I'm not surprised Over the Moon was snubbed at the Grammy's, but I thought "Loyal, Brave, and True" might get a nom there.

Thanks for compiling all this info about the Disney songs competing this year, Sotiris! There are less songs than last year (partly due to the pandemic), and most of them don't look like strong contenders to me. The only one I think has a real chance of getting a nomination is "Free" from The One and Only Ivan, which was written by Diane Warren. Though, she's probably more likely to be nominated for "Seen", the song she wrote for the Italian film The Life Ahead. Personally, I hope the two songs are nominated, as I really like both of them. "Free" is also the only one so far we know Disney has started promoting for awards consideration:

Sotiris wrote:"All Eyes on Me" and "Rappin' Ced" are unlikely to be submitted for consideration.
"Rappin' Ced" is also the second song in the credits, so I think it's ineligible anyway.

The eligibility period for the Grammy's is different than the one for the Oscars, so maybe it wasn't eligible this year.

That makes sense. Diane Warren is an Oscar-nomination savant! She has been nominated 11 times already in this category, including for last year's "I'm Standing with You", despite it being written for a poorly-received faith-based film. She's a shoo-in, especially since the contenders this year aren't as strong as last's. I doubt she's going to be nominated twice though. "Seen" is my favorite of the two, so I hope, if she does get nominated, it's for that one. "Seen" has already won Best Original Song at Capri, Hollywood International Film Festival which is usually a good predictor for the Oscars.

I would say "Carried Me with You" has a good chance of getting nominated as well. Not only because it was nominated for a Grammy, but because the music branch of the Academy seems to have a Pixar bias. I also have a feeling Onward won't receive a nomination in the Animated Feature category, so they might nominate its song as a consolation prize. I liked "Carried Me with You", so I wouldn't have an issue if it indeed ended up getting nominated. Soul will undoubtedly get nominated too in the Score category.
D82 wrote:"Rappin' Ced" is also the second song in the credits, so I think it's ineligible anyway.
I haven't watched the move yet, but I read that the song in question was used in the body of the film too. If that's the case, being used as the second end credits song doesn't affect it's eligibility. I also thought it might be ineligible because of its short length, but I checked the Oscar rules and they don't have a minimum length set.
D82 wrote:The eligibility period for the Grammy's is different than the one for the Oscars, so maybe it wasn't eligible this year.
That's right. Over the Moon and Mulan will be eligible for next year's Grammys. I was surprised "No Time to Die" was nominated when the movie hasn't been released yet, but apparently because the song was released during the eligibility period, on February 13, it wasn't an issue.

Loyal, Brave and True was also released during the eligibility period.

Rappin' Ced was in the movie itself, but I don't think Disney thinks it has a chance.

Personally, I'm not sure which one I like most, but I think "Seen" is the better of the two, so if only one of them is nominated (which, as you said, is what's most likely) I agree it should be that one.

I hope you're wrong and Onward is nominated for Best Animated Feature. It's true that the fact that it was released such a long time ago could affect its chances, but I think it deserves at least the nomination. Personally, it's my favorite animated film of the year (of the ones I've seen so far), so I would be very disappointed if it wasn't nominated. However, I don't like "Carried Me with You" much. Probably, that's why I don't see it as a strong contender despite the Grammy nomination or it being from a Pixar movie.

Oh, OK. I must've missed the moment in the film where it appears.

You're right. I guess then it wasn't nominated because there were already a lot of acclaimed songs from the previous year that the Grammys felt they needed to acknowledge.

Someone on YouTube said it plays briefly in the Hall of Memories scene. It's supposed to be a song by Joe's hip-hop band when he was younger. They show a picture of the band with Joe on keys wearing a red tracksuit.

This is a year where none of the original Disney songs really stood out for me, with the exception of the songs from Candace Against the Universe, but that movie will probably be submitted for next year's Emmys rather than submitted for the Oscars.

The original song contenders I would most like to see nominated would be "Rocket to the Moon" and "Ultraluminary" from Over the Moon, "I Choose" from The Willoughbys and "Howls the Wolf" from Wolfwalkers (I actually thought "Running with the Wolves" was an original song when I watched Wolfwalkers, but then I discovered it wasn't).

