Disney+ Picks Up 'Black Beauty' From Constantin Film
The streamer has picked up Black Beauty, an adaptation of the beloved children’s book from Constantin Film and JB Pictures.

Mackenzie Foy and Kate Winslet star in the already-completed feature that will premiere on Disney+ later this year.

The movie is a contemporary retelling of Anna Sewell’s 19th century novel and tells of the titular horse who is born free in the American West. As she is rounded up and taken away from her family, her story intertwines with that of a teenager, Jo Green, similarly grieving over the loss of her parents. The two develop a bond crafted in love, trust and healing.

I know that Disney will continue acquiring non-Disney properties, so while I'm a little bummed it wasn't an in-house project, this is definitely the type of film that I am excited to watch, so yay! Thanks for sharing!

I'm just now seeing this. It sounds like a lovely film. And I hadn't realized that Kate was actually voicing the horse. I wonder if it'll be "internal dialogue," or if the horse's mouth will move...?

Most likely internal. Having the horse's mouth move would look cheap and out of place. That's something usually reserved for kids movies. This one seems to have a more mature tone and aimed at an older demographic.

I sobbed through that whole trailer. I think this will be one of my favorite movies!!! It looks sooo good. (I wonder if Beauty just speaks to Mackenzie's character in dreams??)

Yes, the trailer was well-made. It made me wish Disney produced a naturalistic, horse-led animated movie in the vein of Bambi, The Lion King or Brother Bear. But since DreamWorks beat them to the punch with Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron that's probably never going to happen.

I was wondering that too. It's not clear how they're going to have Beauty talk. At least, we've ruled out the horse actually, physically talking. I'm glad it's not going to be that kind of movie. Aside from the possibility of Beauty talking to her in her dreams, maybe she just imagines what the horse would say to her in her thoughts in the form of an internal dialogue.

Maybe there is enough space in this world for Disney to also make a horse animated movie!! That could be it, too, the girl just imagining what Beauty would say.
