We have heard that Disney are considering the development of a ‘Diary of a Wimpy Kid’ live-action reboot series at Disney+ which would be produced by 20th Century Fox Television who are also working on the ‘Love, Simon’ series for Disney+. If the decision is made to go further ahead with the ‘Diary of a Wimpy Kid’ series then production will begin in 2020 for release on the Disney+ streaming service which already is set to boast an impressive catalogue of content.

The fourth movie "The Long Haul" did strike me as a potential pilot for a television series. Jeff Kinney has written several "Wimpy Kid" books with no signs of stopping, so a television series would have plenty of material to work from.

The next entry in the film series will be CG-animated.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid, which has spawned a successful live-action film franchise from the popular books, comes to Disney+ in 2021 as an all-new animated film.

^Thanks for the correction. The original report said it was a series, so I just assumed it remained that way. Isn't it it weird that in a film series one of the entries is animated? It seems kinda random. Is this film adapting a book that hasn't been made into a live-action film or is it a remake of one of the previous films? I wonder if any of the cast will come back to reprise their roles.

I remember a long time ago, after the third film was released, there were plans to make an animated tv special based on the sixth book "Cabin Fever." The official image released is set at winter time, just like "Cabin Fever", so maybe they're adapting that book.

More CG-animated adaptations of the book series are coming.

Disney+ added a new coming soon section today and on "Diary of a Wimpy Kid"'s page, it says the runtime is 57 minutes. So this is more of a television special rather than a movie.