They couldn't do that even if they wanted to. The Academy rules for this year state that a streaming movie is only eligible if it was originally planned for a theatrical release that was upended by the pandemic. Candace Against the Universe was always planned as a streaming movie for Disney+.

I think it's more that they didn't want to touch the controversy-ridden Mulan remake or reward Disney for kowtowing to an evil regime. While it's a shame Aguilera didn't get another nomination under her belt, she's already a legend in the music industry and will remain that way. So I'll look on the bright side and enjoy the fact that this is another kick in the teeth to Disney's idiotic decision-making wrt Mulan's remake.

If it's any consolation, this category only awards the songwriters, not the performers, and since she didn't contribute to its writing, she wouldn't have been nominated even if the song were.

I would like to see "Rocket to the Moon" or "Ultraluminary" nominated too. I think "Rocket to the Moon" has a serious shot at it, and judging by this ad it's probably also the only song from the film Netflix is submitting. I thought "Running with the Wolves" from Wolfwalkers was an original song too! I didn't know it was a pre-existing song by Aurora. It's curious that both that song and the one from The Willoughbys you mentioned are from artists that have worked for Disney recently; Aurora (Frozen II) and Alessia Cara (Moana), respectively.

By the way, I wanted to clarify that I do like "Carried Me with You". I think it's nice and has beautiful lyrics. I just don't consider it one of the best songs of the year. And I forgot to say that Diane Warren also has a third song in contention this year: "Without A Net" from a documentary about stunt women, though I don't think it's as likely to be nominated as the other two.

"Rocket to the Moon" is a safe bet. Every awards pundit I know has placed it in the top 5 of songs most likely to get nominated. Netflix is probably only submitting "Rocket to the Moon" to avoid splitting the vote. It's a strategy that Disney has also adopted for some projects. Personally, I'm not convinced it works and I think it's unwise to put all your eggs in one basket, especially since the music branch has proven to be fickle and unpredictable. You can never really know how they'll respond to a song, so why not submit all of your eligible ones and let them do the choosing?

That's also a good one! She's quite talented. I know she co-wrote the end credit song for Atlantis, but I'm surprised Disney hasn't hired her yet to work on an animated musical. If I had to rank them, I would place "Seen" first, then "Free", and "Without a Net" last.

Yeah, I understand why they use that strategy, but I agree that sometimes it can backfire on them. As you said, it could happen that the song submitted is not nominated and another song from the same film would've been if it had been submitted. Plus, they're limiting the Academy's choice. We'll never know what songs would've been nominated if they had been able to select from all the songs.
Sotiris wrote:That's also a good one! She's quite talented.
I like "Without a Net" too and I agree Diane Warren is a talented songwriter. I especially like her lyrics, but she can create good melodies too. Sometimes her songs don't stand out much to me the first time I hear them, but they usually grow on me later. I hope she finally gets an Oscar someday.
Sotiris wrote:I know she co-wrote the end credit song for Atlantis, but I'm surprised Disney hasn't hired her yet to work on an animated musical.
I don't know, perhaps she's not interested in it. Has she written any full musical? Maybe she has, but from what I've seen, she mostly composes individual songs for films. By the way, now that you've mentioned Atlantis, it just occurred to me that maybe she could collaborate with James Newton Howard again in Raya writing a song for the end credits. I think that would be great.

Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens (Anastasia, Once on This Island) are also vying for an Oscar this year with "How Can I Tell You?" from the documentary Nasrin.

Thanks for the links! There doesn't seem to be a clear favorite this year. Well, maybe "Speak Now" from One Night in Miami which tops several of those lists, though perhaps it's because it has just been released.

That's a beautiful and moving song. I wouldn't rule it out as a possible nominee.

By the way, the soundtrack for Ghibli's Earwig and the Witch is already available to listen and it includes two songs performed by Indonesian singer Sherina Munaf: "Don't Disturb Me" and "The World is In My Hands", but I don't know if they're original compositions or not or if they'll be eligible.
