Nobody Does It Betters" and "For Your Eyes Only" were the only James Bond songs to receive nominations).

Encanto’s ‘We Don’t Talk About Bruno’ Is Topping the Charts. So Why Didn’t Disney Submit It for Oscars?

I agree with the article's theory that Disney probably felt the more emotional song would have the best chance and didn't predict what a viral hit "We Don't Talk About Bruno" would become.

Would "We Don't Talk About Bruno" win, if submitted and nominated? It's possible, although I still think "No Time to Die" is the frontunner. I also think the chances of "Just Look Up" keep going up, especially if voters want to honour the song's message.

Disney made the same mistake with Frozen II by going all in on "Into the Unknown" when "Show Yourself" was the better of the two. I can sort of understand the mistake in that case, considering Idina Menzel's powerhouse vocal performance, but here.... The ones they submitted were "Waiting for a Miracle" and "Dos Oruguitas," right? "Waiting for a Miracle" isn't even as good as "How Far I'll Go" when you're comparing I Want songs, and that's before we get into the poor vocal. With "Dos Oruguitas," they were probably thinking it would tap into the Oscars pro-diversity attitude since it's all in Spanish (and the scene the song is attached to is very emotional and beautiful). It's just a shame they approach this in a cynical way rather that pushing the song that is the strongest.

They probably chose "Into the Unknown" over "Show Yourself" because of the spoilers in the latter. They didn't want to reveal who was the voice Elsa was hearing ahead of time. It was a stupid decision, nonetheless.

No, only "Dos Oruguitas" was submitted.

I think most people would agree with that assessment, myself included.

I think the decision-making process was much more cynical than that. They must have thought the song had the same ingredients as "Remember Me" from Coco and therefore it would garner the same reception and accolades.

Oh, that makes sense, but "Remember Me" was a much better song than "Dos Oruguitas"... I mean, it's memorable, whereas it's hard to remember right off how "Dos Oruguitas" goes unless it's playing. This is why I like the Lopezes, because I've enjoyed most everything they've done so far.

I suppose Miranda could've been the one who pushed for that himself, calculating that it could work for him if it worked with Coco, since he's after that Oscar. And I've always felt like there were things about Encanto that were imitating Coco; Mirabel's design still feels to me like they put Miguel in a dress, from the shape of the head to how short she is.

Both movies also quote "Seize the moment" a few times. Albeit Coco does it much more often than Encanto (only heard it 2x in Encanto), so it's not that obvious. :P

"No Time to Die" has won the Golden Globe for Best Original Song. Dune has won the Golden Globe for Best Original Score. This marks Hans Zimmer's fifteenth nomination and third win in the category after The Lion King and Gladiator.
