The Disney Channel....Yeesh.

Greetings! Sorry if this is better suited somewhere else, but I'm new to this whole thing.
The capabilities of DVD have reawakened my interest in the Disney Studio, especially the Vault Disney and Treasures series. (Spent darn near 4 hours last night on disc 2 of "20,000 LUTS"!)
What's got me bugged now is that these DVDs are just like an appetizer or sampler plate...I really would like to see more of the Disneyland TV show, especially. But where else can you see this stuff? The Disney Channel has turned a cold shoulder on its greatest asset: the Disney vault! Whenever I check the program guide on my dish all I see is Lizzie this and Even that.
Am I, at age 31, a grumpy old man? About this I am! Mainly because I remember seeing some capital-I incredible stuff when the channel ran "Vault Disney" at night. Stuff like the 70's revival of "The Mickey Mouse Club"....the live grand opening of EPCOT with Danny Kaye and lil' Drew Barrymore...the 25th (20th) Musketeer reunion special...and, of course, "Disneyland" TV episodes of every variety.
Has Disney ever considered branching out a digital network that maybe would feed on this stuff? If there can be a VH1 Classic, a Boomerang and a Classic Sports network, there darn well oughta be a "Vault Disney" where we can see the shorts, features, tv shows and specials we crave!
End of rant.

I think you make a good point. I get tired of seeing all that crap to whenever I toon into the disney channel, and if it isn't that, it's reruns of sister sister and smart guy.
Hey welcome to the message Board!
I don't watch the D channel that much anymore, but when I do it is annoying. I don't care that much about Lizzie and Stevens, because they seem to be popular now or whatever, but enought with Sister sister, smartguy, and those other stupid rerun shows they are always clogging the air time with. Show something DISNEY.

Welcome to the board, and I sympathesize with your feelings.
Personally, though I kinda dig the idea of Even Stevens and Boy Meets World reruns at late-night as opposed to Zorro reruns. (Maybe because it's been over a year since I've seen either show.)
But it does seem foolish for them to get rid of classic content altogether. Heck, they're down to just one movie a day, too, it seems. I'd certainly prefer some of the classic live-action films that Hallmark (which I don't get) seems to run ALL the time.
I'll have a better opinion next month at this time, when my cable system begins to carry it among the regular cable again.
Still there are a number of shows that I could do without - Proud Family, and some of the others mentioned here. And they could always cut down the number of episodes of each show. Seems like the volume of programs is more polarizing of audiences than anything else.
Woohoo, we passed 3,000 total forum posts!

I definitely agree with what you're saying. Although I also miss the stuff that used to be on there when I was little. (Adventures in Wonderland, Under the Umbrella Tree, Torkelsons, Faerie Tale Theatre, Avonlea) So maybe Disney should make a Classic Disney Channel for people that watched the channel pre-Lizzie.

As I understand it, there's really no Vault Disney lineup anymore?
The Disney Channel's become MTV Jr.

I go waaaaay back to when the Disney Channel wasn't just really good but GREAT. I was a subscriber when it first started and wasn't even 24 hour. It went off air around midnight and came back on around 6am. They had Wonderful World of Disney late morning after Donald Duck Presents, Good Morning Mickey, Dumbo's Circus & few others. They showed uncut, commercial free programming including animated classics & live action Disney movies. Those were the great old days. You could watch all day and night the programming was so great. I don't think even though it's on the box that I've even looked at the Disney Channel since the (commercial filled) late night Vault Disney disappeared. What a waste. If you're not a preteen it's practically useless.

Bill, you brought up another good point - I don't get the whole bombardment of commercials. I could see some spots for programs, movies, and specials to run in between shows or movies, but is it really necessary for them to show the same things again and again. Most of them aren't even ads - stuff like "Disney kids express themselves."
Well, maybe they don't do this anymore, but when I had the channel they did, and it seemed rather stupid. If they're not going to have commercials, why interrupt with the same stuff over and over again.

Well, it's pretty well known in industry circles that Disney Channel will have to become a full-fledged ad-supported network within the next few years, and the constant commercials, while redundant now, are getting viewers prepared for the day when they show regular ads like every other network.
Btw, Disney Channel was the #1 network on cable last week, getting its highest ratings ever across the board, due in part to the premiere of The Even Stevens Movie, which got huge numbers.

Uh, hey guys... the Disney Channel DOES show regular ads like every other network. They haven't been a pay channel for years.

Ads for other Disney movies and programs or commercials for products and stuff? They're still a pay channel in some areas, but even so, I didn't think they ran real commercials, just promo spots for Disney stuff like what new episode is airing this week, etc.
Repeats!!!!!

I am a teenager so I grew up on the Disney Channel. One of my favorite shows of all time is The Torkelsons and they took that off a couple of years ago. Since then I have been searching the net for a copy of the series taped off t.v. When I turned 15, I started staying up late to watch the Vault Disney programming block. I especially loved Walt Disney Presents. I Like the shows they play, but it's gotten rediculous since they took off Vault Disney. After Playhouse Disney, they play stupid ex-saturday morning cartoons that are better suited for Toon Disney so I don't have to see them. They then play Even Stevens, Lizzie McGuir, Kim Possible, etc... And then they rerun those episodes! I DON'T WANT TO SEE THEM TWICE. the next time they play something that wasn't a rerun is at 1 in the morning. The run their older shows like So Weird, Jett Jackson, and a whole hour of the stupid Jersey. If they would dump the cartoons and play everything once, they could put back Vault Disney, and probably have room to re-air The Torkelsons, Avonlea, etc... Or I am in favor of a Vault Disney Channel (Like Nick At Nite). They could even play stuff like the Love Bug Television Series I read about from the 70's.

They show ads for other Disney Channel shows right now. In the not-so-distant future they'll be showing ads for other company's products, like every other basic cable network.
