ABC is bringing back “The Wonderful World of Disney”

Post by Guitarman »

Apparently, ABC has decided to reactivate “The Wonderful World of Disney” banner to show some Disney (or should I say Disney-owned) movies starting this Wednesday.

I’m happy to see another network following CBS’s lead by bringing movies back to prime time on network television. However, I do find it a little disappointing that they seem to only be doing this for a few weeks. CBS announced they would show five movies on Sunday nights in May but have made no announcement about continuing with the movies after this month is over. Likewise, ABC has announced four movies to be shown over four Wednesdays in May and June but haven’t announced anything past that.

As I stated earlier, I think it’s great that the networks have started bring back theatrical movies to network TV, but I wish they’d make it more of a permanent decisions, instead of one that looks like it’s just being used to fill in some gaps in the schedule. And it’s be nice if, for TWWOD, they’d show some movies that were more vintage Disney (Snow White, Alice In Wonderland, 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea, etc.) instead of these fairly recent movies. I would also question whether they should show a Marvel movie under TWWOD banner.

I would have preferred older movies as well like the ones you mentioned. Not really interested in any of the ones they listed.

They did say they would air Thor: The Dark World so it looks like Marvel will be under the banner.

Yeah, I like the idea of them doing this, but I'm not exactly in the mood for any of these movies, either. It's also weird that they're airing on Wednesday, instead of the show's classic Sundays, but I think that's still American Idol time.

I'm surprised that Thor: The Dark World is the Marvel choice. I don't dislike it as much as most people, but it wouldn't be my first choice. They probably went with it because it's a bit shorter than most of the other Marvel movies. Maybe if this does well enough and sticks around, they'll pick a longer MCU or Star Wars flick.

Thor: The Dark World is probably the most unpopular film in the entire MCU (unless you count The Incredible Hulk) so I'm surprised by that too. Maybe they chose it because of how much Tom Hiddleston is in it and they know his fangirls love him, not to mention to prepare the audience for Natalie Portman's big role.

I'd be far more interested in watching Indiana Jones like the article said another channel was airing. I don't think Disney has the streaming rights for that though, even though they own Lucasfilm, since it's still on Netflix and not on Disney+.

I read that Paramount retains the rights to the first four Indiana Jones movies, even though Disney now owns the characters and can make any sequel they wish. Although I guess the possibility still exists for Disney to buy the rights back, but I don't think Paramount would be willing to part with such a popular series.

I'm not sure what the situation is with "The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles", but it's also likely Paramount/CBS has the rights to that show.

Thanks for explaining the Indiana Jones situation. I didn't realize Paramount had the rights in perpetuity. I know Fox had the rights for Star Wars: A New Hope until 2020 (although that became moot once Disney purchased Fox) whereas the other Star Wars films were freely available after the Disney buyout of Lucasfilm.

Here's an article that briefly explains how the Indiana Jones rights are worked out, if you want some more detail.
The Walt Disney Studios and Paramount Pictures have reached a distribution and marketing agreement for the Indiana Jones franchise.

Under the arrangement, Disney gains distribution and marketing rights to future films, in addition to retaining the ownership rights it secured when it acquired Lucasfilm.

Paramount will continue to be responsible for distribution of the first four films in the franchise and will receive a financial participation on any future films that are produced and released.

Thanks for that! From what I gleaned from that, it appears as though Paramount will handle the distribution of the first four films indefinitely. I'm surprised Disney is okay with that but I guess unlike Marvel or Star Wars, they don't have any big plans to franchise this especially with how many times the fifth film has been delayed.
